1910 the on-year changed from the

This occurred with all varieties.
A close relationship has been
found to exist between the spur
growth of a tree and fruitfulness or
rather, blossom bud formation. This
is true of trees of regularly bearing
varieties, off-year varieties, regular
trees of off-year varieties and off-
year trees of regular bearing va
rieties. This fact lends further
weight-to the view that irregular
bearing may be modified if the prop
er growth conditions can be created.
Under average condition the produc
tion of blossoms and the setting of
fruit greatly limits the fruit spur
growth in the fruiting year. The re
sult is a sort of biennial growth cy
cle that .occurs with a regularity
which has caused the off-year to be
considered generally as a fixed tree
character.
Varieties have different fruiting
habits. Most varieties of apple
trees fruit in a way that might be
prophesied from their spur growth
conditions. Different trees have un-

heavy crop of fruit. If this is true
it is only in an indirect way, as re
moval of the fruits any time after
they have become as 'much as a
half-inch in diameter seldom results
in the fruit spurs fruiting in suc
cessive years.
While overbearing is apparently
not the direct trouble, excess blos
soming may be said to be the cause,
since a blossoming spur on Wealthy
seldom blossoms two years in suc
cession, regardless of whether it
bears a fruit or not. Consequently,
if practically all of the spurs blos
som one season none of them fruit
the next.
While excessive blossoming is as
sociated with the off-year, it is not
the cause, as it is itself an effect
of nutrition. It is probably better
to say, then, that nutritional condi
tions which cause the formation of
extreme numbers of blossom buds
tend to give off-year bearing. *
Thinning does not result in reg
ular bearing. Overbearing having
been considered a prime factor in
the irregular fruiting of apples, it
seems a logical conclusion that thin
ning the fruit would tend to result
in regular bearing. Experiments
have repeatedly shown, however,
that commercial thinning of the
fruit does not have the effect ex
pected.
Since the period of blossom bud
formation was determined by Goff
the reason for the failure ,of the
thinning to induce successive bear
ing has been apparent. Practically
all apple blossom buds can be seen
to have differentiated by July 5 to
July 10 in this state. If the bud
has not changed to a blossom bud
by that time it remains as a so-call
ed leaf bud. It is clear, then, that
thinning the fruit has no effect, as it
ond, to J. P. Smith, and the third to
Ernest Stroup; the first truck would
go to Leonard & McGhee; the second,
to Chero.Cola Co., and the third to
Carter & Sons.
“As a whole, we think we had a
large and glorious Fourth, but had
we adhered strictly to the registration
rule, the races would have been very
few, and our visitors would have gone
home dissatisfied.
“At the next meeting of the Mer
chants association the matter will be
decided.

The judges have issued the follow
ing statement:
“Some criticism has been made of
the decision of the judges on decorated
automobiles and trucks. According to
the published rules, all contestants in
everything were supposed to register
prior to the event; so few registered,
that had the rule of registering been
strictly enforced, three-fourths of the
races would have been entirely out
out, and those that" were pulled off
would have only had one or two con
testants. 1
“As we were compelled to ignore the
registrotion rule as to the race en
trants, we saw no reason for not ignor
ing it as to the automobiles and
trucks.
“Only three automobiles and one
truck were registered; adhering
strictly to the registration rule, the
judges would give the first truck prize
to the Indian Refining Co.; the first
automobile prize to Ernest Stroup; the
second, to Thomas Horan, and the
third to Embry Horan.
“Disregarding the registration rule
in order to have more races, more con
testants, and placing the automobiles
and trucks on the same basis as the
races, the judges would give the first
automobile to H. B. Farrar; the sec-

Growers of apples have commohly
believed that there is no way to
strike a balance between a big crop
in the on year and a small crop in
the off-year. Observation of alter
nate bearing orchards for the last
five seasons, however, leads to the
suggestion that this habit is largely
due to nutritional conditions. At
least, there are five facts to suggest
the view that biennial bearing is
not a fixed habit of the trees.
