presentments for the April
Term, 1897.
THEY recommend a NEW JAIL,
And also an Equnl Division of the
Legal Advertising of Whit
field County. '
Ge orgla, Whitfield County,
We, the Graqd Jury, chosen
and sworn for the April term,
189 k Whitfield Superior Court,
respectfully submit the following
general presentments.
We have by committee exam
ined the Justice Court dockets of
the various districts of the county
and rind them neatly and correct-
iy kept with the exception of an
occassional failure to properly
itemize or sign.
We find the books of the var*
ions county officers well and eor-
rectiv kept, and we hereby ex
press our full confidence in their
ability and integrity.
We have examined the Court
House with the various offices,
an d while we fiAd nothing to con
demn. we respectfully suggest a
oenerai cleaning up of the rooms,
in most of which we find a con
siderable accumulation of litter
and cob webs.
We find as to the condition of
the jail that at present it is as se
cure as it can be made under the
circumstances. A.s to the recent
jail delivery we wish to say, that,
in our opinion, it was not the fault
of the Sheriff or the Jailor, but
was due to an error in the judge
ment of the board of Commission
ers in the manner of having the
jail repaired after the recent fire.
We find that the prisoners in
the jail have not a sufficient
amount of bedding to keep them
comfortable, and we recomend
that it be furnished at once.
We recommend the building of
a new jail to cost not less than
48,000, nor more than $10,000,
and we recommend the levying of
a sufficient tax for that purpose,
to be raised within three years.
Our committee visited and ex
amined the C *unty Poor House
and find the farm and premises in
good condition, and inmates well
taken care of. Cost per capita
about |36 per annum. Number
of inmates at present, seventeen.
Whites, fourteen; negroes, three.
We find the public roads of the
county, with some exceptions, in
as good condition as the amount
of work and money expended up
on them will warrant, considering
the season and the fact that the
majority of the Springs working
has not yet been done. We find
that rhe road Commissioners of
Upper Tenth District failed to
expend the money appropriated to
said district for the year 1896.
Consequently the roads in that
district are in bad condition. We
bud this true to some extent in
several other districts in the
county and we suggest that the
Board of Commissioners insist
ffiat these moneys be expended
^heu available. •
W e find a practice quite com
mon among the district road com
missioners, viz.: That of drawing
warrants on the treasury, payable
10 themselves. While we do not
question the integrity of these
Commissioners, yet we must con
demn this practice, and hold that
% should, in all cases, be made
P a yable to contractors or work-
rQen - it is the sense of this body
^ai our county is not yet in a
edition to adopt the convict
System of working the public roads,
recommend that the board
r oads and revenues levy a tax
^ seven and one-half cents on the
of taxable property to be
88 a road fund.
tusmess
We
recommend John
Notary Republic in the 628th
district, and F. M, Babb to be
Notary Republic in the 1288d dis
trict.
We have received and adopted
the report of W. H. Wilson who
was appointed by the Grand Jury,
April 1896, to examine the "books
and accounts of the county officers.
We recommend that he be paid
$50.00 for this work, and we here
by appoint him for the same ser
vice in the year 1897.
We hereby assess and levy a
tax of one mill on the $100.00 on
the taxable property of the county
to be used to supplement the pub
lic school fund.
We recommend that the bounty
advertising be given equallylto the
Dalton Argus and NobthMIeob-
gia Citizen. pu ‘
We congratulate his feonor,
Judge Fite, upon the able manner
in which he conducts the
of the Court.
We extend our thanks 'To the
Court, to Solicitor Maddox, Sheriff
Johnson and the other officers of
the Court for courtesies extended
bur body.
We recommend that these pre
sentments be published in the Dal
ton Argus and the Nobth Geor
gia Citizen.
Respectfully submitted,

Whitfield Singing- Convention.
The Whitfield County Singing
Convention meets with Five
Springs church on Saturday and
Sunday, May 1st and 2d, and the
president. Prof. Edward Roberts,
requests us to say that a full at
tendance is desired. Come on
Saturday with a determined pur
pose to learn as much as possible,
as well as to give others the bene
fit of. what you know, and then
come on Sunday with your hearts
full of praise and a determination
to make all the exercises conducive
to the spiritual edification of all
who attend.
The leading thought in these
conventions is the improvement of
sacred song in the churches and
Sunday schools of the county, but
the spiritual uplift which comes
from a united praise service is of
great value if all can be induced
to make melody in their hearts as
well as with their voices. Bring
your Revival Choir No. 2 with
you, and come expecting a revival
of the spirit of praise in your
hearts.
Was It a Mad Dog?
R. L. Baynes and Charley Wil
liams, of Spring Place, were en-
route to Dalton to attend court on
Monday morning. A dog was
passing them on the road when
Mr. Baynes struck at him with a
hickory. The dog turned and bit
Williams on the hand. The dog
afterwards tried to bite other trav
elers on the road, and the supposi
tion is he was mad. Mr. Williams
hurried to town and called on Dr.
J. F. Harris for treatment to pre
vent hydrophobia.

Is a blood disease and only a blood reme
dy can cure it. So many people make
the mistake of taking remedies which
at best are only tonics and cannot possi
bly reach their trouble. Mr. Asa Smith,
Greencastle, Indiana, says: “For years
I have suffered with Sciatic Rheuma
tism* which the best physicians were un
able to relieve. -I took many patent
medicines but they did not seem to
'reach my trouble. I gradually grew
worse until I was un
able to take my food
or handle myself in
any way;-1 was abso
lutely helpless. Three
bottles of S.S.S. re
lieved me so that I
•was soon able to move
my right arm; before
long I could walk
across the room, and
when I had finished one dozen bottles
was cured completely and am as well ar
ever. I now weigh 170.”
A Real Blood Remedy.
S.S.S. cures Scrofula, Cancer, Eczema,
and any form of blood troubles. If you
have a blood disease, take a blood medi
cine—S.S.S. {guaranteedpurely vegeta-
table) is exclusively for the blood and
is recommended for nothing else. It
forces out the poison matter permanent
