All farmers who lmvo growing wheat
should avail thomsolvo of tho oppor-
timities oll'ered in tho leisuro days of
winter to top-dross' tlio wheat land
with substances. Ashes, from tho pot
ash contained, afford a most valuablo
fertiliser, not only as direct food for
tho whoat plant, but also for their sol
vent offoot upon somo constituents in
tho soil. They aro also offectual in
destroying tho gorin of Btnutethat was
sown with tho grain ; for smut is but
n fungus growth of diminutive form,
that adhores to tho grain of wheat,
and its growth is analogous to that of
other vegetable forms more apparent
to tho eye. We tako it for granted
that no good farmer 1ms sown his
wheat without soaking tho seed in
bluostonc, or strong brino, both of
which aro effectual in destroying the
norm of smut; but if this woro neg
lected by any, tho top dressing witli
bbIics will supply tho placo of those
proventivo. Eight to ton bushels of
unleachod ashes should bo applied per
noro, and moro would still bo bettor.
This homo fertilizer is generally no
cumulating rapidly on every farm dur
ing tho wmtor, and is too often loft
to wasteful exposure to tho ruins of
winter. Leached ashes aro also of
muoh importance, as they contain salt
highly conducive to plant growth.
The agricultural world hns never
yet settled the question as to tho val
ue of common salt ns a fertilizer; but
any farmer who will apply it to his
growing whoat nt tho rate of at least
fifty pounds, and not ovor one hundred
pounds per aero, can determine the
question for himsolf when towards the
time of harvost,ho perceives tho thrift,
ness of the straw; the plumpness of
tho grain, and tho jgroatly increased
yield over that of any portion of the
field that was not treatod with salt.—
There is danger in tho uso of salt
in excessivo quantities as a fertilizer,
nnd thoreforo wo fix tho precautionary
limit of not over ono hundred pounds
por aero. The price of salt does not
place it beyond economical uso as a
fertilizer as in almost all section of
tho oldor States tho quantity judi
ciously applied to an acre can bo pur
chased nt from sixty conts to-n dollar
and a quarter. Salt is not only stim
ulating to tho growth, and effective in
tho yiold of wheat, but produces oar'
lier maturity of tho crop; thus nffor
ding an avonuo of escapo from that
other malady of the whoat plant, rimt
on tho stem and blade, 'to which our
wheat crops in tho South are in'groat
or peril than from smut. Bust is gen
erally an almost oompleto blight, while
smut is usually but damaging to the
quality of tho crop produced.—Rural

Fruit should constitute a part of

Mixed Grain,
An eastern farmer says: It lias
boon our custom for several years to
sow a mixturo of oats and wheat for
feeding stock, two bushels of oats and
ono of whoat to tbo acre. Tlio yiold
in bushels is groat. Tlio quality of
the product is very superior; tho wheat
is vory plump; it makes a heavy, rich
and nutritous food for stock. Peas and
oats are frequently sown together, to
bo used as food for young stock.—
Nothing is hotter ns a flesh-forming
food. Oats and barley aro also raised
together. Wo should supposo tbo bar
ley would ripen nnd burst tbo shell
boforo the oats would mature. It is
said the barley is retarded in ripon-
ing by tbo slmdo of tbo oats, so that
both reach maturity at the same time.

Tho following bit at tho wator-ouro

a conceit. It is, said ho, neither now
nor wonderful, for it is as old ns tho
deluge, which in my opinion, killed,
