ND GARDEN. What is an Aoro Worth P Whoa tlio Southern farmer, bo ho a largo or small one, will rightly compute the value of nn acre, ami eot tho prop ur worth by It, wo may than oxpcot that Material and ronl wealth to tho Stato that is only now imaginative. Wo call ourselves an ngrloulturnl people, and admit that tho wealth of our Stato llos in its productions. To a greet extent, wo may say altogether, that as a poo- pie wo are dependent upon onr cotton, rlco and tobacco crops for wlmt mon- oy wo make; As to our corn crop, wo hardly feel like counting it in, ir wo judge from thousands of bushols that nro brought Wost to supply the de mands of ottr pooplo, and tho thousands upon thousands of dollars wo send out of tho State for that article nlono; not conniirig tho millious of pounds of 1m- euii that wo buy also from tho West. Uvory man that cultivates a fow acres of land, imaginos that lie must put half or two-thirds in cotton; that cotton is tho only thing that will bring rendy money. Wo would not have a word to say about planting cotton, if oaoii ncro planted brought a bag; but whon wo kuow that it takes from throo to four noros of onf worn lands to mako a bag, wo fool that It Is labor and inonoy thrown away, and that tho farmer 1ms never for a mornont sat down and cal culated tho worth of an acre well ma nured and well worked. An aero of land well manured, well taken care of, is worth from $50 to $100. An acre that will bring twonty- two bushels of wheat and thirty bush els of corn tho same year, is worth $100 per aero; and any pains-taking farmor can make an acre produce that. The manure dropped fn etnblos or yards by horses, eows, hogs, shoop, &c,, will manure one acre well. Wo speak of the small farmer, the man with but lit tle stock. Care and oconomy is all that is needed to save manure; hut so long ns wo drlvo along in our slip-shod way of making and saving manure, w« mny expect but poor roturns from tho soil. If tho small farmer could ho induced to tako halt' the pains the New England farmer docs on his place, there would not bo a farmer in Baldwin county that would not bo worth at least $20 to tho acre. But what w6 desire to call the espe cial attention of our farmers to, is tho Importance of manuring at least one ncro well and planting it in something thav will bring him $100 dear. It can bo done, on( j done easily, but there must bosysu.,, al)0Ht (t , Let the smell farmer who redo, tIlis ] 00 k at the nearest oily or town to -which lie trades, and boo what article of prodigious sells readily. Take for instance, dw; po tatoes, every body eats them, anatW find a ready sale; they keep well and • can ho sold by tho wagon load or hush- cl, at from fifty cents to $100. A farmer knows how many bushols nn acre will bring, and ho knows that ho can got $100 to an aero ovon at 60 cents per bushel. Tnko the ground pea; it will sell readily and briug a good price. Take onions, take Irish .potatoes, take pons. Put tho aoro in .niiylhing but cotton, and it will bring ntoro money than cotton would. Much manure is some times saved and was ted by trying to manure 10 to 20 acres, when in fact it should have been put on ono or five. Parmors got discouraged and Bay, it wont pay to savo manure,, because they havo tried it, and their crops wore a failuro; and failed because . they tried to do loo much with too lit- i tie, just as a foolisli house wife would nltcmpt to mako ono blanket cover throo beds.—Southern Recorder. Extracts from tho Dixio Farmor. With 50 sheep on 240 acres of land, n sensible farmer can raise moro corn, wheat, oats and grass,in ton year* tean lie could do. without them. Besides, lie will get annually tl>* profits of the wool, and tho inr~ase in lambs, which is, at least. M per cent. TIicbo are not faneiw’i out facts. A very clovor gentloman tolls us that ho will suhsoribo to tho Dixio Farmer, if wo will advise farmers, who nro getting source of fonco timber, to plant, on tho glndy places in their fields, Locust - thickets. The sugges tion is a good one, and wo very cheer fully publish it. Nothing pays heller than judlolgus ornnmont, it matters not to what it is nppliod. Just as it is so much easier to look honest and fool docent In a clean shirt, than in a dirty one, so it is easier for a farmor to live like a Chris tian, and raise civilized children in a homo surrounded with a handsome yard, carpeted with blue grass, and ornamented with roses, vines and ever greens. Ladies, what do you say f— Aro wo not right? A widow in her weeds may mako herself very attractive, but not so with tho farmer, Ids woods, like tho beggar’s rags, may begot pity, but novor can win admiration. Oood readers, if yon have not cleaned out tho weeds from your fields, roadsideB and fonco cor ners, wo beg you to loso no tlmo In doing so. If you cannot plough them up and turn them under, as green ma nure, mow them down, and rake them off, to fill up a wash, or burn them. Qood Cause for Tears. Ono of llio Radical candidates for tbc Legislature in Choctaw comity had a little hoy about fifteen years old who fell in lovo and engaged himself to one of tho neighboring girls. His father learning tho facts hunted the young man up, and finding him at his lady love’s house, gave him a good whipping and sent him homo. Tho little follow start ed on Ins way crying and met one of tho noiglibors, who inquired what was the matter. The little fellow replied that his father had whipped him be cause ho wanted to marry. “ Why, son,” said the neighbor, “I would not caro for that, plenty of limo in five years for you to marry.” “Yes hut I do,” replied tho little fellow, blubbering, “I have got a chance to marry a white gal now, and tho way- dad’s going on, I’ll have to marry a nigger.”—Oktibbeha (Miss.)
