Dr. J. F. Harris has repainted
his building on the corner of
Waugh and Selvidge streets.
#
* *
At at early date the Episcopal
church will be nicely repainted
and the ground and walk about
the building improved.
*
* *
Mr. D. G. Bryant has recently
put in good condition -the spacious
grounds about his handsome
suburban home in South Dalton.
*
* *
The Confederate cemetery is
being nicely cleaned by the city
authorities, and by this we show
that our fallen heroes are not for
gotten.
* *
By improving your property
you encourage its value. This
helps you. Not only this, you
inspire others to improve, which
in turn helps them.
*
% *
Mr. Will Foster is rebuilding
his home on Waugh street, be
tween Thornton avenue and Sel
vidge street. When completed,
it will be a handsome place.
*
* *
With two-thirds of the earth’s
surface composed of water, is it
possible that the city of Dalton
can not get enough to keep two
small fountains running in the
parks?
*
* +
The grounds around the First
Baptist church are naturally beau
tiful. With small effort in get
ting a good setting of grass and
keeping it mowed, this would be
a most attractive place.
*
m *
Memorial Park looks quite at
tractive, the grass cut and new
flowers planted. Now, if the
ladies could have a little work
done on the - walks, this park
would be a gem of beauty.
* *
During the past week the First
Presbyterian church lot has been
put in good order by a neat cut
ting of the grass. With the
removal of the rubbish in the
southwest corner and some atten
tion given to the grass plats along
the walks, this property would be
in most excellent condition.
*
* •
Each citizen of Dalton can do
some act or make some sugges
tion that will largely help in the
future growth of the city. The
St. Louis exposition was first sug
gested in an editorial by one of
the St. Louis papers. This one
suggestion has materialized in the
expenditure of more than $15,-
000,000 and the giving to the
world the greatest exposition in
all history.

At Mount Carmel, in Walker
county, the last day of the school
exercises was spent by teacher and
pupils in planting out Bermuda
grass in the grounds, and it is
stated that one more such a day’s
work will give this place the most
beautiful school grounds in the
entire county. A little less of
theory and a little more of piac-
tice is what is needed to make the
improvement movement spread
all over this country.
changed and the ground between
the walks and street will be nicely
sodded in this entire block. If
all the people in each block in the
city would take hold of this work
in a similar way, soon Dalton
would be completely transformed
into a state of cleanliness and
beauty.
RACE SUICIDE
Some
Very
Timely Remarks on a
Important Question.
The esteemed Chicago Journal
dips its oai into the raging sea of
race suicide controversy and says
something. We quote:
Race suicide means, of course
a lessening of a number of chil
dren born to a race. No woman,
it is declared, can do her owr
housework and raise a family
Twenty-five dollars a week is not
enough upon which to support a
family, and, in Chicago, including
the districts of extremest poverty,
the average income of a family is
but fourteen dollars. How can a
home be kept and children raised
on such an income as that ?
A convincing explanation, assuredly.
Who can doubt its soundness?
Let us visit one of the homes where
the income is only fourteen dollars a
week. What do you find there? A
buxom woman, Mrs. Rafferty, cheap
furniture and a half dozen healthy chil
dren. They are happy. A visit to a
residence on the Lake Shore drive is a
natural sequence. There is luxury ; the
mistress never works, of course, but is
quite fend of her single child—whenever
Bhe is at home.
By a united effort, the property
holders on Thornton avenue, be
tween Cuyler and Morris streets,
having the drainage ditches
are
There you have it—the two ex
tremes. Nothing else than race
suicide is expected along the
Lake Shore drive, but Mrs. Raff>
erty is doing her part toward re
plenishing her neck of the earth.
It is the “middle class”—the
great preponderant force in Amer
ican life and affairs—that must
be depended on to maintain the
population equilibrium, if the
United States are to maintain
their Americanism uneontara-
inated.
But very many of the women
who, socially, are between my
lady of the Lake Shore drive and
Mrs. Rafferty are not doing their
patriotic duty in this particular.
Far from it, they are doing their
best to emulate my lady of the
Lake Shore drive—and why?
The answer is in one word—
selfishness. Motherhood is, above
all alse, unselfishness. So far as
the superficial, glittering world
of seeing and being seen is
cerned, the wife who
maternity accepts self-oblitera
tion and social death, in a sense
To this add self-denial, for
clothes for the children means
fewer clothes, as well a3 curtailed
liberty, for the mother. It also
means, perhaps, a plainer menu,
no jewelry, no bonbons, no mati
nees.
The average American woman
of the “middle class” is up in
arms against any such matrimo
nial programme, and her husband
quite concurs with her. The race
may go hang. The clothes, the
menu, the jewelry, the bonbons
and the matinees must come up,
or—dire consequence!—the di
vorce courts yawn for ’em.
This, in an abstract way, is the
milk in the race suicide cocoanut.
The people of the middle classes,
who, for all their superior culture
and vastly superior tastes, have
but slightly larger domestic bud
get than the Rafferty family, are
not willing to make the eacrifices
of the Raffertys at the expense of
their minds, bodies and social
diversions. —Atlanta Constitution
JOHN BARNES DROWNED
At Maddox mil About Noon Last
Saturday.
Johnnie Barnes, a well known
young man of Dalton, was
drowned in the mill pond above
Maddox mill last Saturday just
before noon.
The attendant circumstances,
as we learn them, are particularly
sad. In company with several
other young men, he had gone out
there on a fishing trip, and while
they were in e batteau rowing
around, more for fun than any
thing else, one of his companions
was thrown from the boat by its
being sharply turned. The young
man, not being a swimmer, quick
ly grabbed the side of the shallow
vessel, capsized it and the others,
including Barnes, were thrown
out.
Barnes, also^being unable to
swim, was drowned in the ex
citement. His body was recov
ered in about an hour and brought
to the home of his mother, Mrs.
A. Miller.
The funeral was preached Sun
day afternoon by Rev. E. W.
Way and the interment took
place at West Hill. The pall
bearers were Perry Roberts, Olin
Wrinkle, DeWitt Love, Burt
Spencer, Andy McKay and Frank
Wrinkle. The Iron Moulders
Union No. 365 turned out in a
body and contributed in every
way to the sad occasion to show
their friendship to the deceased
and his family.
EASY WAY TO
CURE CATARRH
Breath Hyomei and Kill All Ca
tarrhal (terms. “Money Back If It
Fails,” Say Hightower & Talley.
There is no dangerous stomach
drugging when using Hyomei.
The healing and aromatic balsams
which compose this wonderful
treatment, are breathed through
a neat pocket inhaler that comes
with every $1 outfit.
In this way, the germ-killing
and health-giving Hyomei pene
trates to the most remote cells of
the lungs. It searches out and
kills disease germs in the air
passages of the head, throat and
nose, soothes and heals the irri
tated mucous membrane, and ab
solutely drives catarrh from the
system.
Such remarkable results have
followed the use of Hyomei by
the best people in Dalton, that
Hightower & Talley , have the
greatest confidence in its power
to cure catarrh. They believe in
it so thoroughly, ..that they will
give their personal guarantee to
refund the money if it does not
cure, the purchaser to be sole
judge.
This is an unusual offer, and
the first time that any medicine
or treatment for the cure of ca
tarrh has been sold in this way.
If it cures, the expense is trifling,
while if it fails, the cost is abso
lutely nothing.
If you are fortunate enough
not to be troubled with catarrh,
tell your friends of Hightower &
Talley’s offer, and get them to
L. & N.’S NEW LINE.
An Extension to be Built from Dalton
to Wetmore.
Representatives of the Louis
ville & Nashville have obtained
options on a right*of way at Dal
ton for the entrance of the A. K.
& N. extension.
In the March issue of the
Record, mention was made of the
movements of a surveying party
who had run a line from Wet-
more, Tenn., to Dalton. The
Record drew the conclusion at
that time that the survey was in
the interest of the L. & N.
It turns out chat the engineer’s
found a route which will give the
L. & N. easy grades and shorten
the distance between Atlanta and
Knoxville fifteen miles.
Seven loads are the most that an
engine can pull from Marietta to
Knoxville over the present line of
the A. K. & N.
By the proposed new line from
Dalton via Wetmore to Knoxville,
one engine will haul 35 loads.
The construction of this road
will commence this year.
The old line of the A. K. & N.
from Wetmore to Marietta will be
used for local business, but all
through traffic will move by way
of Dalton.—Railroad Record.
The Record is a railroad paper
of repute, and its opinions mean a
great deal. It is in close touch
with all matters pertaining to
railroads, such as new construc
tion, etc.
