WAR NEWS IN BRIEF.
A Spanish spy was caught
on the St. Paul.
The Oregon and the Mari
etta have left Rio Janeiro.
The bombardment of Ma
nilla is now going on.
Both houses adopt the
conference report on the
fortifications bill.
A late dispatch says that
the Queen Regent is willing
to cede Cuba to the United
States and cease hostilities.
A dispatch from London
says the Philippines have
fallen, and that the* stars
and stripes float leisurely
over them.
It is reported that Presi
dent Dole has offered Ha
waiian ports for coaling
stations. A resolution to
annex the islands was in
troduced in the house.
The big ships of Sampson’s
fleet, after coaling at Key
West, set sail presumably
for Porto Rico, where, it is
thought, they will meet the
Spanish fleet.
Rioting continues in the
kingdom of Spain, and the
fall of the dynasty is immi

The British Consul at San
tiago de Cuba was assaulted
by the Spanish, after which
the consul killed one, and
was then jailed. Great Brit

A man once wished to make
money.
He secured a good store.
He secured good goods.
He secured good clerks.
He made no money.
Then^he turned on his store the
light of newspaper advertising and
let the people know he was in bus
iness and why. He kept them in
the dark no longer.
Then he made money.
An exchange recalls an old war
story, which it applies to some of
those persons and papers which
are now trying to keep down the
war spirit. An army chaplain
was preaching one day to the sol
diers about the blessedness of for
bearance and how it was better to
turn the.other cheek. Suddenly
a lieutenant galloped up and yell
ed : “The enemy are in sight;
give ’em h—11, boys.” The chap
lain’s discourse ended instantly,
and his benediction was: “Boys,
obey your commander.”
