THE NORTH GEORGIA CITIZEN, DALTON, GA.
r
A MODERN COLUMBUS.
How C. R. Evans Discovered a
Shorter Road from Alaculsv to
Dalton.
Charlie Evans, of Evans & Co. :
and Mrs. Evans; T. S. Shope, of
The Citizen; and George I,. Lewis,
of the Dalton Carriage Company,
spent Sunday at Alaculsy, the
guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Wil-
kison.
They returned to Dalton Mon*,
day via Spring Place, and. while
we don’t propose to make any
mention of the tale they told us
concerning Mr. Lewis’s involun
tary bath in the raging waters of
Mill Creek, yet it should be made
known that Charlie Evans has
surveyed a new road from Ala-
culsy to Dalton.
Now Charlie disdains to follow
beaten paths, anyhow, and in fact
is something of an explorer him
self; so on this Monday morning,
after bidding adieu to their host
and hostess, he remarked:
“Now, folks, as we are all in a
hurry to get back to town and be
gin the new week’s work, we
won’t take the main road we trav
eled yesterday, but I’ll show you
a much shorter one that’ll save us
several miles.”
So off they gayly started, Char
lie guiding the team; and the bah*
ance of the party, having full con
fidence in their driver’s topograph
ical knowledge, heeded naught but
the magnificent, panoramic scenery
which opened before their vision on
every side.
Time sped thus happily on;
mile after mile was traversed.
Finally Shope spoke up:
“Charlie, it doesn’t appear to
me that we are going in the direc
tion of Dalton. Are you sure of
the road?”
“Sure of the road ? of course I
am,” replied Charlie; “you can’t
fool me on any old road. Gid
dap!”
Thus urged, the horses trotted
on toward Dalton (?)
About twelve miles further on,
no sign of Dalton being visible,
Shope again burst forth:
-Charlie, I tell you you are
wrong.”
“Impossible,” calmly answered
Charlie; “I never made a mistake
in a road in my life.”
“Well, I’m going to ask that
man I see coming mule back, any
way.”
“My friend,” he inquired, as
the man drew near, “what is that
‘swish,’ ‘swish’ as of sullen waters
that I hear just in front of us, and
in what part of this terrestrial foot
stool are we ?”
Came the reply: “The sound
you hear is the Coosawattee river,
and you are about a quarter of a
mile from Carter’s Quarter.”
Silence so thick for about a
minute that you could actually
carve it into chunks.
“Well,” at last said Charlie,
“that’s a horse on me.”
With reproach in his eyes, Mr.
Lewis spoke briefly, but emphat
ically:
“Charlie, if I ever conclude to

Over-Work Weakens
Your Kidneys.
Unhealthy Kidneys Make Impure Blood.
All the blood In your body passes through
your kidneys once every three minutes.
The kidneys are your
blood purifiers, they fil
ter out the waste or
impurities in the blood.
If they are sick or out
of order, they fail to do
their work.
Pains, aches and rheu
matism come from ex
cess of uric acid in the
blood, due to neglected
kidney trouble.
Kidney trouble causes quick or unsteady
heart beats, and makes one feel as though
they had heart trouble, because the heart is
over-working in pumping thick, kidney-
poisoned blood through veins and arteries.
It used to be considered that only urinary
troubles were to be traced to the kidneys,
but now modern science proves that nearly
aH constitutional diseases have their begin
ning in kidney trouble.
If you are sick you can make no mistake
by first doctoring your kidneys. The mild
and the extraordinary effect of Dr. Kilmer’s
Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy is
soon realized. It stands the highest for its
wonderful cures of the most distressing cases
and is sold on its merits
by all druggists in fifty-
