IVlKm tlie laud ahouiids in the neoop-
ary anils, the manure sliuuld lie made ;
as Mr. U. nays. If thcro is vegetable I
manure without ft proper admixture of
calls', lli03o should he supplied, by pur
clmso, as practiced l>y Mr. D.j but if
tho land is deficient In both, ft proper
blending of the two will prove host.—
l’his may lie done by buying tho requi
site salts nnd puiliug them on the com
post heap, so ns to mix thorn wilh tlio
other ingredients, or by scattering
them on the ground in the spring, and
supplying lltu vegetable manure by a
green erop, to he grown during sum
mer, nnd turned under. Tito green
crops will ho greatly increased by pul
ling them on in spring. Green crops
should ho turned under while (lower
ing, nnd beforo seeding; besides, if
your green crop consists of weeds and
grass, you destroy them by preventing
their seeding.
In England, the tenant is required
1.6 fallow, ns they call It, one-third of
the land. This is done by plowing it
well in tho Bpring, which greatly in
creases the green crop, nnd turning it
under while in bloom, in the after part
of tho year. .
I have improved portions of my farm
by penning my cows on the poorer
(spots wliiuli lie well, amt plowing it
under every two or three weeks
When I get that spot as rich ns 1 de
sire, I move Hie pen. I am particular
to liavo every cow penned. During
the winter ] food them in tho pen. I
also fatten my hogs on my cultivable
lauds. Many, rather than carry them
water, make their lots on a branch,
where nil their droppings, and .the
cobs, which aru the best of manuro,
wash away. They plaou their Itorso*
lots in tho sntuo way. No thrifty far
mer will do that.
Deep and thorough tillage will, in n
great measure, compensate for want
of ditching and manuring uplands
Whore the land ia thoroughly and deep
ly plowed, the rain, instead of running
off nnd carrying the soil, will tiller
through it, leaving more or less rich
ness. During summer, tho roots of
vegetables will penetrate deep in search
of moisture, and on dying, will become , ,
manure, so that in process of lime, tho , »PP|tt f"f «*& .part «ml valuation
land will become rich-ns deep its it is "
plowed.
