A serious problem confronts the people at this season
when it is necessary to select a Christmas present for
every member of the family.
“THE JOY OF ANGELS.”
Luke, 15:10—“Even so, I say unto
you, there is joy in the presence of the
angels of God over one sinner that
repenteth.”
The three .parables of the “Lost
Sheep,” the “Lost Coin” and the “Lost
Son,” spoken by the Master to si
lence His critics and to emphasize
His plan of salvation, all close with
scenes of rejoicing. The good shep
herd rejoices over the restored lamb
to the fold. The housewife rejoices
over the discovery of the lost coin.
The father makes a festival occasion of
his son's return to the old home.
“Even so,” says Christ, “the angeis
in the presence of God rejoice over one
sinner that repenteth.". This is an
authoritative assertion, made by one,
who had reigned in the presence of
jibe angels, and knew the events that
awoke their harps and lyres to strains
of joy. '

gels of heaven have to do with the ad
ministration of God’s kingdom upon
the earth. But that they are deeply
interested in all God’s plans, and in
man’s welfare.and salvation is clearly
indicated. From creation down to the
ascension of the Son of Man they were
known visitors to the earth, and often
tent door and temple portico thrilled
with their . flute-like voices. They
leaned oyer the battlements of heaven
and shouted for joy when the earth
rounded the . cape of 1 obscurity and
burst into view. They hovered over

triumph. They now continue to strike
a new and sweeter chord as the news
is borne aloft of a wanderer’s return
to swell the number of ‘the triumphs
of redeeming grace.
Angels’ joy is a matter of interest
to mortals. If "we knew something of
their joy and the things that make
them happy, we would know some of
the joys of heaven that await the re
deemed. If we knew some of the
things that transpire on earth that give
them joy in heaven we could, even
while here, belong to the cnoir invisible
and contribute to the heavenly praise.
Here is a company of shouting an
gels, making triumphal music before
the throne of God. What’s this ex
citement about in heaven? Here upon
earth when we hear the great hurrah’s
we know some hero is returning from
a victorious, field. Some great leader
has won at the battle of ballots, or
some eloquent speech has touched the
chords of enthusiasm, patriotism or
pride. But such things do not inspire
angels to praise and to rejoice. They
look down and smile at our foibles and
pity our follies. Church bells ring
out and call men to worship; the song,
the story, the Word' and the Spirit kin
dle new life in a cheerless heart, wring
a new resolution from a wavering
mind, and ‘turn a soul toward God and
the eternal home, a!

nation. We expect them to raise a
gladsome song when some great Chris-
tion enterprise is launched, when some
magnificent temple is dedicated, when
some great book of Christian thought
is written, when some great power of
evil is broken, and possibly they do.
But here their greatest joy seems to
be when they look down upon earth
and behold one sinner on his knees,
one prodigal returning to the Father,
crying: “God be merciful to me a sin
ner.” Their joy witnesses the import
ance of such an event in the life of a
man. At creation they rejoiced; at
the incarnation they sang their praises,
and at the ascension they gave joyous
welcome to the King of Glory. And
now, along with these great achieve
ments of the power of God they seem
to rank the new birth of a soul. The
work of penitence is a sublime triumph
of grace. It awakens the sympathy of
the angels and touches the harp-
strings of the celestial choir to a sweet
er, happier strain.
The Grounds for This Joy.
This all seems strange to mortals
that: angels rejoice over one sinner
that repenteth. But. they- see with
clearer eyes and appreciate with a
greater wisdom the grandeur ,of sueh
a transaction in the, heart and life of
men. They know in the presence of
God the full value of a soul. With
our poor measurements we cannot es
timate the full value of the soul of a
man. We do not know its capacity
for goodness and greatness. We deal
with flesh; they deal with, spirit We
see the externals, the seeming; they
see the inward and the real. We use
the tape-line of time and the meas
ures of fftiiteness; they know no such
measurements. To them immortality
is a fact; with us it is a faith. . They
know no death. Eternity is real to
them; with us it is a hope. God and
heaven to them is a matter of sight;
to us they are a revelation. They be
long to infinitude; we are finite. With
them all is light; we only see through
a glass darkly.
They know the capacity of a soul.
It is the capacity of the soul fh^t
gives immortality its significance. They
know the soul’s capacity for know
ledge, for happiness, for suffering and
bitterness. Cramped and confined as
we are here in this world, we know
but little of the powers of our own
immortal being. With them there is
freedom' to roam the universe of
thought and explore the mysteries of
God; ability to measure the depths of
happiness and the capacity to appre
ciate the glories of the etemaL
They know the curse which sin
brings to a soul. They know the mind
this men are
silent, but angels clap their hands for
joy and take up their harps for a new
song to the Redeemer.
If we could see things as the angels
see them, and know what is worth
while as they know, our sources of
joy and objects of praise would be far
different. We would take up our harps
and strike many rusty strings that,
haveiifeW so. Jong without an object
to ifW^^Houch.
Wf notiM^ € St the plural number is
used to speaamg of these angels. There
must be fellowship and comradship
among these holy harpers. That which
incites joy to one incites joy in all.
They have the same objects of joy.
It is different with men. That which
appeals to one may not appeal to an
other. That which incites one to joy
may have no effect upon another. But
in this cheerful band there is perfect
harmony of feeling and temperament.
Their interests are identical; there is
a universal movement among them;
they rejoice in the same things. There
are no discords in heaven; there are
the harmonies of the redeemed.
We ore interested to know what it is
that gives joy to the angels and causes
rejoicings under the eye and with the
approval of God.
Joy Over One.
While we note that they who rejoice
are many, that over which they rejoice
is but one. An individual does not
seem to count for much in this world.
We are given to thinking of men in the
mass. The fall and death of one from
the ranks causes little comment. It
takes the destruction of a company to
make the world mark a disaster.
The sacrifice of one life is of small
importance in the accomplishments
and progress of the plans of men.
The salvation of one soul exictes no
joy and receives small comment among
men. A whole city must be moved and
multitudes must be brought into the
kingdom before, the church begins to
rejoice and to be glad. But the angels
rejoic'e over one. It was just one lost
sheep that the shepherd went over the
mountains to reclaim. It was just one
lost coin that the woman swept the
room to recover. It was just one "lost
son oyer whose .return an old father
rejoiced.
Ah, we are not known by the number
opposite our names in heaven. We are
not counted in the mass. Our indi-

we do not, the final consequences of
sin and the end of a sinful life. It is
not a matter of revelation with them,
but a matter of sight and knowledge,
for they are the cabinet ministers of
God, and know His mind.
Then they know the effect of repent
ance upon the destiny of the soul.
They know ao means a changed life
upon the earth, a career of usefulness
and service in the world, a home of
joy and a life of blessedness in heaven.
Knowing these things, to the angels
to the presence of God the penitent
sinner becomes an object of rejoicing;
and his humble cry for mercy the sig
nal to the heavenly choir to begin a
new, sweet song.
The Final Joy.
Each of these three parables repre
sent closing scenes of rejoicing. The
sheep is found and restored to the fold
and there is a glad shepherd. The coin
is recovered and there is a glad wo
man. The son is found and restored
to the home and there is a glad father.
Each of these three parables represent
the work of the Triune God in the
salvation of men. The Shepherd is the
Son who came to seek and save the
lost in the world. The woman, repre
sents the Holy Spirit in His work of
restoring the lost coin of the divine
nature in man. The Father represents
God in His love and readiness to re
ceive and restore His children to their
place in .His family. And the fact that
each representation closes with a
scene of rejoicing witnesses the final
triumph and- consummation of His plan
of redemption.
And the angelic rejoicings over one
triumph is hut the earnest of the final
joy in heaven that is yet to be. It is
but the prelude to the grand chorus,
which, in that great day of final vic
tory, when all are within the fold, and
all the ransomed and redeemed are
within the home, shall strike their
harps to the grand- “new song of Mo
ses and the Lamb.”
