THE NORTH GEORGIA CITIZEN, DALTON, GA.
fully. When finally they desisted
and left the unfortunate moun
taineer, he recovered sufficiently
to go to Cartersville and swear
outi warrants against the whole
gang. All the men were arrested
and tried before Judge Collins,
and bound over. 'Four of them
gave bond, but the two Verhine
boys could- not make bond, and
were brought to Atlanta to be put
in jail here.
Stegall stated yesterday that he
intended to prosecute the men to
the very last. The accused men
deny that Stegall’s story is true.
Judge Collins considered the case
against the men very grave, and
required a bond of $1,000 from
each of them.
The two. Yerhipe boys are noted
characters, and are well known to
the revenue men.

W. C. Stegall Says Moonshin
ers Assaulted Him.
THOUGHT HE WAS A TRAITOR
Day JAfter he Visited Cartersville
Revenue* IVSen Raided Their Still
and he was Suspected. '
If W. C. Stegall should live to
be 200 -years old he would never
forget a bloody experience he had
with the whitecaps in the moun
tains of North Georgia two weeks
ago.
The affair which has just come
to light here, is like a chapter from
the history of the dark days of the
past.
In this case Stegall claims that
six men assaulted him and that
had he not shown splendid fight
ing qualities he would have been
killed. He says that -the white-
of the most deter-
turing concerns wno are in vv abu-
ington are studying the new tariff
bill with great care, and most of
them find it more satisfactory than
the house bill, although such
measures are so complicated that
it is difficult for the sharpest ex
pert to comprehend them without
several days’ study. It may be
seen from a glance, however, that
it is not a sectional bill, like that
which passed the house. It is
not a New England bill. The fa
vors of protection are more evenly
distributed, and many of the little
items that caused so much criti
cism in the house bill have been
stricken out. The average duties
imposed by the senate bill are
much lower than those in the
house bill. They are lower than
the McKinley hill of 1890, and
are very little in advance of the
present law in most of the sched
ules. While the calculations are
not yet completed, the average
rate of duty is thought to be 30
per cent less than the Dingley
bill, if the new duties that are im
posed upon tea, hides and some
other articles are not considered.
There are 1,212 amendments.
There are only three of the 216
pages which have not been
amended.

Senator Allison says the senate
bill will yield about $40,000,000
more revenue than the house bill.
He figures $13,000,000 additional
from beer and $10,000,000 addi
tional from tea. He says a sub
stitute for the reciprocity section
will be reported to the senate in a
few days, and that it will be a
feature in which reciprocity will
be reciprocal.

caps were six
mined and reckless moonshiners
in Cherokee county, and that they
were spurred on in their hatred
against him by the full belief that
he had informed the revenue offic
ers that they were running an il
licit distillery.
Stegall says he had four fights
with the men at different times,
and up to the last time, when the
whole band of alleged whitecaps
assaulted him, he seems to have
been the victor. The whole affair
is rather mixed. Stegall is now
in Fulton county jail, where he
was brought Thursday night on
the charge of making illicit whis
key, against the meii who, he
claims, attempted to kill him. They
are all accused of operating the
same still.
The alleged facts in the case as
given by Stegall are these: He
says that one day about two weeks
ago he went to Cartersville from
his home near the Cherokee mills,
to buy some provisions. He re
turned home that same night, and
the following d^y the revenue of
ficers made a raid in that vicinity,
and arrested himself and six others:
T. L. Connor, Tom Megar, Charley
Verhine, George White, John
Verhine and a man named Page.
All of them were tried before Unit
ed States Commissioner Collins, at
Cartersville, and placed under
bond on the charge of moon-
shining.
Stegall claims that the other
men at once suspected him of be
ing the informant who had notified
the Fevenue officers of the fact
that a still was in operation in
their vicinity. The revenue men
had not been working that partic
ular locality, and the fact that
they made a raid on the day im
mediately following Stegell’s visit
to Cartersville, led the moonshin
ers to believe that he had betrayed
them. According to Stegall this
enraged them against him.
Stegall says that they made
things right lively for him after
that time. The very next day hq
