Wire-rolled glass is one of the
most recent inventions. The glass,
which is exactly one-quarter of an
inch thick, contains in the center
a wire netting, the meshes of
which are a trifle less than one
inch in diameter. Consequently
the wire does not obscure the
light, and wire-rolled glass, it is
said, will resist fire as long a time
as an equal thickness of iron.
Twenty people own nearly
eighteen per cent, of the real prop
erty within the limits of Greater
New York, and pay taxes upon
nearly $400,000,000 worth of land.
,The tax assessors say that 150
people, whose names might be
taken from the books, own fifty
per cent, of all the real estate in
Greater New York, and the tend
ency is to increase instead of
diminish these enormous holdings.
Before many days the armies of
the United States will be recruited
up to a beef eating capacity of
about 600 big steers a day. Beef
has always been an important arti
cle of diet to the soldiers of this
country, as well as of English
soldiers, but never in American
history has beef been so widely
distributed and in such excellent
condition as just at present. The
army in Manila, which will soon
number 20,000 men, is eating beef
every day.
Trouble with the Cubans is
breeding. Their attitude is one
of sullen hostility toward Ameri
cans. The better class in Cuba
favor the annexation of the island
to the United States, and a ma
jority of the masses are ready and
anxious to work and accept the
shelter and protection afforded by
an American protectorate, but they
are influenced by a certain class of
rabid orators and breeders of se
dition and rebellion against any
thing smacking of law and order.
Gen. Fitzhugh Lee will not
govern Cuba, but will be a candi
date for the U. S. senate from
Virginia.
Dewey had not heard of the
peace proposition and bombarded
and captured the city of Manila
last Saturday.
Judge Hobson, the father of the
Merrimac hero, has been appointed
postmaster at Greensboro, Ala., by
President McKinley. It was'done
without Judge Hobson’s asking
and though a democrat he has ac
cepted. When his commission ar
rived he was the most surprised
man in Alabama.
The Atlanta Commercial has
suspended after five years of bril
liant life.
Hon. John Hay, our minister to
England, will become secretary of
State when Secretary Day retires.
P. J. Corbett killed himself and
wife Tuesday, in San Francisco.
They were parents of Jas. J., the
pugilist.
Millitary law will govern Cuba
and the other islands recently con-
quested.
