Jv M.i Vaughn, of Graysville,
Ga.; urns in Dalton on Monday.
He had been collecting relics from
all the surrounding; .country*
canteen^* wooden and tin sabres,
scabbords, old papers, pipes which
had" been (hag fidm Ifrdia'n ifioufids.
Among the many interesting
things he had was a .Cleveland
Banner, published at Cleveland,
Tenn., Thursday, Sept. 4, 1862.
One of the numerous peculiar
items was the following: “My
brother,” said a good old back-
woods preacher, “I’m gwine to
preach you a plain sarmint, that
even wimmin and niggers can un
derstand. You can find my text
in the first five verses of two-eyed
chapter of one-eyed John.” It
was some time before it was per
ceived that he meant 11 chapter
of I John.
A GOOD SUGGESTION.
What Dalton Merchant WU1 Take the
Initial Step?
All over the South it is custom-
aiy for all of the business houses
to close on memorial day, the 26th
of April.
In Dalton we have our memo-,
riul services on the 10 th of May
on account of the flowers blooming
later here than farther South.
Now I have never known all of
the business houses to close on
any memorial day iu the past.
Why not follow the custom of
other southern cities and do honor
to our dead by suspending busi
ness for that one evening? Will
not some merchant be patnotic
enough to head the honor toU of
of those .houses who will close on
that evening ?

I think that is why we prohib

ever, I will not ask any one to be
a prohibitionist. From now on I
will say, “ be ye temperate.”
I cannot take our record and

I voted for Levering in pur last

our men vote with the crowd that
had whiskey, and'they control the

the State, and they expect us; to
vote for them as we have done. I
