Gen. Cassius M. Clay has been
granted a divorce from his child
wife, Dora Richardson, who was
once a waiting maid at his home.
The friends of Gen. Miles want
to put him up for the presidency
in 1900.
The third Georgia regiment has
been ordered to Jacksonville, Fla.,
to join Lee’s corps, which are to
form part of the army of occupa
tion of Cuba.
The only five-masted schooner
in the world arrived in Savannah
last week. She is registered from
Providence, R. I., and took 1,500,-
000 feet of lumber and a big lot
of crossties north.
The president is in hopes of
catching the persons who blew up
the Maine and solve that mystery.
The assassins are said to be in
Havana, and are known.
At Cave Springs a hoy was born
the other day with five fingers and
one thumb on each hand. Nature
never makes any mistakes. When
she decided to make Kansas the
banner corn State of the Union
she had to provide additional husk

The daily papers last week pub
lished an accoum of a horse dying
from swallowing a hair of his tail.
A cow on Mr. Will Brown’s plan
tation met with a singular accident
a few days ago, which may result
in her untimely demise. She
tripped and fell over a cobweb and
broke her escutcheon.—Lancaster

The republicans lost thirty-three
seats in the Vermont legislature
by the election on Tuesday. Which
way the wind is blowing is not
hard to tell.
Congressman Steele, of Indiana,
who visited the soldiers at Lexing
ton, Ky., last week, made a speech
to the regiment from his State, in
which he said the volunteers would
all be sent home on furloughs, re
assembled in October and Decem
ber, and sent to Cuba 200,000
strong to protect the Americans
against Cubans, who already, he
said, were ambushing our people
on the island. He declared it the
government’s policy to march an
army from one end of Cuba to the
other, until the insurgents were
willing to allow the country to be
at peace.
The Earl of Minto is to succeed
Lord Aberdeen as governor general
of Canada in October. The Earl
was once a newspaper man, and it
qualifies him for his advancement
by the British government.
Gen. John B. Gordon was asked
by President McKinley to be a
member of the committee to inves
tigate the conduct of the Spanish-
American war, but Gen. Gordon
declined.
The Empress of Austria was
stabbed to death last Saturday at
a hotel in Geneva, Switzerland,
by an Italian, Liugi Laochini.
He was arrested.
New Orleans, Sept. 9.—The
Danish steamship Try reached
here yesterday from Havana with
1,600 goats. They were shipped
from Galveston to Havana in the
belief that the people of that city
would he so hungry that they
would like goat meat, but Gen.
Blanco placed so heavy a tax on
goats that it did not pay to land
them, and they were brought back
to this country.
