Chattanooga, Tenn., March 31.
—In a fit of jealous frenzy, C. N.
Rudd, a well-to-do citizen from
Sparta, Tenn., killed himself Tues
day morning in Highland Park, a
suberb of this city.
Rudd and his wife, a handsome
young woman about twenty years
of age, came here about a wek ago.
The young husband, after a long
search for employment had been
promised a position Tuesday. To
lis great surprise when he went
to their boarding house yesterday
to tell Mrs. Rudd the good news,
he found a note from her stating
that she had ceased to love him,
and was going away.
Rudd made a wild run for the
depot and intercepted his wife just
as she was about to step on the
train to Nashville.
A sensational scene ensued.
The husband first threatened and
then pleaded with his wife to re
turn to him, while a crowd looked
on in wonder. At length she re
luctantly consented to return with
him.
Since that time Rudd had been
frantic with rage and jealousy,
tearing his hair and clothes and
pacing his room like a mad man.
Yesterday morning he came to
the city and bought a large quan
tity of morphine, giving a motor-
man a note which he wanted sent
to the Times. Noting Rudd’s sus
picious actions, the motorman read
the note, which proved to be an
incoherent statement of his trou
bles with his wife, ending with the
announcement that he would kill
both his wife and himself.
In the meantime Rudd had re
turned to his boarding house,
where he became very violent. In
a few minutes the landlady heard
a scream. Then the door o‘f the
married pair burst open.
Mrs. Rudd rushed from the room
pursued by her husband, who was
brandishing a heavy pistol. Just
as his wife reached the steps Rudd
fired at her, and then put the pis
tol to his head and blew out his
brains.
Mrs. Rudd was not injured.
Before his marriage Mrs. Rudd
was a Miss Parker, a member of a
prominent family at Sparta, Tenn.
Rudd is also of a good family.
Nothing damaging to Mrs.
Rudd’s character has been heard
or was uttered by the man before
he died
