S37ST POAROEN. nt or Stock to Produoo 3 roatost Amount of Manure, rito maiiapcmpnt ofstock, like many cr llilngftt should more in a circle, clc requiros food, ami growing food tin Iiost advantage requires manure, en how ean stock bo managed to ■odiico tlio largest amount of ma nure ?—lids closes tlio circle. The making of manure, though but incidental to tlio profits or stock farm ing, is by no menus to ho lost sight of, mid Hint system which will produce tlio 'most mild liuttcr, cheese, boof or mutton, nnd nt tlio smno tlmo mnko tho most mnnuro must evidently bo the best one. It is poor economy lo neglect mak ing tlio most mnnuro out of what grows on tho farm—lolling it go to wnsto, and spending money to purclmso artifi cial fertilizers, which, in many instan ces tho money spent novor returns— Vegetable manures noser fail to fertil ize tho soil and add to tho oulargement of crops. Soiling stock—that Is, cutting tlio food in tho field nnd feuding It In tho stable or sholtorod pen, in troughs, Ims been tried, successfully triod a thou sand times, and thousands of our en terprising dairy farmers aro practicing it now with tho best results. This is not written for tlioir bonefit, for tlmy know its value; but for thoso who aro less Informed on tho subject and slow to lonvo nn old nnd will bonten path to enter upon a now track leading in a now direction with which they aro un acquainted. Detailed statements of tho result of experiments in this mnttcr havo been so frequently published that wo deem it unnecessary to copy any of them here. Tlioy all go to show that tho snmo amount of food—food grown on tho same area of ground will not only mnko moro milk, huttor, cheese or beef; but will mako moro and bolter manure; while nt tho snmo tlmo tho comfort of tho stock is greater, nnd its health equally good if not bolter. The extra labor, tho trouble, Is ob jected to—well, what of It T How do you got tho monoy that you Bpond for fertilizers f docs not that cost labor and troublo? Now supposo you save that monoy and take tlio troublo to mow tho grass nnd soil your slock; you have tho “ bird in hand ” which is said to bo “ worth two In tho bush." . All rubbish that grows in odd cor ners of tho farm should bo collected nnd carted Into tho cow-pon to bo tramp ed and mixed with tho droppings. Cart in swamp mud, or any kind of soil to absorb tho liquid nnd glvo a good sprinkling of plaster onco or twice a week. Sprinkle somo shelled corn over It nnd turn.in the hogs to work it over, but do not let them sleep there, it would crcnto mango on thogkin which should bo kept clean. Every argument in favor of soiling ealtlo will apply with equal forco to horses. Tho stables in cither caso should bo well ventilated nnd cleanod every day. Do not lie alarmed nt tho extra labor —you will soon got used to it, for you will have the extra labor of carting a largo quantity of manure to tho field nnS an extra quantity of hay nud grain to harvest the next season, and an ex tra sum of monoy to put In the hank —tills will give yon extra troublo too, to take care of it. Now, what do you say ? will you try It t—American Slock Journal. rudo box. In somo portions of New England potatoes arc stored in this way, oven by farmers who lmvo good collars.—Prairie Fanner. ■ Goon Seed.—Wo find in tho Iowa Ilomoslead n statement, by Situ) Fos ter, Esq., of tho production of two parts of the snmo field of wlient this season, both of which wero prepared nllke, nnd Irented in thoBamo manner, with tlio exception of the seed. On ono portion very cloun, plump, nlco wlient, costing $2.26 per bushel, was used; on tlio •other ordinary wheat worth (11.67 $1.80 per bushel was sown. The good seed averaged 23£ bushels per aero; tho poorer, 18} bushols por aero. A IltitT,—By enclosing tho north sido of your vegetable gnnlon with a eloso plank fenac, and'keeping It wall whitewashed, you nmy enjoy vageta- lilos much caller than without Buoli n fence, or snmo other artificial menus for accelerating their growth. Tlio oarliest varieties should be planted along such a fence, which will not on ly screen thorn from cold winds, but by Reflecting tlio sun’s rays upon them, hasten their growth. Buttons on Cattle’s Horns Fow aro awaro how much it improves tho appenranco of old or young cutllo to put hnndsomo buttons on their horns. They look much larger and finer overy way, nnd for fat cattle which tho farm er wishes to sell, thoy will cnhanco tho appearance of tho animal a hundred times tho cost. A Correspondent of tho Country Gcntloman suggests, as an elfeolivc method of Improving our stock, that a considerable tax bo lovlod on nil stallions, bulls, rams and hoars. lie thinks this would havo the effect of de creasing tho number ..of inferior or “scrub " animals of each class. A Correspondont of tlio Canada Farmer, residing at Hampton, Onta rio, had nn avorngo of forty-four bush ols per aero from nlno acres of Diehl wheat, and found this variety the most hardy, productive, and tho best quali ty of nlno varieties ho tested. A method has been discovered of separatlhg honey from tho eomb by centrifugal forco. Tho process leaves tho colls bo little Injured that tho sweet creatures which fill their, can go to work filling them again after a short season spent in repairs. Let tho truo and unmistakable de sire, spirit and Interest of the peoplo of tho South prevail in all our speech es and movements, and let these be as sumed as the true Indicia of the pur poses nnd designs of this section.— Circumstances novor so imperatively demanded the restoration of law, order and permanent peaco. The people aro ready to mnko enormous sacrifices to Becuro tlicso objects. It is only through them that our freedom, our fights, our irosperlty and tho maintenance of tho Constitution nnd the Union can bo as sured. Thoso who encournga any Idea of tho necessity or probability of a re sort to violence, are olthcr our enemies and calumniators, or they belong to a class of silly spouters nnd demagogues, who eko out tlioir scant rhetoric by inflammatory words and figures, which are received and laughed over ns the Pickwickian utterances of straightened and distressed deelaimors.—New Or leans Times. Tiie Geouoia Case.—Tho tnllc about special legislation for Georgia's enso has ah ended In smoke. Common-senso has profaHed over tho wild demands of carpet-bag fanaticism, nnd the fact is acknowledged oven by carpet-bag gers thomsolvos that Congress Ims no Jurisdiction over tho subject, inasmuch ns Georgia has boon ndmlttcdjbnok In to tho fold of tho Union. To adopt any other theory would be roverslvo of nil tho long-procinimod doctrines of lladlcnls.—New York Herald. TitEMiUTAnv Distbtots.—From es timates bnsod upon official dnto and eloso calculation of nil tho expenses, it is found that tho cost of tho five milita ry districts, or for reconstructing the Southern States under military doint- .nation, will not fall.short of tho state ment made by lion. .lames Brooks, for ty millions per amiurn. ITow it Pays.—A cnrpot-bnggor In tbo Louisiana Legislature thought to speculato in colton lands. lie was bit ten, his plantation turning out worth less; and so being Intensely loyal, pro cured the removal of tho parish sent to a fictitious town which ho locates right in the centra of his lands. Nothing pays like patriotism uftcr all. A highwayman, named Roberts, made four unarmed men “ stand aud deliver," on Mondny night, In tho vi cinity of St. Louis; but, while “ go ing through ” tho fourth man, wns grabbled nnd captured by tho other three, and taken to the city, whero he now ruminates in jail. A man in Connecticut, whoso name appeared by 'mistake ns ono of the Vico Presidents ah n Democratic meet ing, and who published nn indignant card stating that he “had not descend ed so low in tho scale of fallen human ity," wns arrested tho other night ns drunk and disorderly, and slept In the look-up. Btoring Potntoos. As the potato crop this season Is so nearly a failure ill the most parts of the country, extraordinary care should bo taken to preserve what few aro grown. To this end tho farmer should soo that ns fow hs possible aro injured in dig ging, and that they aro housed in tho beBt manner. Exporlouco has proved to overy po tato raiser, that tho practice of dig ging them In tho morning nnd leaving them on tho ground, exposed to the heat of tho sun during tho day, is a vory. Injurious one. Though potntoos nro provided with eyes, it is better if they novor see light. Potatoes that lmvo bccomo heated in the sun, aro ex ceedingly liable to rot; but oven if they escape this, their healthfulnoss nnd nutritive qualities nro greatly im paired. In somo sections of Ireland tho custom prevails of putting tho po tatoes into a covered tdp Immediately alter thoy aro dtg. , . Tho dryer tho atmosphere is, and tlio colder—providing It is not above tho freezing point—tho bottor it will bo for keeping potatoes. If placod in Buch nn atmosphere, thoy will show no tendency to sprout or rot for yoars; nor can they bo distinguished from freshly dug potatoes. All changes of temperature, or of tho degreo of mois ture, aro unfavorable to tho keeping of potatoes. A very good method of keeping them in small quantities, as for family use, is to assort them into barrels, fill tho interstices with suu-drled Band, and then cover the tops of tbo barrels with nicely fitted turfs. If kept in this manner, they aro not likely to bo- come ahrivlcd, and will retain tlio fresh ness of recently dug potatoes till late in tho season after they are dug. They will also show very little disposition to sprout. 1 f farmers aro not provided with suit able cellars for storing potatoes, thou thoy aro best preserved by making heaps of-them ou top of the ground, .and covering them over with straw nud oartb. If this method is adopted, caro should bo taken to cut a small drain round the heap, through which tbo sur plus water may pass off, and provide a means of veutilating the heap during the warm weather that often occurs in tlio West, oven during the winter.— For this purpose it is well to mako a tube of boards, about six inches square, which will reach from the bottom, or from near the bottom of the heap, and which shall extend a foot or two abovo tho outer surface. The part placed within the covering should be perforat ed with auger holes. Tlio top should also be closed by means of an end piece, through which Bliould be a two '' \hole, to bo closed at pleasure by us of a slide. arincrs who livo in tho vicinity of a sand bank, will probably find it will WALKER COUNTY. The spirit of the illustrated press of tho present day, as a general thing, is not only fur below the standard ol ap preciation, hut exceedingly disgusting. Especially docs this remark have ref erence to that most intensely disgust ing of all illustrated sheets, Harper’s Weekly, a so-called Journal of Civili zation. It is unworthy of tho pntrou- ago of our Southern people, uud its caricatures are such as must bo revolt ing to them. In a recent issue nn il lustration represented General Wade Hampton, of South Carolina—he who is boyqncl tho reproach of all but such debased beings us conduct such a sheet —at a negro ball, acting in tho capac ity of a boot-black to a big, greasy African. 'The cut n’so represents im prudent looking negroes promenading tho room with ladles upon their arms. Only a little below tho Ilnlcigh Stan dard can such a sheet bo, and in order to exclude it from our midst our people should discontinue to purchase a sin gle number. Nows-dcnlers aro not to dame for introducing it, for they must supply the demand.
