New Hampshire, for theft of clothing and jewelry. She is in jail awaiting a trial.— The daughter of a banker in Chicago and the niece of a grain dealer in St. Louis have lately been accused of stealing while shopping, but the matter was hushed up, iid they were not brought to trial. Two ,. eeks a^o a woman moving in the wealth ier circles of creole society, if we may be* lieve the New Orleans newspapers, was detected in like deccadilloes. Late San Francisco journals contain a similar sto ry. The daughter of a wealthy merchant in this city is serving a second term in State Prison for larceny. On tho heels of these oflences, wa have the arrest in this city of Miss Kate Fisher, a well known actress, on the charge of stealing a gold watch. The truth of the charge is yet to be proved. Kcvcro Hull Storm In West Virginia. A severe hail storm is reported to have passed over Wheeling, West Virginia, on tho 28th, doing immense damage. For full twenty miuutes hail stones as large as eggs, and somo even larger than men’s lists, fell like rain. Water rushed down the streets with irrcsistahlc fury, carrying away boxes, barrels, and hales with tho current. Market and Main streets were Hooded to the depth of a foot, and, tho sewers being obstructed by ice, the water flowed into cellars of warehouses, doing much damage. Main street, from Monroe to Quincy, is covered with hail stones to tho depth of two feet. All the cast and south windows from the suspension bridge to tho creek were broken. The vineyards on tho islands and hills surrounding the city arc greatly injured, and fruit and shade trees arc torn up by the roots or complete ly stripped of foliage. The iron roof of tho Baltimore and Ohio jJpjjot was blown off. Many accidents arc reported, hut no lives wore lost. Terrible Trogcdy A terrible ttfngedy was onactcd in Daw son county, on Saturday, the 22d, the par ticulars of which are furnished us by a cor respondent. Jack and William Thom son were twin brothers, and lived togeth er. The former had a family, and was an intemperate fellow. The other was single, and wns a sober, industrious man and r good citizen. On the day above named. Jack wanted his garden hoc and was in formed that one of tlio negroes had carried it to the field. He immediately took down his double-baneled shotgun, and swear ing lie would kill tlio negro, mounted his mule and started to the field to carry out his threat. His brother William, know ing what kind of man ho wns, endeavored to get to tlio negro first; hut ho was out stripped hy Jack, who got there and fired iho negro before William came up, but nil * * JJ N.
