While Russian Officers
Look On.
Che Foo, May 25.—11:30 p. m
—Russian refugees who arrived
here today on a junk from Port
Dalny say that the Japanese bom

Russian officers who were on
Golden Hill declared, according
to the refugees, that during the
bombardment a Japanese battle
ship and a cruiser struck mines
and sank.
The war ships reported to have
been sunk off Port Arthur are the
battle ship Shikisima and the
armored cruiser Asama.
The story is not believed here
but the Russians who brought the
news i sist that it is true.

Southeastern Railroads Hold Meet
ing in St. Louis.
St. Louis, Mo., May 18, 1904.
A meeting was held at the South
ern Hotel, this city, to day, of the
Southeastern Railway Land and
Industrial Agents’ Association,
which includes in its membership
the Southern Railway, Atlantic
Coast Line, Seaboard Air Line,
Norfolk and Western, Central of
Georgia, Illinois Central, Louis
ville and Nashville, Nashville,
Chattanooga and St. Louis, Geor*.
gia Southern and Florida, Georgia
Railroad, Macon, Dublin and Sa
vannah Railroad, Florida East
Coast Railway, Frisco System.
Georgia, Florida and Alabama,
Atlanta and West Point, Wrights-
ville and Tennille, Mobile and
Ohio, Alabama Great Southern,
Tallulah Falls Railway, W. and
A. R R. The purposes of the
Association is to promote harmon
ious work for the development of
the states lying east of the Missis
sippi and south of the Ohio and
Potomac rivers, and take up mat
ters concerning immigration into
the southeast from northern states
and from Europe.
Nearly all of the railroads rep^
resented in this new association
have been actively engaged in im
migration and industrial work, and
most of them have regularly con
stituted departments lor handling
it. The result of this work in the
past has been very satisfactory and
had much to do with the recent
growth of the Southern states.
Many matters have arisen in con
nection with the handling of the
work which have shown that
co-operative efforts on the part
of the different railroads would
greatly assist the settlement of
farm lands in the South by home-
seekers, and that by keeping in

close touch with each other, the
railroads would be able to great
ly benefit the whole Southern
country.
It was shown that there are to
day in the Southeastern states
many million acres of land suited
for farming and for horticulture,
which are not now under cultiva
tion. As the:-e lands present the
best opportunities for the general
farmer, the cotton producer, the
grain raiser, the stock man, and
the fruit grower, it is deemed im
portant that even more active work
than ever be done in bringing be
fore homeseekers the advantages
of the South, especially in the way
of available lands. The Railroad
Land and Industrial Agents’ As
sociation also lias in mind the most
t •
active co-operation with the people
of different sections of the South
in the development of their respec
tive districts, and will lose no op
portunity to induce local people
to co-operate with them.
Reports were made to the As
sociation from different fields of
work along the lines represented,
and these reports were all of the
most favorable character regarding
the development of the Southeast
ern states, and the outlook in the
way of crops and in general pros
perity for the future is very bright.
From many districts were reported
increasing demands for farm lands,
the putting of new fields into cul
tivation, and of the gradual in
crease in the value of farm prop
erty. Outside of the reported in
crease in the cotton acreage in the
South for this year it was also
made evident that the South is to
have a very heavy increase in the
fruit yield. Outside of a few dis
tricts the fruit crop was reported
to he very large. The shipments
of strawberries from the more
southern districts this season have
been very much larger than ever
hef. le, and this will also he true
of the more northern districts
which are now in the midst of their
shipping season. The number of
peach and apple trees set out dur
ing the past year was very heavy
and a very large number of both
will bear fruit this summer and fall
for the first time.
The representatives of all rail
roads reaching the fruit districts
agreed that the increase in busL
ness from those districts in 1904
would amount to at least 30 per
cent, over any previous year.
There continues to be in all sec
tions of the South a steady inquiry
on the part of capitalists from
other sections of the country for
investments in timber lands and
factory properties, and local capi
tal is also going into industrial
interests more extensively than
theretofore. Money for invest
ment in industrial plants seems to
he plenty in all districts of the
South. From the mineral sections
increased developments were also
reported.
