HER FROWN.
There is magic in the music when the
fountains of her mirth
Into liquid waves of laughter ripple
down;
And her eyes a deeper rapture
In their dreamy moments capture,
But I cherish most her features archly
gathered in a frown.
In the masquerade of faces desolation
wears a smile,
While the gravest in demeanor is the
clown;
But 1 know that in revealing
Every transient thought and feeling
She is nearest when her forehead
sweetly furrows with a frown.
^Ung Troubles arjd Gonsliniption
Can be GUfed.
In her eyes there gleams a splendor
which no shadows can subdue,
Like the glint upon the waving fields
of brown;
As the glowing embers mingle
With the ashes on the ingle
Glows her soul among the thoughts
which gravely wait upon her frown.
All the shifting lights and shadows which
her April eyes assume
Wear a charm of which this aspect is
the crown;
And if she could guess the ardor
Of my thoughts as I regard her,
How I wonder would her features
coldly gather in a frown!

SAM JONES ON THE SITUATION-
How He Would Dispose of Spain if
it Were Left to Him.
Rev. Sam P. Jones was in the
city yesterday afternoon long
enough to give expression to his
views of President McKinley’s
Cuban message. He said :
“ I have read the President’s
message cursorily and I get this
idea from it. He would have
congress throw this whole matter
back on his hands with the under
standing that he will act for war
or peace, according as the circum
stances may demand for the pro
tection of the honor of this coun
try, or for the best interests of
Cuba. It is not a war message.
“ I am astonished at one feature
of the message. Armed interven
tion as to both the insurgents and
Spain. If I understand this sen
tence, it means simply that the
United States authorities are em
powered to slop the fight between
these two peoples and dictate the
terms on which peace shall be
given. This dictation is to be
backed up by the army of the
United States, either against Spain'
or the insurgents, demanding that
the obiter dictu of the United
States be carried out. We may
have to lick both crow«ls before
this is over with, but I never have
believed that we would go to war
with Spain. The game is not
worth the candle. I believe the
United States can intervene with
out war and settle that question,
which is far better for all parties.
“ Every busted white man and
every penniless negro is hot for
war, but if a man owns as much
as five dollars, he seems to shrink
from war as fearing that it will in
terfere with his financial arrange
ments.
“ Personally, I have no taste
for military glory. That sort of
fame is all in my eye. I’d rather
be a home guard private than a
brigadier coming home to die.
“ I have no respect for the dude
going around with an arsenal in
his hip pocket to protect his honor.
It is hard for- a fellow like him to
protect a thing he hasn’t got If
he had the right sort of honor, he
would not have that arsenal in his
pocket.
“ I am not afraid of this great
country going down under the in
sult and contumely or the arro
gance of Spain. Poor old Spain,
whose stock in trade is cunning,
treachery and bankruptcy. They
could not hurt the honor of Dry
Tortugas, much less that of the
United States. A great big six-
fellow slapping down a little dwarf
because the dwarf has insulted his
honor. A gentleman won’t insult
me, and a vagabond can’t. The
town bully was walking down the
street, and*, meeting a gentleman,
said to him :
“ ‘ Get out of my way ; I never
give the road to a dog.”
“The gentleman stepped aside
and said : ‘ I always do ; pass on.’
If we could do Spain like the fel
low did the skunk, just let him
put his head in the fence and stink
himself to death.
“It would be funny if interven
tion resulted in both Spain and
the insurgents jumping us, Spain
kicking us in the belly and the in
surgents butting us behind. Then
we would be in the middle of two
bad fixes. Let them fight it out
like Kilkenney cats.
“ I believe McKinley is wise
and will do what is best.”—At
lanta Journal.

Why the Georgians Voted Against it.
Eight Georgia members voted
against the majority resolutions in
the house yesterday because they
did not go far enough. The ma
jority report of the foreign rela
tions committee recommended in
tervention without immediate re
cognition of Cuban independence.
The minority report endorsed in
tervention with immediate recog
nition of Cuban independence.
The majority report was adopted
by a strictly party vote, the Demo
crats voting against it. When
the minority report was lost most
of the Democrats then voted for
the majority report, but eight
Georgia members—Messrs.^Lester,
Adamson, Brantley, Griggs, How
ard, Lewis, Maddox and Tate—
voted against it because of its fail
ure to recognize Cuban independ
ence. This should be stated in
justice to these gentlemen.—Sa
vannah Press.
I heard of Dr. Bell’s Pine Tar
Honey, and seeing many recom
mendations from different persons
of its wonderful valuable merits, I
thought I would try a bottle. I
have been seriously affected for
twenty-five years with a cough and
pains in my side and breast that
were causing me a miserable life.
I spent hundreds of dollars with
doctors and for medicine, but
every thing failed until I found
this wonderful remedy. It beats
the world and has saved my life.
I recommend Dr. Bell’s Pine Tar
Honey to everybody with weak
lungs. It is a great success. J.

May Get Wrong Man.
The plan suggested of voting
for the names of candidates for
governor instead of delegates to
the State convention in the com
ing state primary may bring about
the nomination of a man who is
not the choice of a majority of the
party in the State. Suppose that
in a certain county there are 1,000
Democratic voters. Suppose 400
of them are “ Candler ” and 600
“anti-Candler,” but the latter di
vided between Berner and Atkin
son. Then the vote would show
Candler 400, Berner 300, Atkin
son 300. Who would get the del
egation ? Why, Candler, of course,
while the anti-Candler vote is in
the majority.—Augusta Herald.
A FULL HOUSE.
It is true wisdom for every
body to take a thorough course of
Swift’s Specific just at this season
of the year. The blood is sluggish
and impoverished, and the system
is full of impurities which should
be eliminated. In addition to
thoroughly cleansing the blood,
and toning up the system so as to
avoid loss of appetite and a gen
eral run-down feeling in the
spring, 8. S. S. so strengthens and
builds up as to fortify against the
many forms of dangerous illness
that abound during the hot sum
mer season. It is a very small
matter to take this precaution but
it insures health and strength all
summer. Swift’s Specific
