well and truly deserved. But ho docs

of labor, nnd that a business once consid
ered speculative and hazardous. 1ms now

coming wuon they will disoovor and ap
preciate that 110 great brancli of industry
can bo relied upon with greater certainty
than this, from no othef is tlioro a more
amnio, and at llio same time more fixed
and unfluctuating return. Tlio product
of tbo mlno always meets with a ready aud
remunerative market, hover unduly accu
mulates, Is never affected by tho sonsons,
and rarely, or novor by accidental circum
stances. The coal-bed or the lodo fails loss
frequently than tbo crops; an inundation
docs not occurso frequently as a shipwreck,
II10 storm that spoils tho irierclmut sweeps’
liferijsss® over the minor. Ho Is, In fact,
more freo from danger, of losing bis capi
tal than any other adventurer whatsoever,
Tho capitalist who Invests iu mines tlmt
are managed In a legitimate,, sklllfol and
intelligent manner, need have no lonr, un
der such olrcumstmicos mining has but
few dangers, and affords as many guaran
tees for success ns any other nqtivo busi
ness, nml should moot with universal rec
ognition, not only as a valunblo auxiliary
to otlior Industries, but as vitally necessary
to the general prosperity of the country. But
llio capitalist 8liould.be cnrofullo invest
only ln thoso enterprises wliloli arc con
ducted iu a legitimate, sklllfol and intclll-
ni manner. Tho result of operations
..fug ignorantly nnd badly carried for
ward, by Inefficient, though probably hon
est men, invariably is, that enterprise is
wrecked, and additional distrust created.
Tho groat truth should ovov I10 carefully
remembered that theory, without practi
cal knowledge, is good for nothing, nnd
always worse than practical knowledge
without theory. Much mistrust has over
been created by mining operations, (of a
sort), having been entrusted to, and car
ried on by persons who, in all probability
never saw a mine, and who know nothing
of tbo first principles of mining, which is
as much a business as printing, or nnvi-
S ntloti. If a company of capitalists un-
ortook te conduct the work of a printing
establishment, would they riot appoint a
practical printer ns their superintendent?
Tlioy would laugh at the suggestion of ap
pointing a linvyo'r, or a doctor, or a mer
chant, to such a position. So with the
sliip-o7.'nci*, wlio would bo asked to ap
point- r, landsman as captain of IiIb vessel,
would not iu such' a ease, tbo printing
movements wouiu no deprecated, as they
should lie, ns destructive to publlo, conll-
^ injurious to general welfare, and as
g tq Invnluo iiousst ontorprlsos in
undeserved disrepute.
A,few words, nnd I Will concludo, to
tboso who think they liayo mines to soil.
Tlioy cannot loam too soon, or ioo woll,
that finding n specimen of sulpliui'ot of
coppor, or any other oro of coppor, does
not prove tlio oxlstonco of a valuable mine:
bodnusoclay iron-stono, or nnyoxfdoof
iron, Is found, 011 a hlllsido, or ofsowbere, ■
it docs not necessarily follow that beds of
Iron exist beneath which will pay for work
ing, nnd that a coal-bed may often lie
found, of tolerable thickness and good
quality, yet perfectly worthless, if tbo roof
or cover rock, is or such a nature that all
tbo profits of tlio tnliicLwill bo absorbed In
supporting it. Mlno owners, or those wlio
think they are mlno owners, will find that
capitalists, grown wleo from experience,
dosire toknow, “How much the mine will
avorago, by working test, in quality?—
llow much it costs, or will cost, to got the
material out of the ground? What aver
age quality enn bo taken out daily? IIow
