The Epworth League held its
last regular meeting on Thursday
night and on Friday they were
favored with an interesting talk
from Mr. Witham, whose addres-
es to young people are famous.
.eo. L. Bond Liberated.
Quite a dramatic scene was en
acted at the Sunday-school of the
First Presbyterian Church Sunday
morning, which caused Geo. L.
Fond to be set free until the next
term of Court. Mr. Bond had
been involved in some trouble be
fore the Catoosa Court, and while
lie was absent from the room at
the last term bis bond was forfeit
ed. Sunday morning Superinten
dent T. R. Jones arose and
said that he thought it was as
much the duty of a Sunday-school
to help those in trouble as any oth
er line of work and drawing a bond
for $100 passed it around. The
bond was signed by enough men
io make it good for two hundred
thousand dollars and Mr. Bond
was turned loose.
A Bicycle Parade.
The wheelmen of the city will
get up a mammoth bicycle parade
within the next few days in which
a hundred or more bicyclists will
ride. It will be an imposing look
ing affair and will be well worth
seeing.
A Base Ball Game.
The boys are endeavoring to
get up a base ball game with Tun
nel Hill for Saturday. A chal
lenge lias been received from Tun
nel Hill and if Dalton accepts it
will be a lively contest.
Will not Resign.
For some time a rumor has been
afloat in the city that Capt. T. J.
Peeples would resign his position
as agent for the W. & A. R. R.,
here. A Citizen reporter met
Captain Peeples and he said most
emphatically that he intended do
ing no such thing and had never
had any such intention. Captain
Peeples makes a splendid agent
and tlie company suffers no loss
by his position here.
Do Yon Ride?
A Citizen reporter dropped
the carriage and wagon re
home with him from Detroit a
bronze souvenir which is the exact
size and weight a silver dollar
would be if it contained a hundred
cents worth of silver bullion at the
present price. It is as big as the
diameter of an average base lia.ll
and as thick as a water mellon
rind.
Crowds at The Park,
The newspapers report great
crowds visiting Chicamauga Park
these lovely days. The park is
in the pink of perfection now and
each day sees an improvement.
This is the time of the year to go
over there and spend a few days.
Estate Being Sold Today.
The estate of the late Col. J*.

It consists of houses, lots, land,

of buggies and vehicles ever
brought to Dalton. They are
certainly elegant and will be sold
cheap for cash. If you need a
good, substantial, finely finished
and cheap buggy, the Berry-Bry-
ant Company is the place to get
one.
Rooked the Pay Car.
Andy Hall and Henry Griffin
of this place and another “ coon ”
from Chattanooga rocked the W.
& A. R. R. pay train near Ring-
gold yesterday. They broke out
a window and came near injuring
an occupant. They were arrested,
bound over and brought here for
safe keeping.

The West Side Candy Kitchen.
One of the most popular resorts
for the past few evenings has
been the “West Side Candy Kitch
en,” owned and operated by Mary
and Emily Carter, Clayton Moore
and Mac Robertson. These chil
dren set up a store and cream par
lor on a small scale in John
Moore’s buggy house, that was
quite as popular as “Nunnaly’s”
until yesterday afternoon, when it
closed. Fruits, candies and cake
were sold in abundance and busi
ness was rushing all the time.
They Were Right.
Three well known men were
sitting in front of the opera house
yesterday discussing the merits of
North Georgia and comparing it
with Texas. All three had been
out there and tried it. One of
them is a farmer, one a profession
al man and the other a politician.
All three were raised on a farm.
They enumerated the things that
could be grown here, such as
wheat, corn, oats, rye, barley, cot
ton, fruits, melons, berries, vege
tables, cattle, horses, mules, hay,
grass, hogs, sheep, produce of all
kinds, and came to the conclusion
that they could make more money
and live better and cheaper than
in Texas, and they had it down
right-
A Paying Industry.
The following industrial item is
clipped from yesterday’s Chatta
nooga Times:
The Chattanooga Pulp and Pulp Board
Company is running the plant near the
river double turn, doing all the business
it can possibly do, and with orders
ahead.
This is the concern that wanted
to locate in Dalton and only
asked twelve hundred dollars sub
scription in stock. Straw board
is a paying article. Tar board
sells for one hundred dollars a ton
and costs only ten to make. The
Citizen made several endeavors
to get people here interested in
this enterprise, but without avail.
Will Move the Houses.
The city council has decided to
move the summer houses now
adorning the city park. A Citi
zen .reporter discovered this by
using a telescope to read the lit
tle type written notice pasted on
the lintel of the council chamber.
The material is advertised for sale.
Anyone interested can borrow
The Citizen telescope and hunt
for the legal notice authorizing it.
Cotton Compress for Dalton.
The Citizen learns this morn
ing that the Tennessee River Cot
ton Compress Company intends
moving its big plant hack to Dal
ton to remain permanently. Dal
ton is a better city for the business
than Chattanooga and it is highly
probable that the move will be
made and that at once for the cot
ton season will be in full blast be
fore very long. Dalton always
welcomes an enterprise and The
Citizen hopes to see the compress
operating in this city in the near
future.
Nearer My God to Thee.
Monday four nice-looking, in
telligent, well-dressed drummers
were sitting out on the front of
Hotel Dalton with their luggage
by them and their umbrellas and
canes in their hands waiting for
the trains to arrive on which they
were to depart. One of them be
gan whistling the air of Nearer
My God to Thee, and the other
three began huming it. Presently
all four began singing the words,
and an interested, appreciative
crowd gathered to hear them. Per
fect quiet reigned while the quar
tette sweetly sang the verses, and
were about to close when the whis
tle blew and the “ boys ” hustled
down to the train ; one for Mari
etta, two for Rome, and the other
for Cartersville, but not before the
crowd detected big tear drops in
their eyes. It was an unusual
scene.
