A tall, dark woman, was flitting
about getting supper. She looked up,
he entered, saying—
“You nro Into to-night.”
“Yes,” ho said gloomily.
And going to tho cradle ho took up
tho six-weeks’-old baby, nnd sorrow

And n dark look accompanied tho

The poor husband now covered bis

aloud. Tilts seemed to encoarngo his
ife to go on, for she uttered words
more and more bitter, until, at last, al
most In n state of frenzy, tho wretched
man rushed from tlio house to the
nearest public house, nnd there sought
to bury thoughts of the past and fu
turo in tlio bottom of a ruin cup.
In the meantime, James Hawley, his
companion in labor, entered his home
witli-n very sad aonntenunec. But be
fore he hail stepped over the threshold

around his neck, and a pair of sweet
lips pressed to his,
lie returned the salutation sadly
and then asked after the baby.
“She is sleeping sweetly in her cradle,
She has been a perfect little darling

ticed that something was wrong.
“Yc3; I was discharged to-night,
and don’t know ns I can get anything
llioro to*do until spring. Business is
so dull.”
“Is that nil ?” exclaimed his wife,
with a sign of relief. “I thought
was something terrible, tho way you
looked.”
“And is it not terrible enough ? Wlmt
will becomo of us this winter, if I am
out of employment?”
-“The same God who feeds the spar-

“God bless you, Mnry 1 There

“And now let us have supper," said

In the evening it was determined
that tlio quarter’s rent should bo paid
immediately, a now supply of coal ob

"nines took it all in a glance, ho groat-

“Is that it ?” said Ids wife, in soft,
rippling tones. And tripping up stairs
she soon returned with two ten dollar
bills in her hand.
“Whore did you got them ?” ho ex
claimed eagerly turning them over and
over in Ids hnnd, as if to ascertain
wliotlior they wore really genuiuo or-
not.
“I earned them,” said Ids wife, gnl-
, “I knit nfghnns, shawls, children's
sneques, hoods nml socks; nt first on-
ly for tlioso whom I providentially
heard wished articles of that kind;

“And kept it all a secret from me?”
“Yes; I thought you Would bo wor-
lying for fear that I was doing too
much. I love to knit dearly, and con-
sidcr it more of a pleasant pastimo

“God be praised for giving mo such
wife I” said her husband, earnestly.
And, pressing bis wife and child close-
to his bosom, said—
“Her children rise up, and call her
blessed; her husband also, nml lie
prniseth her; for many daughters have
done virtuously,, but thou cxoellcth

Twenty years have passed, mid Jns.
Ilhwlcy is a rich mini. But Joseph
Smith is a confirmed drunknrd, while
his wife lias long since passed from the
earth, a victim of mysery nnd want.
Why will not nil wives assist their
lui9bamls to bear tbeir trials with will
ing hands and lien its? If they would
do this, how many families would be
saved from ruin, nnd how sweet would
be the reward, not only on earth, but
in beaveu.
The Deacon Puzzled.
Deacon Johnson is a great temper
ance man, and sets n good exnmple
to total nbstinanco ns fur as he is
seen.
Not long ago ho employed a enrpon
ter to ninkc some alterations in his
parlor. In repairing the corner near
the fire-place it was found necessary
to remove the walnsebttlng, when; lol
a discovery was made that astonished
everybody. A bruce of deenhtors, a
tumbler, nnd a pitcher, were cosily re
posing there ns if they had stood there
from the' beginning.
Tlio deaeon wns summoned, and ns
lie beheld the blushing bottles lie ex
claimed :
“Well, I declare, that is curious,
sure enough, It must be that old
Bains left them when he went outs’of
this ’ere house thirty years ago.”
“Perhaps lie did,” returned tlio car
penter; but, deacon, the ico in that
pitcher must have been friz mighty
hard to stop till this time."
Story of a Picture,
A painter onco wanted a pioturo of
innocence, nnd drew the likeness of a
child at prayer. The little suppliennt
was kneeling beside his mother; the
palms of liis uplifted hands were rover,
ently pressed together; his rosy checks
spoke of health, and his mild blue eye
was upturned with the expression of
devotion and peace. Tlio portrait of
young Rupert was much prized by the
painter, who hung it up on his study
wall and called it “Innocence.” Years
passed away, and tlio artist became
an old man. Still tlio picture hung
there. He had often thought of paint
ing a counterpart—tho picture of
“Guilt,” but had not found an oppor
tunity. At last he effected his purpose
l>y paying a visit to a neighboring goal,
Oil tho damp floor of his cell lay n
wretched culprit named Bandall, heav

hollow Ida eye; vieo wns visible in his
face. The painter succeeded nilmir

and Ilandnll were hung side by side,
for Innocciico and Guilt. But who

Flour-Making.
A revolution is llkoly .to tnko plnoo
soon Id tho process of flour-making
It lias been started in Englnnd. The
grain Is crushed by numerous Uttlo
trip hammers, attached to tho proper
maohinory to produce tlio results de
sired. Tho now maohinory 1b very
cheap, and does its work in a scientific
manner. The flour produced is said
to be far superior to that obtained by
grinding. A pounding mill, costing
$1,000 will produce ns much flour ev
ery day ns an old-fashioned mill cost
ing $5,000. Tho now mill is very
simple. Wbcn a hammer is out of
order it can bo replaced at a trifling
cost. •

A Fearful Doiuestlo Tragedy.
A most liorriblo ease of premeditated

Signs nf Dentil
The Academy of Sciences of Paris,
111 1870 offered a prize of twenty thous
and francs for some simple and posi
tive signs of death, which any non-pro
fessional person could understand nnd
apply. Tlio most practical and satis
factory ono given (says tlio British
Medical Prest and Circular) is men
tioned in a Into number of Vircliow’s
Archio. It depends upon the fact that
no matter how profound tlio syncope
or how death-like tlio person nmy ap

ever feebly, tlio person is' not dead—'•
All that is necessary, therefore, is to
tie a string firmly around the finger of
tlio supposed corpse; if tlio blood cir
culates in tho least, tlio whole finger,
from tlio string to tho tip, will swell
nnd generally turn a bluish rod. TliiB
test is exceedingly simple and conclm

Tlio death of A. W. Fcnno, of
