ftr. W. H. Coker Dead.
Mr. W. H. Coker, who lived a
short distance below Dalton, died
rather suddenly Monday night.
He was in town Saturday on bus
iness, but has not been a well
man for the past year. About
12 months ago he was kicked on
the arm by a mule and has suf
fered some from that, but it prob
ably had nothing to do with his
death.

Mrs. Callie Holt Echols, died
early last Friday morning from an
attack of grip. He had been ill
only a short time. His funeral
was conducted from St. Marks
chapel early Saturday morning,
Rev. Dr. Hoke, the rector, offiei-
ting. Mrs. Echols has the tender
sympathy of the entire commu

Bought the Park.
Mr. Julian McCamy bought the
base ball park here last week. A
good series of games are now in
process of arrangement for the
remainder of the season, which
will be perfected as soon as the
college boys all get home.
A Busy Place.
It would prove a revelation to
many if they would go to the
telephone exchange sometime and
watch the operators. We often
grow impatient when we ask for a
connection and it is not given
immediately and forget that there
are 220 subscribers not to say
those who are not and make use
of the phones. Often when a
connection is asked for there are
perhaps fifty others wanting the
same service. So just be patient
a few moments and “Central” will
wait on you. Don’t forget there
are others.
Motion Court.
Judge A. W. Fite held the

Place.

one, ought to be promptly devised
and executed, if every cent neces
sary had to be raised by special
taxation. Other towns of no
more population or wealth or, I
may add, public spirit, have done
it, and the results in improved
educational work anti increased
material prosperity would fully
justify it. But, as a neat amount
ought to be realized from sale of
property not used by whatever
plan is adopted, to raise the whole
by special taxation would not be
necessary. And furthermore, I
am reliably informed that our
city fathers have, during the
past two years, by judicious
financiering, without increase of
taxes, paid off old, outstanding
obligations and met new special
demands for increased water sup
ply, etc., to the amount of about
3,500 per year. And from the
same reliable source I am in
formed that, without taxation, the
city fathers could, for the next
two or three years, appropriate
to the provision of better school
facilities, between $3,000 and
$4,000 per y«ar. The amount
then to be raised by special tax,
to secure equipment which will
not only meet our needs and do
justice to the children in our
homes, the rising generation, but
be a credit to our town and an in
ducement to the best class of im
migrants, would be pitiably small.
I am sure of some in prominent
positions who share with me the
opinions here expiessed. May
this be the beginning of a village
improvement that will tell to all
time. E. W. Way.

COL. J. W. BROWN
Has Resigned the Super! ntendency of
Crown Cotton Mill.
It will prove news to nearly all
that Col. J. W. Brown is to leave
Dalton.
He has resigned the superin
tendency of the Crown Cotton
Mill, and today he takes charge
of tha mill in Cartersville.
Mr. Brown has been with the
mill here for the past fifteen years
more, and has been a prime
factor in making it one of the best
known and best paying cotton
mills in the world. The Ameri
can Pad and Textile Company, of
Cartersville, made him a magnifi
cent offer and he accepted.
His family will move to Car
tersville about July 1st.
Mr. Brown requests The Citi
zen to tender his thanks to the
hundreds of friends him and his
family have made in Dalton for
their many social courtesies, and
to say it is a purely business rea
son why he leaves Dalton, and
even then he does so quite re
luctantly. The Citizen con»
gratulates the people of Carters
ville, and particularly the mill
down there. Dalton hates to give
this family up.
