Of the Town of Kastman, adopt
ed By the Town Council of
Eastman, March 3d, 1873.
Be it ordained by the and Council
of the town of Eastman# that for the purpose
of raising a revenue, to meet the expenses of
the town for the present year, the taxes
hereafter named sh ill be levied on and col
lected and tlio following rules in relation to
making returns, shall be observed:
Ist. It shall be tlio duty of all persons own
ing or controling property subject to taxation
of any kind, to report either personally or by
‘agent, to the Clerk of Council, find return un
der oath the value of all such property, on or
before the first day of April next.
All who fail or refuse to make returns as
hereby required, or making returns and failing
to pay by the appointed time, shall be double
taxed.
The following shall be the rate of license :
Be it ordained, That from and after the Ist
day of April next, each dealer in spiritous
liquors of less than thirty (30) gallons, shall
pay per annum SSO 00 and fees.
Each dealer in spiritous liquors of thirty (30)
gallons and upward, shall pay $lO 00 and fees.
Each dealei in merchandise, each lawyer or
physician, or dentist and artist, shall pay per
annum $5 00.
Each billiard table and each vendue master
shall pay per annum $lO 00.
Each proprietor of steam mill shall pay per
annum $25 00.
Each circus company shall pay per day
$25 00.
Each slight-of-hand performance, or each
magician, and each showman of any other
name or style, shall pay such fee as the Mayor
may demand, except they perform for literary
or charitable purposes for the town or county.
Each public hotel shall pay per annum $lO 00.
Each printing press shall pay per
annum $5 00
Each blacksmith shop open for public
work shall pay per annum $5 00
Each tin shop shall pay per annum $5 00
Each wood work shop open for pub
lic work shall pay per annum $5 00
• Each manufacturer of boots or shoes
sh 11 pay per annum $5 00
The tax on real estate shall be one-half of
one per cent, on the sworn value thereof.
The tax on personal property shall be one
tentli of one per cent, on the sworn value
thereof, both real and personal tax to be col
lected on or before the Ist day ol November,
1873.
The tax on the gross sales of all goods,
wares, and merchandise, shall be one-tenth of
one per cent., to be paid quarterly, said quar
tern to end the last of March, June, September
and December, unless said day shall be the
Sabbath, when the day previous shall prevail.
There may he levied on all persons subject
to street duty fifteen days’ work per annum, or
a commutation tax of sixty-six and two-thirds
(66?) cents per day.

Ordinance Ist There shall dis

town of Eastman, except in or
in defense of personal property/ or by special
permit of the Mayor.
Ordinance 2d. No deadly Weapon shall, at
any time, be raised against the person of any
one, except in self-defense, with fin the cor
poration; but this Ordinance ahall not apply
to the Marshal or his Deputies in the execu
tion of their duties.
Ordinance 3 d. No person shall be allowed to
ride or drive animals within the corporation
at an unusual rate of speed, except in cases
of actual necessity.
Ordinance 4th. No person shall be permitted
to disturb the public peace by riotous con
duct, such as fighting, will vulgar
or profane language or any mJecent conduct
be allowed within the corporation.
Ordinance sih. There shall hfe no gambling
within the corporate lima
Ordinance G ih. All business. Houses within the
corporation shall be closed, and so remain
from 12 o’clock Saturday night until Sunday
night 12 o’clock, and during those hours
there shall be no business transactions
whatever, of any kind, name or species,
either in the way of buying, selling, exchang
ing, bartering, giving or delivering, except
in case of necessity.
Oi'dinance Ith. That all persons transplanting
trees on the streets or squares of the Town
of Eastman, whether public or private, shall
protect said tree by a box not less than six
(6) feet high before said street will be accept
ed or protected by the town authority, and
any person or persons who shall damage
any tree box, or be the prime cause of dam
age to any tree, whether shade or ornamental
within the corporate limitw of the town of
Eastman, thus protected, Sail be subject to
a fine of not less than two'dollars and fifty
cents, or more than twenty-five dollars for
each offense.
Ordinance Bth. Drunkenness on the Sabbath
day is strictly prohibited within the corpora
tioD, and any person or poisons found in a
state of intoxication on that day outside
their domicil, and within the corporate lim
its, shall be fined in a sum double that of a
similar offence on any other day than the
Sabbath. And the party furnishing on that
day by gift or otherwise, t}/e spirits by which
said drunkenness or intoxication is produ
ced, shall on conviction be fined not less
than ten dollars nor more than fifty dollars.
Ordinance 9 th For a violation of any ordi
nance of the town of Eastman, there shall
be a fine not less than two dollars and fifty
cents, nor more than fifty dollars, or impris
onment in accordance with the charter of
BCTtI town. - ?
Ordinance 10 th. Be it oritrmied, that the Mar
shall be furnished at the expense of the
Council, with a badge and club suitable for
his position.
Ordinance 1 1th. Be it ordained that suitable
posts be firmly planted iu the ground, at the
outside limits of the town, on all the princi
pal roads leading into and out of said town.
