Tlio Houso Commltteo on Claims
kavo prepared a bill, which will bo re.
ported on Saturday, paying the awards

Supposed (o be In a Trance.
The body of a young lady hns been
placed in the receiving vault of the In
dianapoiis cemetery for dnily inspec
tiou, as the doctors are by no means
certain of her death. The Indications
of n trance are tlio freshness of tlio
countenance and the pliability of the
joints.
A Maniac Senator.
Frivato dispatches hnvo been receiv
ed at Washington stating that Senator
Pomeroy is a raving mnninc, and that
his life is despaired of. That bribory
business with tlio valiant Colonel York,
of negro regiment notoriety, is enough
to shake a man’s renson—more espe
cially so when the bribo money is “out
of pocket” and no election followed.
Lived In Poverty so that She Might bo
Bnrlcd In Style.
A lonely widow, over 80 years old,
who had lived apparently In the most
abject poverty in Newport, Delaware,
died a few days ago, and investigation
showed Hint she owned n house in Bul-
• timore and lind $1,100 hid away in
rags, cto. She left a will providing
for n funeral that will oost at least
$500, and saying that she .was deter
mined to be buried in style.
Carious Legislation.
Both Houses of the Legislature of
Virginia have now passed a bill wliioh
exempts an uncle’s widow and a neph
ew’s widow from tlio provision of law
which hns heretofore existed prohibit
ing tnnrrlago “between certain degrees
of relationship.” Tills nction was in
tended especially to meet the case of a
highly rcspoctnblc goutlemnn and lady
of Prince Edward, who were mnrriod
out or tho State of Virginia, and who,
under the old law, could not live to
gether ns-mnn and wife. A mail may
now marry his uncle’s widow or Ids
nephew’s widow in that Stato.
A Bride Murdered.
. A most heartless and shocking out*
rage occurred in the -neighborhood of
Mountain Cave, West Virginia, one
night last weak. A marriage was cel
ebrated at'tlio houso of Mr. Neal, and
after the wedding party had left for
i their homes, a party of rulllniisnpponrcd
outside with guns, horns and tin-pans,
making tho most discordant sounds,
with occasional discharges of their fire
arms. The bride, thinking their inten
tion might bo more hostile than compli
mentary, wont to the door for the pur
pose of inviting them to take some re
freshments, when a volley from four
guns wns fired at her, the shot from
one of which entered her ear causing
her death soon after.

Tlio incidents of suffering and

In Minnesota alone upward of 800
beings perished In the snow, whllo In
other sections of tho AVcstorn country
nil unusual number met tlio same fate.
Tlio Into terrible snow-storm which
broko over these countries wns awful
in its destructive power, mid dozens of
onforlunato men, who had left their
homes fortlie nearest settlements with
tlio view of obtaining such necessaries
of lifo ns they needed, were overtaken
by It and found (some of them hardly
100 yards from their homes) frozen,
stiff and stark, with their horses and
oxen frozen with them ; while in hum.
lilc cabin hofnoB, whole families of
children have been discovered frozen
to death beside their mothors, and out
on the blcnlt^prnirlo lay tlio still forms
of tliclr fathers.
Somo idea can bo formed of the im
mensity and terriblcness of such a
storm, when wo reflect that tiie snow
drifts in somo plaocs were 3,000 feet
long and from 15 to 60 feet deep;
cabins, rnilroad trains and telegraph
wires being completely enshrouded and
buried in this vast, white dcatk-dra-

Is flic Devil Dead!
AVe publish on the first page of to-
day’s paper nn article with the above
caption. If reported correctly by tho
Patterson paper, Parson Day’s theolo
gy Is a very plensant one in Borne res
pects, and' will prove vory ncccptablo
to somo of “Old Nick’s" subjects, of
whom the world is unfortunately quite
full just now; but before embracing
his absurb doctrines, wo think it would
bo better for them to first satisfy their
mindB thoroughly ns to whether ho
has nny "Bible evidence for asserting
that the wicked nrc to bo punished un
til they are purified and then enter
lienvcn, and that tlio -great enemy of
souls (tlio devil) is to bo finally and
forever destroyed. The preaching of
such an absurd {loctrino as that said to
have been advanced by Dominlo Dny;
has a tendency to mnko tho world
worse instead of better, nnd our only
reason for publishing the article is to
show tho contemptiblo Infidelity or in
sanity of somo Northern pronohers.—
\Vo do not wonder that Radicalism,

signations, elopements, adultery, theft
in high places of trust, nnd all otlior

Bleeding Kama?.
Tlio Senatorial agony is over m Kan
sas, linving resulted in tlio defeat of
Pomeroy nnd tlio election of John J.
Ingalls. Immediately after tho elec
tion Mr. Pomeroy was arrested for
bribery, prediontoil upon the statement
of a member of the Legislature named
York that tho former had offered him
eight thousand dollars for his vote—
two thousand of which ho received in
hand. This fellow A'ork is a native of
the State of New York and wns colo
nel of a negro regiment in tlio late

him to be a black hearted rascal; but
then nothing better could bo expootod
of a man who would lord it over a ne
gro negiment for the purpose of killing
off his own raoc.
A -Woman's Version of Unmanly lVork.
Under the beading of “an appeal to
clerks to vacate their places for girls,”
tlio Memphis Appeal publishes tlio fol
lowing communication. It mny be
rather hard on “tlio boys,” but tlio ar
ticle is written by a woman; they will
therefore feel bound to give it a respect
ful perusal, and coincide or not, ns
they feel inclined, with the spirited little
lady’s viows:
Editors Appeal:—AVImt is unmanly
work ? It is work unbecoming a mnn.
Dry goods clerk work is not mnnly
work; it is too efl'eniinato. A dry
goods clerk ought to ho a female, not
a male. Tho proper person to sell a
lady a skirt, chemise.or any undergar

it not ridiculous that when a mother
desires to buy a diaper for her child
she must bo waited upon by n olerk

stead of ono of her own sexf When
a son proves worthless lie is at once
sent to a dry goods shop to learn tlio
“biz” of selling corsets, bustles, pins,
nightgowns, etc., to Indies. This is a
nieo trade for a young n.nn to learn
nin’t it ? AYliy, don’t you know that
they are defrauding women out of their
rights ? A dry uoods shop is no place
for nny young mnn.
Guardians for Drunkards.
A bill hns been introduced in tho
Ohio Legislature to provide guardians
for habitual drjfpkards. There is wis
dom in such a law as Hint, and if eve
ry State in tiie Union would take enro
of hnbitunl drunkards in this way,
there would soon be no habitual drunk

have a tendency to put n stop to intem

The government is linving bad luck

Captain Jnek treated them with cou
tompt—refusing tlio government any
kind of terms, excepting to send him
plenty of powder, lend, rifles, whisky

A Universal Article of Faith.
In these days of religious contention
it has: been thought impossible to in
dicate nil article of faith upon which
all sects and classes were united.-
There 1b one, however, nnd a very no-
tuble'ono too, viz: a belief which is
implicit and universal in the paramount
efficacy of that matchless Household

excited the petty envy of certain splcn
