The store-house of L. IV. liarrelt, was
fobbed last Wednesday night. It is sup
posed that the thief, sometime during the
day, managed to conceal himself in the
uellrtf, Which is very unfYcflpontly visited.
Tho robber undoubtedly thought ho would
make n haul, as Mr. Bnrrott, who is City
Tax Collector, had in the store a day of
two previous some two or three hundred
dollars 4 , hut which, fortunately, l\a had
turned oVor to the council tho evening pro
vious. As it was, the loss was trilling.—
.ttoiuo seven or eight dollars being all that
was missed. In addition to this, a small
trunk, In which Mr. Barrett kepi his pri
vate papers, Was taken. This, however,
together with tho papers, was found by an
old negro wolnah dear the Novelty Works.
The bottom had been knocked in and the
papers wero loft scattered about among
tho brush and briars ucar tlio road-side.
It appears that thci'o Is an organised band
of thieves lurking ill Ibis community, as
this is the third store that has been broken
oi)on in Hie last month.
Wo think measures should lie inaugura
ted to bring them to justice. Wo don’t
know whether there Is ft night-watch or
not; hut if not, our town council should

Dreadful IIlot Near l'atona—Tlirco Xc
erocn ami a White .Man Unite.
From ptiliongers, on llio 1 o’clock Selma
train, wo loam tlio following particulars
concerning n riot Hint occurred near l’ato
pa, Ala., a day or twongo:
At a negro school examination, a white
hoy mid a young XVth Amendment got
Into a tight. Tho Anglo-Saxon was get
ting tho host of it, whciva negro man in
terfered and terribly whipped the white
boy. Tilts aroused tho indignation of
somo while men present, ivlio went for tlio
negro. Whereupon n general row ensued,
tho negroes using tire-arms.
But tlio matter did not end here. At
Crew l’lalns, a placo about a mile from
l’utona, tho negroes assembled dud fired
on women and children whilst on their
wily from church. This, wo understand,
took placo on Sunday. Tho sliorill' nud
othor officers went in quest of tho negroes,
whom thoy found hut met with l eslBtcnce.
Fivo negroes, with one white man, a Can
adian ntid negro-school lonelier, were cap
tured. At tho time these wore captured,
tlirco upgroos wero killed by the officers,
whilst in.ill:charge of tholr duty. Tlio
prisoners were carried to Fatona and con-
tlncd. Tuesday night,‘somo four or live
hundred men armed and disguised went
to tlio place of coiiliiicmeul and took llicre-
frbm tlio negroes and whito man. Tho
Canadian nud Uirco negroes were hung.
AVo did not learn what .tho 'Hnohors did
with the Othor two licgtoes.
AVo team Unit every train is halted at
1’iitona mid 'search made for those negroes
who escaped at tlio time tlio others were
captured.
AVo licnrd mnny exaggerated accounts
of tho afl'atr; but we havo given' those
facts only which wo dcoinoil reliable. AVo
await with anxiety, frirthor particulars.
