The
Girls about to marry should
guard perhaps against choosing
men who are so clever that they
won’t care for their wives, but
they must take thought also
against choosing men who are so
dull that living with them will be
uninteresting. It is just as bad—
worse, perhaps—to marry a man
who does not interest you, as to
marry one whose thoughts you
cannot share.—Chattanooga Times.

The annexation of Cuba to the
United States is one of the inevit
able occurrences of future history,
and it will be to the advantage of
the island if there shall be as little
delay as possible in its consumma
tion. It was not for the territorial
absorption of the island that this
nation went to war. There was a
distinct declaration that the sole
oInject of our military interference
was to put an end to the ruinous
rule of Spain and to relieve the
people of the island from the long
evils of Spanish misgovernment.
The right to rule themselves was
incidental to the purpose of our
interference, which, without being
inconsistent with our declared ob
ject, may be modified by what
may appear to be the capacity or
incapacity of the Cubans for self-
government. The United States
would not be justified in allowing
a condition of disorder in the
islands that would be as great an
evil as Spanish rule. There is re
ported to be a preference for im
mediate annexation on the part of
some Cuban leaders, with whose
aspirations for American citizen
ship President McKinley is said
to be in accord. Our government
will pursue no course in this mat
ter that will conflict with its
avowal of disinterested motives in
acting for the relief of Cuba from
the disastrous domination of Spain.
There is every probability, how
ever, of the appearance of circum
stances under which the annexa
tion of the island will be as neces
sary for its welfare as war its lib
eration from Spanish misrule. We
believe that the people of the
island, very shortly after peace
shall settle the state of affairs, will
be influenced by the conviction
that their best interests will be
promoted by their being invested
with American citizenship, and
will ask for the annexation of their
island to the United States. To
us this appears to be manifest des
tiny.—Savannah Press.
