Once upon a time an American
taunted an Englishman.
“ How can you endure to be
taxed to support your idle no
bility?” exclaimed the American
warmly.
Then the American paid $1(
ton for his coal in order that the
directors of the trust might pro
cure dukes and things for sons in
law.
This fable teaches that there are
almost as many ways of paying
taxes as of doging the same.—De

The Priest Turned the Joke.
They ‘-tell a story of Father
O’Shea, a priest who was well
known in Washington county,
who had some local note for his
quick wit, says the Pittsburg
News. One of his Presbyterian
friends, was fond of having a joke
with him. They met one day at
the postoffice, where there was
quite a crowd waiting for the dis
tribution of the mail, which had
just arrived.
“ Nice day, Father O’Shea,”
said Harold.£mer-j saidtheman

replied the priest.

of the quber doings down in Tex

Once Dewey’s Love.
A Washington dispatch to the
New York Journal says that the
appointment of the Duke of Arcos
as Spanish minister makes a most
remarkable chapter in the history
of the war. His wife is a beauti
ful Amenean, who was wooed in
vain by Admiral Dewey. Wash
ington is thinking of the strange
situation that may arise when
Dewey returns to this country the
lion of the hour and meets the
Duchess. There is no doubt that
the revenge he got at Manila has
removed every trace of ill feeling
he may have had against the Duke,
but what will be his attitude to
ward the bride, and hers toward
him ?
