A serious problem confronts the people at this season
when it is necessary to select a Christmas present for
every member of the family.
Jonas Barclay, Evangelist of Cherokee Presbytery.
“For the grace -fjtians. When we read the story of
eared, bringing + Antioch and of Ephesus, of Athens and
len, instructing + of Rome, and understand something
: that, denying + of the licentious pollution of the life
worldly lusts, + of the world in that day, we see that
berly and right- + what was called austere living, was
in this present -f simply “denying ungodliness and
or the blessed + worldly lusts.” So the world judges
ng of the glory + conscientious 'men today. But the men
and our Savior + who have attributed their salvation

might redeem + flint against the allurements of world-
iity, and purify + liness. And these are they who have

zealous of good + Christendom. Remember the people
+ of Geneva and of old Scotland, and
+ + + + our own Puritan fathers. The world

srything to grace, are we to achieve this “denying,”

“Bringing salvation.” Your good
works do not bring you salvation; nor
do your church forms, nor your own
feelings, but “By Grace are ye saved
through faith, and that not of your
selves, it is the gift of God, not of
works, lest any man should boast.”
John McNiell, the Scottish Spurgeon,
says that no one will ever receive sal
vation, except as a free gift “from the
hand with the hole of a nail in it.”
True grace is a free gift; but not a gift
in return for one received. Again
grace is not simply a kindness ren
dered to« one" because of his great
need. It is far. more than this. A
rich man lived in a stately mansion
on a splendid plantation. But he
was not satisfied, because he desired
a little farm lying at the corner of
his estate. Unable to induce his hum
ble neighbor, the owner, to sell him
the property, he endeavored, by per
sistent persecution, to compel the poor
man to relinquish his little home. He
would set the dogs upon his neigh
bor’s stock, and, in other ways, made
himself extremely disagreeable. At
last in despair the poor fellow gave
up and sold out to a stranger. Upon
taking possession, the new owner said,
“If he treats me as he has you, I will
kill him.” Of course the word was
soon carried to the man of wealth,
and he continued to pursue the same
course with the new arrival. One day
when the new owner’s stock came
home mangled and tom by his neigh
bor’s dogs, he prepared a nice quar
ter of beef, and sent it to his enemy
with his compliments. Again, after
another, outrage, he sent another
choice gift. Soon after, as he was
passing along the road, he heard his
name called, and turned to confront
his tormentor, who said, “I understand
that you said if. I treated you as I
did your predecessor, you were going
to kill me/’' The reply was, “Yes, I
said so.” “Well,” responded the rich
man, “I just wanted to say' you have
done it. You have killed your enemy,
I ask to be your friend.” Yes, “God
commendeth his love toward us, in that
while we were yet sinners, Christ died
for us.” And, when a man has lied
about you, and sought to injure you,

greatest incentives constantly placed
before his disciples by our Lord was
the fact of his second coming. He is
as a man gone into a far country.
While he is absent his* followers shall
have tribulation. Evil men shall wax
worse and worse. Suddenly, in the
twinkling of an eye, with ten thousand
of his saints, the King will come in
his glory, and “blessed will be that
servant whom his Lord when he com-
eth shall find watching.’’ It is evident
to the discerning reader of the epis
tles that the Apostles looked upon the
coming of their Lord as imminent.

young couple died, leaving a helpless
babe. A dear friend took upon him
self the care of the little one. Though
compelled to leave this country to live
abroad, he was regular in remitting
all funds necessary for the mainten

her benefactor, in which he said that
within a certain week he would re

Grace Inspires to Zealous Service, 1
“Zealous of good works.” Paul here
mentions two reasons for loving zeal
for service. First, “Who gave himself
for us.” When the young Moravian
nobleman, Zinzendorf, beheld, moving
ly depicted upon a master’s canvas, the
awful tragedy of Calvary, he read
this legend at the bottom of the paint
ing, “This have I done for thee, what
hast thou done for me?” Overpow
ered by the vision he there beheld of
the love of Christ for him, that love
constrained him. Lea%‘ing position and
friends and home, he carried the gos
pel of Christ into far heathen lands,
and became the originator and leader
of that consecrated band of Moravians,
who have wrought with such devoted
heroism in the forefront of foreign
mission heroes from that day . to this.
Sad to say, we are told that now,
on account of the inroads of a destruc-
le, that is grace in you.
to the ill-deserving.
“To all men.” When John saw Jesus
in the multitude, at Jordan, he cried,
“Behold the Lamb of God that taketh
away the sin of the world!” For
ever done away with was Jewish ex
clusiveness x hen. The Sun of Right
eousness . had appeared to shine out
upon all of the lost of every tribe and
nation. “Whosoever will may come.”
Grace Teaches Us How To Live.
“Instructing us . . . we. should live.”
Those who cavil, against a salvation by
grace, through faith alone say that,
if a man may be saved by faith alone,
he may then do what he pleases, and
still be saved. This is not peculiar to
our day. Men brought this objection
in Paul’s time, and he answered it
fully in the sixth chapter of Romans.,
Those who have experienced the grace
of God in-their -hearts, will not wish
to sin against him who died for them.
They will hate the things they once
loved. They will be found “Denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts.” Un
godliness signifies very much the same
thing as worldly lusts, and lust in the
New Testament means unlawful de
sire. It is that in which we prefer our
own desires to the will of God—the
self-life to the Christ-life. It is a
great thing for us when we once learn
when and where and how to say “no”
to such desires. Gibbon, who was not
particularly favorable to religion,
was compelled, as a historian, to ac
count for the marvelous spread of
early Christianity. And one among
the reasons he adduced for this was
