Improve his stock n»J try to make them | joseph E. veal, po of sovcrnl liter, From n Ini'BO .......» oeW in'the country, nudists ready ]ien, our Country friends mny expect to find n rick repast of useful Intoll- lieuco In ™els issue, tUM.ANEULN ADVEIITIUHMENTS. AjrlcnUnrii, Mternlnro, nl an& Member) of Jbrmcrt’ Amines’ Club: An Intelligent and carcftil reader In any of the deim tmonts of literature, will Hjid miioli In print which will not bear the scru tiny of rcRson, nor tlie test of experience, Particularly at tho present lime,, when so many arc trying to Jfvo by their wits In stead of their muscles, do wc find Idle spec ulations and false theories, sounding upon tho popular ear through tho medium of tlio press? This will, perhaps, to somo extent, explain the suspicion and opposi tion with which now. Ideas aro generally cohibaltcd by practical men. And when wo reflect upon the Improvement of tho recent past, and consider thc-bustle of pro gress in our own cventftil day, it becomes important to know as well what to bulievo ns what to do. This is an ago In which men lu all de partments of business and industry, need to think and observe, ns well ns to work. And it Is only when genius is combln- ciF’vvIlli and aided*by energy that wo can hope to analyze and put to the test the ninnborless theories and new' idedV of lh« present day. Truo science does not seek to cripple industry, but to give it such intelligent direction ns will afford the largest results and nt tho same time furnish such recreation to the mind nsciyblgivo interest and rest to our physi cal- phrtuits. There Is no labor so barren of rcsidis, nor so fui iguing to the body as thiit which is done mechanically, without any sensibly reason to tho mind of tho ln- 1 rater why it is done at all, or in that par ticular i.nv. This is especially truo in all tbo avocations of husbandry. If wo tire, onrsclvesntnlour teams by ploughing deep, itis souis relief to understand tho renson why \ye do ll, and to know we will bero- wayded' by certain desirable results. If wc xpcnil our strength or our means In ditching and draining our low unproduc tive lands, it is some satisfaction to know the philosophical reasons why such-labor is necessary, and that It will surely be fol lowed by hill compensation. Likewise if wo compost or purchase manures, it is im portant as well ns plnsjpt to know what is deficient in our soil to produce the particu lar crop dt-slred, and the most economical plan of procuring It. There Is certainly iLsucncaJu Agriculture, and tluiugh yet id-its infancy, It lias developed and estab lished many general principles, which en terprising fanners all over the luud, are adopting, with manifest advantage to their own fortunes, as well ns to tho general prosperity of the country. And one of tbo needs of tbo present day, is the Infu sion of more Intelligence In the application of labor, and the expense of enlarging tlio productiveness of our farms—wo want all oni- fanners to do ns well as a few lending men here and there all over our country Ufedolng. IVhat would he the effect upon thu.genernl prosperity of tho cotton belt of the South, iveroall the planters in that Section, farming as successfully ns Mr. IJitvid Dickson of Hancock county? For th cniydiye years lie lias made agriculture hfasfndy, rftd except lusnmll experiments, testing tho theories of others, or of Im- prhWihente suggested to his own mind, he proceeds intelligently, with a renson for all he docs—and cotton planters all over tho kind, nro aroused into new activity and liopc bytiw exl mot d Imivy resuKsusreptirt- • ed in Agricultural journals by himself, and also by visitors who travel long dis tances I n satisfy 1 heniselvos and learn some thing of the details of his system. Bo it is in stock raising!<lhw culturo of grain and grasses, the propagation and improve ment of fruits, mid indeed in all that per tains directly or indirectly to tlio farm.— Success is always tho very best test of the ory, and therefore the experience of successful farmers will give intelligent di rection to the efforts of those who have not had.qpportuuity or capacity to learn for themselves. To succeed in any thing, It is necossaTy’llret to find out nil within rencli ill-regard to It, and information is to bo accepted, whether, received by nil applica tion of principles already established, or ns it result, developed in our own experi- oueo or that of others. Life is too short to find out all we ought to know by aeei- - (lent ill this fast age. Availing ourselves of the genius of others, and truth already ,"established, Vo should appropriate their ,. experience, nnd beginning where they loft ofl', andeavor by tlio patience of Industry , and judicious management to go a step be yond our fathers In the noble pursuits of Agriculture. But besides intelligence and close obsor- -vatinn, there isalsaueed of capital invest ed in farming. It is n singular mistake with most men to lake every thing they can get from their farms and return noth ing—lio expenditures or improvements made beyond what is actually necessary - fd continue tiie same old system from year to year. In.merchandise or manufactur ing, men endeavor to build up a business, liy iniproving their fixtures and adding to their stock. Not so in farming. Land Unit is considered goad is expected to take cure of itself— that it should be ploughed and yield annual crops, simply bccauso seed have been plauted and cultivated.— . The implements used nro generally cheap •-ond indifferent, and tlie feivost number needed to get along nt all. To make farm ing pay, money must he invested In it ns in other pursuits. The price of a plow or fine stock, or a bushel of clover seed should not "prevent" tho piu-ehnse", "provided the money can he raised to pay for them.— Aiul if a few dollars or hundreds are made they should be reinvested as the merchant does his earnings, in somo improvement otaddifloh-to the farm. Many mistakes are made every day from want of Informa tion ox experience in these practical pur suits, and therefore it becomes a subject of the highest importance to ourgoneral pros perity, to arouse thought nnd action, to infuse a spirit of enquiry and anxiety, to know more, of what is so slightly under stood. ' Farmers should kuow what other j farmers outside tflcir own community arc 8 doing. .Mr. Dickson reports three bales .cotton to the aero, aiul though such a IK result bus formerly been oonsid'ered tliriblc the capacity of the best land, yot many will follow his directions this year and try to makctieniut-h, Chester pigs -are report- -ukltiadinVIng been made to weigh 600 to 800 pounds at fourteen months.-and nt n con- approximate tho Chesters. In conclusion wo would also direct the attention of our members to our own local paper, several columns of which lire given up to the discussion of these practical sub jects in ovory member. It is an irreversible law of nature tliat “like produces like,” and he who sows or plithts poor seed, may says tho GormantOTvn-!lWff/rdj)7i,'-be"ccr- tuin that ho will reap a poor , harvest. If we breed from poor animals—horses, sheep or swlno—wo shall certaiuly hot improve our stock, hat tho reverse. And the same is truo of grains nnd vegetables. This fact appears now to be univofsaHjjrccogftizcd, but it 1b not strictly observed in practice ns it should be. Indeed, by many It is neglected to their own detriment.
