had never seen him before, my eye lit

“Spoons.” He is strikingly like tlie
caricaturos of him that flood the coun
try. Butler has one of those physiog
nomies that’ defy distortion, and no
burlesque can twist out ef its own un
mistakable nnd ugly identity. With
his hold, receding forehead, his slop
ing eyes and mouth,-his vile leer and
bold look of malignity, and bis squat
ty, pot-bellied form aud consequential
strut, no one over' mistakes tho great
“Spoons.” He Is very able, very
ready, very daring, and immeasurably
ambitious.
James Brooks, of New York, is one
of the courtliest gentlemen and most
rcspeetablo. statesman in the body
His profile is very fine, bis manners
very winning and his voice musical
and swoet. Ho deserves much regard
from tlie South. 1 He has been a most
gallant and unswerving champion of
Southern rights And honor. .His bit
terest opponents respect him.
Schuyler Colfax, the Speaker and
Vice President elect, is a smiling,
good-natured looking little gentleman,
whose combined affability and garrul
ity have atoned for lieavier*brtiin cali
bre, and carried him where mind with
less tact would have failed to reach.
There are many more Representa
tives I should like to notice but have

tion in Congress, while I was there, to
