A frightful railroad disaster occurred
on tho night express train, on tho Erie
Hoad, on tlio lOtli inst., by coming in col
lision with a frolght train. The engine,
tender, baggngo car, express car, smoking

were thrown from' tlio track and smashed
out of all shape, Six cars wero burned

word burned to death. Among the de
tails of the accident, glvon by a correspon

nate train, is the following:
“In one of the burningcars, wedged in
his scat, by tho huttp of broken timbers,
sat the Rev. Mr, Halleck, of New York
City, perfectly unhurt, but unablo to ex
tricate himself from the wreck. In calm

told us to get an axe to try to cut nn open
ing in the sido of tlio car. IVo searched
around and obtained one from a liouso by

Judge presiding at said court, to bo executed
by hanging by tlie neck until ’dead, on the Otli
day of J uly, A D, 1869; and
Whereas, It further appears, that the evi
dence adduced upon said trialVs aforesaid was
not or a ojuintoter to demonstrate tho fact, tlmt
tho condemned lmd any premeditated inton-,
tion to take tlm UTo of the deceased, hut rather
tliitt tlio homicide was the fosttlt of a sudden
impulse of passion on tlm part of the condemn-
od, whilo engaged In conversation with the de
ceased, and tlmt, therefore, had tlio verdict of
tiiejury been strictly in accordance with the
cvldohco elicited heforo them, tho conviction
would have been for manslaughter only; and
Whereas, It further appeurs from said testi
mony that the deceased lmd on several occa
sions announced a firm determination to take
