Xl|krevolution now going on in Coin,
although it will Hot produ*? no grent n
tllmlnutlon iivtho quantity of sugar and
syrup ns materially to efli-ot tho price,
yot tliers area class of men who grow
rich by their wits, and are known ns spec
ulators, who serai upon everything, and
magnify everything they stUe upon, to
create panic and Increase thu price after
they have bought largely of any article.—
A, month ago sugar went up ten cents a
ppnmi in the New York market; and why?
Subtly because bhrovrd speculators took
advantage or the little rebellion in Cuba,
thatrcally In comparison with ether rclxd-
llotiS would not amount to the importance
ofastreetfight, Butthoforegoingthoughts
aro penned for the purpose of showing the
farming community of tiro great safety to
cay nothing of making every tiling that
can bo made on our farms for homo con-
suTnptlon, and not depend on foreign mnr-
kots for nhy real necessity. As an article
of diet we consider syrup a real necessity,
andcspeciallynmoiig children. And right
hero wo will drop a medical hint to our
Mends who have children addicted to dirt
eating. Give them as much syrup or su
gar ns thoy wish and our word for il, you
will sec the pale fucc change to the healthy
hue, nucl that morbid appetite that calls
for something to satiate it, will give way
and health bo restored; and then as a mat
ter of coursu your child cured of Ids dirt
eating propensities, llind we do not say
that eating it throe times a day will effect
this, hut have it so that tho child mny have
free access to it at will.
Then as wo consider syrup as a ucccssa-
ry article of diet, and ns we cannot produce
iu this latitude the Culm cane from which
to make our syrup ami sugar, wo must
take sorghum a3 the best substitute. In
regard to tho seed of tho plant wo cannot
bo too particular. As sorghum has been
so indiscriminately planted in tills country
with broom corn and other millet, that the
quality of seed have deteriorated very ma
terially, and wo should ba careful to obtain
as pure seed ns possible. Like everything
eire we plant the ground should until or-
onghly broken and well pulverized with
tho harrow, as the young plant Is quite
small ana clods nre of great disadvantage
to it. The rows should bo laid off three
and a half feet apart, and if manure is
used should be put deep in tho drill, and
tho furrow filled with dirt to within one
inch or half iueh of tho surface, theiulrill
tile seed as thoroughly as possible to insure
a stand, when up three or four inches, thin
out one to a hill, eighteen inches apart.
Keep woods down carefully until tho plant
has gained some size, and then tho rapidi
ty of growth will kill out noxious plants.
Do not sucker the plants, for iu good land
our experience Is that they are a real profit
to tho plant, in keeping down those that
put out at the upper joints, and whichnre
of material detriment to tho plant. Tho
suckers at tho root, is tho natural growth
of tho plant, and yields os much more in
proportion ns there nre Btalks formed. No
ono thinks for an instant of pulling the
suckers from wheat, even were itpracllca-
* bio, and yet the same rule will apply to the
ono ns the other.
In cultivating the plant the same rules
that apply to cane maybe used for the
caue, and by that wo mean to impress this
idea, tlmt tho culture should be shallow,
just deep enough to kill out the grass and
weeds, and not deep enougli to kill out the
roots of (lie cane. Tho lime for plnntln:
should ho early in April, that it may have
ample time to mature all its joints. It
commences maturing at tho top joints and
matures downward—the Cuba or sugar
ciuicmatuVes from the lower joims upward.
Tho crop should never be cut*until per
fectly matured, ns it i3 a loss of lime and
of all previous labor, to cut befova the
sachariuc matter is fully formed. When
perfectly ripe cut, and if possible, stioek it
in tarns or under sheds in the shade afew
days before grinding If not convenient,
grind ns fast ns it is cut, for Hie rays of
tile sun lias a tendency to * * * *
and render it unfit for syhup Or sugar.
From nil article by Isaac A. Ilodges wc
take tho following: It has usually been
recommended to plant iu rows running
North and South, but from some consul
orations and facts occurring to me, I nil
inclined to prefer rows running from East
to West. Tho west wind storms nro the
most destructive, and a crop planted in
rows running in the direction of winds
will, of course, stand much better than one
Hie rows of which arc transverse to such
direction. 1 saw one this season where
tho matter was fairly tested. In tho por-
t ion planted North and South the crop was
laid prostrate; in Hint part on the contra
ry, wherein the rows ranged east and west,
the crop remains unmoved.
In a future article wo will speak of llic
manufacturing processes for making both
sugar and syrup from the cane.
A Main mau gives, Ills method of treat
ing baulky horses ns ibllows: ‘‘Let me in
form tho humane men and hostlers, qudjill
who hold tho rein, tlm'l Iho way to cure h
bnllty horse Is to take them from the car
riage nnd whirl them rapidly round till
they tiro giddy. It requires Hvo iscu (q

Improving Cnrilen Soil.
It must not lie forgotten, says the Farm
or’s Home Journal, tlmt every plant, how
ever small or feeble, takes some thing from
tho richness of the surrounding earth. In
order, therefore, to keep up the fertility of
tho garden without incurring annual ex
pense of fertilizers, it is well to have an
ont-of-thc-way corner where the withered
plants, refuse vegetables, tho litter from,
poultry houses, bones, ashes,sawdust, soot,
mowings of grass, dead leaves, and all
sucli tilings, may bo thrown. This com
post heap should bo under shelter; and if
caro bo taken to store up all refuse mate
rials there, the result will ho a good quan
tity of vegctablo manure—tlio best fertili
zer for (lower garden and orchard—in tho
following spring. Deforce it is used, have
some fresh lime, slaked with brine until it
falls to powder, sprinkled over the compost,
which should be turned over two or three
times, nnd it is then ready for use. mixed
witli double its quantity of earth.

The only instrument necessary is a meas
ure with feet and inch marks upon it.—
The girth is the circumference of the ani
mal just behind the shoulder blades. Tlio
length is the distance from the shoulder
blades. The superficial feet arc obtained
by multiplying the girth and length. The
following table contains tho rule to ascer
tain the weight of the animal:
If less than one foot in girth, multiply
superficial feet by eight.
If less than three and more than on?,
multiply superficial feet by eleven. 1
If less than five'and more than three,
multiply superficial feet by sixteen,
If less than seven and more than live,
multiply superficial feet by twenty-five.
If less than nlnc.nnd more than seven,
multiply superficial feet by thirty-three.
If less than eleven and more than nine,
multiply superficial feet by iorty-two.
Axample: Suppose the girth* of a bul
lock to be six feet three inches; length five
feet six inches; the superficial area will
then bo thirty-four, and in accordance
with preceding tahlo the weight will be
seven hundred and eighty-two pounds.
Example: Suppose a pig to measure in
girth two feet, and length one foot and
nine inphes. There would then be three
and a half feet, which, multiplied by elev
en, gives thirty-eight and a half pounds
as the weight of the animal when dressed.
In this way the weight of the four quar
ters can be substantially ascertained dur
ing life.
I.lberinn Cano Good.
This seed may bo purchased at the store
of Lowry A Eason, in this place. It is n
now and superior variety, does not blotv
down, and is much richer in sacherirte
matter than tho old kind iu nso here.
These seed are from canc that made over
two hundred gallons to tho acre. The
subscriber being convinced, from his ob
servation, that the cane in this country
has deteriorated since its introduc
tion, obtained seed last year from the
West, and finds tho Liberian to be a supe
rior variety. Those wishing to plant cane
this year would do well to supply them
selves early, as th& supply is limited.

to the value of the farm. A town ten
miles square contains sixty-four acres.
An increase of 8100, per acre is equal to
80,400,003, or enough to build two hundred
miles of railroad, even if it costs 812,000
per mile. But two hundred miles of road
would extend through twenty towns ten
miles square, and cost but ten dollars per
acre if taxed upon the land. These figures
are givon merely as an Must ration. If the
farmers had taxed thcmsel\ r es to build all
the railroads in this country, and given
them away to any companies that would
stock and run them, the present increased
value of their land would have Avell repaid
all the outlay.
As health is tho greatest blessing on
earth, so is disease the greatest curse, who
first wisli of the heart, therefore in a tem
poral view, should bo health. Nor. is this
all. As disease renders us unfit to perform
the various duties appropriate to our sta
tion in life, there is a moral obligation
resting upon us to preserve our physical
integrity, by using the means at hand for
repelling disease.
Now there is nothing so destructU’e to
health in females ns a continued suppres
sion of the mciwes. It is a condition which
makes a woman useless to herself and a
burden to her friends. Dr. J. Brndfield’s
