THE EASTMAN TIMES.
WEDNESDAY, OCT. 24, 1873.
OUR AGENTS
Traveling Agent.— Captain J. D.
Mosely.
Loral Agents.— Capt. Eli McCro®**-
Bethany, Ga.; Hon John Mcßae, McVille Ga.;
Walter T. McArthur, Lumber City, Ga.;
Town ami County.
Divine Services
Will be held regularly twice each month in
the Court House, by the following ministers :
first Sunday : Rev. D. W. Bussey, of So. Ga.
Conference.
Baptist.— Rev. J. S. Thompson preaches
4th Sunday and Saturd iy before.
All irregular appointments will be given pub
licity through the Times, provided we are put
in possession of them ; and we will be under
many obligations to anyone who will inform
us of any such. To secure an insertion, they
must be handed in on Mondays.
Look out for the red X which denotes that
vour subscription is out or about to expire,
and that your paper will be promptly stopped
at the expiration of the time subscribed for.
We hope every one of our subscribers to whom
we thus give notice will promptly renew.
Come out to the prayer meeting to-night.
Cotton is daily rolling into town by the
wagon load. Now is the time to advertise
your business.
Our warehouse is now crowded with new
goods, which ate coming in to our enterprising
merchants, and they have hardly time to wait
on customers for unpacking and getting them
in position. Business is laziness.
As w'c passed Mcßae the other day we took
occasion to drop iu at the store of S. Mayer,
and were truly surprised to see the fine assort
ment of goods he has on hand. He proposes
to use the Times as a medium to let his friends
know all about them before long, and we re
serve further comment until then.
There will be a lecture delivered to-night at
the Academy, in the interest of the United
Fficuds of Temperance, and our citizens who
ore interested in this movement, will in all
probability be benefited by attending. We
bespeak for tbo lecturer a good audience and
the attention of our people.
We had the pleasure ot meeting in our
town on last Saturday, Mr. It. J. Head, who is
traveling in the interest of the house of Geo.
W. Head, cirgar manufacturer and tobacco
dealer, Macon, Ga. We are not acquainted
with the proprietor of this house, but venture
the assertion that if he be as clever as his
brother he will sell goods on fair terms to those
wishing to purchase in his line.
We spent two or three hours at McVille last
Saturday, and were pleased to note the evi
dences oi improvement. Messrs. McMillan &
Cos. have commenced the erection of a large
and commodious storehouse, and when finished
will put up the finest lot oi goods ever brought
to that market.
Professor Roberts, whom we mentioned in
last issue as lecturing in our town on Phre
nology, made quite a sensation before he left.
Ills last lecture, on Memory, was, to our mind,
the most interesting of the whole series, and
was well received by our people. He went
from here to Dublin, where ho proposed to
spout four or five days.
Apologetic. —On our editorial page will be
found a communication relative to the organi
zation of a Grange of the Patrons of Husband
ry at Towns Station, which should have ap
peared two weeks ago. By some oversight it
has not been published before, and we hope
the kind friend who forwarded us the interest
ing data will excuse the seeming neglect.
Public Temperance Meeting.— M. J. Cofer,
State Lecturer for the United Friends of Tem
perance, will deliver a public address in the
academy, Thursday Oct. 2d. Let everybody
attend. Mr. Cofer thoroughly understands
the question of organized Temperance effort,
and will explain what lead to the organization
ot the United Friends ot Temperance.
Avery serious stabbing affray occurred a few
miles above here on last Friday at a Justice’s
t ourt, between Messrs. D. T. Warren and
Benjamin Moore, The facts as we gathered
them, are these : The parties had a suit in
the court, upon the trial of which Warren was
defeated, and, becoming very much incensed,
he raised a difficulty and stabbed Moore very
seriously in two or three places. He was ar
rested aud brought to town that night, and on
Saturday waived commitment trial and gave
bond for his appearance at Superior Court.—
Occupying this position we do not feel justified
in expressing any opinion m the matter in ad
vance of the trial.
The prayer meeting last Sunday night was
one of the most interesting which it has ever
been our good lortune to enjoy. The exhorta
tion of our venerable friend and brother, Gen
eral Foster, was well-timed and to the point,
and we earnestly hope he succeeded in arous
ing some feeling among our people that may
cause them to take more interest in the matter
than they have done heretofore. Let the out
side world criticise and scoff, brethren, but do
your duty, and your whole duty, with an eye
single to the glory of God, remembering your
reward is not of earth.
We saw a young man on the train last
Thursday, lying back in the corner of the seat
*ith his boots off, eyes half closed, seemingly
in a semicomatose condition, reminding us
somewhat of a man who had been on a regu
lar jamboree for a week. We roused him up,
snd asked what was the matter. He said he
bad been to that party at Lumber City the
Bight before, and had seen such a nice time
bait he was utterly exhausted. He said there
"ere more nice girls than he had seen since
% woods were burnt, and “everything to eat,
/from a lady finger pea to a roast pig with a
pomegranite in his mouth.” The party was
i'en by Mr. Williams, on the occasion of his
ghter s birthday, and we are very sorry we
privileged to make one in the midst,
n t their kind invitation to attend.
Don t tail, business mon, to read the adver
tisement in our columns of 3/essrs. Guthman
& Haas, of Atlanta. It is conspicuous enough
to be seen. Remember, too, that when you
patronize such men as patronize your paper,
you are diiectly benefitting yourselves.
We had the pleasure of seeing in tow n for a
day or two during the past week, Mr. Louis B.
Knight, who is traveling in the interest of the
popular cigar and tobacco house of Messrs. H.
Myers & Brother, Savannah. Ga. Mr. Knight
is from Florida, and as our “Bob” used to
gobble up his hash in that vicinity, there ap
peared to be a kind of “fellow-feeling” which
made them wondrous kind toward each other.
His pleasant face and genial manner made him
and the house he represents many friends, and
we cun only say, long may he wave ; and may
the sun of some fair face light up the (K)night
of his present loneliness.
