Identifying: Mr. Johnson.
From the New York Sun.
“Is there a Mr. Johnson in tlie car?”
called the conductor, as he entered a
coach on a Lehigh Valley train and held
up a telegram to view.
“There is!” replied three men in cho
rus, as they rose up.
“But this dispatch is for John John
son.”
“That’s me!” replied two of them,
while the third looked relieved and sat
down.
“Which of you is married?’
the conductor.
“I am!” both answered.
“Well, L think this dispatch relates to
the birth of twins at home, and is con
gratulatory.”
“That lets me out, thank heaven!” ex
claimed one Johnson, as he sat down to
wipe his brow, while the other flushed
red and white for a moment and then
received the dispatch.

Wliat the Old Man Paid for a Young: Wife.
Tlie same old story of “woman’s influ
ence over man” again shows up over in
Southern Illinois. In the recorder’s of-
flee in one of the noi'tliern Egyptian coun
ties there was recently placed on record
a waranty deed to 270 acres, the grantor
in this instrument being an old man and
the grantee a young woman, and it read:
“For, and in consideration of the prom
ise of grantee to marry said grantor with
in one month from this date,” and “this
deed is made on the express condition
that in case the marriage is never con
summated this deed is to be null and
void, otherwise to remain in full force.”
The sequel was that the “said grantee”
and “grantor” were united in wedlock,
and the young lady has the old man and
his 270 acres of land, while he has the
lady and what charms may he with her.
