Joule acid gases, ami wero rapidly cover
ed by tho showers of lino-dust following
tho eruption, Which, gradually hardening,
formed perfect moulds of tlio unhappy
beings whoso uilsorahly perished, from
which adinlmblo casts aro taken, show
ing their forms, foatures, expression, and
attitude, when overtaken by dentil. At
the beginning of Ike excavation littlo at
tention was paid to tlrcso natural moulds,
only a few having been partially cast nnd
preserved, the most roinarkaklo of which
woro those of a husband, wife, and child;
tho husband atthomomentof death pres
sing tightly to Ids breast nineteen pieces
of gold aud ninety-one pieces of Bllvcr,
winch wero found fixed to his ribs; tho
wlfo lmd let fall n coarse ltnou cover, In
which woro found fourteen bracelets, gold
rings, enr-rings, and jowols of less Impor
tance. .
It was only, howovor la 1808, that M.
Ijforclll lmd tho happy Idea of Ailing thoso
natural moulds with a peculiar solution
of piaster, by which process tho victims
aro reproduced in their Integrity.
Tho tlrst group reproduced was compo
sed of a man, a woman, and two young
girls, who remained wlthin-doors until
mo late; when they attempted to escapo
by tho windows or tcrrnco, tlroy wero sud
denly asphyxiated, and covered by tho
dust, which faithfully preserved tho com
tour of thotr forms.
In 1808, a body thus reproduced was
that of a man who had fallen faco down
ward, whoso countonanco was tho vory
iinagoof despair and suffering—his clinch
ed teeth and crisped linnds eloquently ex
pressing the agony lie lmd endured.
Next in interest Is tho form of a woman
who had fallen on her back, whoso right
lmnd leans upon tho cnrtli, her left, rais
ed as If trying to ward oil’danger. Jlor
form Is tall aud elegant, her admirnhly-
arclicd foot, encased in strong sandals,
being a favorite subject of study to nrttst.
Ou ono of her lingers is a silver ring,
wliilo near wero found gold car-rings, a
silver mirror, nnd nn timber stnluo repre
senting Cupid. Ilcr lmir in the front
forms three rows of ringlets, and fulls,
United, over herbnek, in tho manner of
,ho Voltaire perruques.
A rcmnrkablo group of three persons
has been admirably cast which is in tho
highest degreo interest. A man of stat
ure and powerful build, with strongly-
marked features, prominent cheekbones,
iicaVy beard, nnd moustache, Is tho priu-
pal figure; ho hold in his linnds tho ear
rings of the two young girls who followed
linn, and tho koy of his liouso, and looks
tlic beau ideal or nn old Homan legiona
ry. Over his head ho had tho corner of
his ninnllo for protection ngalnst tho nox
ious gases or tho fulling dust and cinders,
the expression on his faco and that of his
two daughters being suggestivo of suite
cation.
There is something touching in the
spectacle of the two sisters who followed
their falhcr, in the precise attitude ns
they fell; supporting each other, breath
ing tho same poison, and dying entwined
tn each other’s arms. Both of tho fig
ures aro of beautiful forms nnd propor
tions.
Thoro is something Inexpressibly sad in
ho aspect of this group, moulded by Na
ture in tho agony between.life nnd death,
as they vainly attempted to escapo from
tile doomed city.
With tho means now at tlio disposal of
M. FiorWji, lie will ho able to form n mu
seum representing tho .race, beauty, 'cos
tume, nnd unhappy fato of the inhabit
ants of Pdinpcli, which will henceforth ho
of inestimable value to students of art nnd
history.

Under this net tlio State of Georgia will
'elect Hoprosonlativos this fall for tlio pres

commences next March. Tlio State is
plentifully supplied with Senators elect.—
The present Legislature elected tw
ago, Messrs. Hill nnd Millor. Lni
ter it elected two other Sonntors, nnd n
third one to fill n siiort term, treating its
own previous action as a nullity. When
Congress meets in December there will bo

Tlio act of Congress directs that tlio
