Ten-Cent Admission
Charged to Witness
Tooth-Pulling Show
An admission fee of 10 cents was
charged. to enter a local dental office
Thursday, when Lewis Preston, negro
janitor at the court house, had a tooth
extracted. Several paid the fee and
saw an uilusually interesting perform
ance.
Preston has frequently boasted of
having' reached 30 years of age without
knowing the slightest thing about pain.
During his entire lifetime, he states, he
has been in tip-top condition, not know
ing pain because he had never been on
speaking terms with it.
Thursday he didn’t have any pain,
but he did have a tooth, slightly decay
ed, which was annoying him. The sen
sation was not enough to be dignified
by the word “pain.” Then the court
house officials advised him to have the
tooth pulled. Preston didn’t have the
money; so the paid performance was
arranged.
With one man standing at the door,
no one was permitted to enter the of
fice without paying 10 cents. Preston,
the star of the performance, was grin
ning when he took his seat in the chair.
Then the dentist got busy—not too
hurriedly, mind you, but real busy.
Preston believes he took too much time
in trying not to dent the tooth, work
ing it out easily but in no decided haste.
Preston groaned—he'howled—he beg
ged; but the dentist, busy with his op
eration, worked steadily ownard.
When the tooth finally turned loose,
Preston bounded from the chair. An*
attempt was made to stop him; but he
wouldn’t be headed. Down the stairs
he went with the crowd in pursuit, but
he soon outdistanced his pursuers.
Preston now knows Pain when he
meets him in the big road.
