The war has commenced in
earnest in our community, and the
regulars have their hands full of
fighting. General Green has in
vaded the fields with a strong and
well-organized force, and the fight
is now on. The result of this
war will be of greater moment to
this country than the war with
Spain.

hind with their work on account
of the protracted rains of the past
two weeks.
Corn planting has commenced,
and some cotton has been planted.

Political matters are still cutting
very little figure in the country.
All who heard Judge Atkinson’s
speech speak very highly of his
ability.
Our Populist friends are having
Saturday night meetings all over
the country, and such speakers as
Dr. McKnight, L. H. Quillian and
other good speakers are educating
the people, who listen gladly.
Apropos of the Maine disaster
it may interest the curious to note
the coincidence, that the number
of men killed by that explosion
exactly tallys with the number of
Confederate soldiers killed by the
explosion of Burnsides’ mine at
Petersburg in 1864—256 in each
case. (See Field’s U. S. History e )
