AVo are so'riy to learn that sheep are being

to see all who can, avail themselves of these
services. Let the Church perform faithfully
her part and ‘do-operate with the Pastor, aud
she need have no fears. Work, work, work,
should be the watchword with all.
AVe regret to learn through a prominent citi
zen of this county, that a report has reached
our neighboring counties that negroes partici
pated in our late bounty meeting, aud voted
for delegates tP tile Macon Convention. AVe
mentiori this merely to say tlmt the report is
utterly untrue aud unfounded. If there is a
negro In the county that votes with the Dem
ocratic party We are not advised of it. He
certainly did not put in his appearance that
day; and, Of course, no negro belonging to
the Radical party would have been allowed a
vote. There was no negro even manifested a
desire to participate iu the meeting in any way
so far its we saw or heard. All parties are
agreed that the meeting was conducted with
the uturost fairness.
Mr G. AV. Braswell’s house was broken
open on Sunday, the 18 iust., and a few dollars
in silver stolen. Fie recovered $5.50 which he
thinks was about half the amount missing.
Also, oh the same day , the house of Mr. John

which was also recovered with Ml. Braswell’s
money, aud recognized, it being a noted little

again quite ill; has been prostrated for several
days. This wilt account jfor any short-corn

we ho'f.e, however, will not be keeuly felt by
our readers. For again has our friend, H. S.

Mr. H. J. Sapp picked 1,375 pounds of

which when gined weighed 496 pounds; and
broiigh him $50.22. Quite a handsome stnn

early as' the 21st day Of August. AV e move
that he be requested to give out dgricdltural

meeting next Saturday week. It was from this
patch that we received our first open boll.
“Oh the bells, thebebS, the beautiful bells.”
How forceetbhj we arfe impressed with this beau

A Monstrosity.
AVe learn from Mr. J. C. ltawliug; Clerk of
our Superior Court, that Dr, It. H. Fate car
ried to Hawkinsville a monstrosity in the way
of a child or children. It had two perfectly
formed heads and necks, two sets of o.rms and
legs, and one tody. The two faces were front
ing each other. It was dead. The parents
reside in Dooly count}'. Our informant gets
these facts from two of his brothers who were
iu Hafrk'msville and saw the child.
■ * 4*^—
We learn that our friend, James Mullin, of
Cbauncey, has recently built a fine store house
at that place, and upon its Completion, and
being filled with a large stock of goods, he
hoisted a large flag over it with the inscription:
“Gordon, Stephens, Cook.” AVe learn that
Air. M. regards Gen. Gordou, that battle
scarred Confederate soldier, as the greatest
man now iu Georgia. Upon this we are a
unit We all think General Gordon’s course
as a soldier, a private citizen, aud as a United
States Senator, has been most commendable
aud brilliant. He will be returned to the
Senate we hope, and believe, 4 w : tbout opposi
tion.
A Cutting Affray.
AVheil a few miles from town, as several
gentleiiieu were returning home from the
meeting, a! this place, on the 17th inst.,
a difficulty occurred befWe**n -Messrs:
John Taylor and Jcffin Jones, in which
they were bdth severely cut. Mr. William
Tailor, the father of John Taylor, and both
er-in-law of Jones, received also one or two
pretty severe cuts iu the hand, from the knife
in the hand of John Jones, while trying to
part them. AVe learn the wounds ure all get

Kastman Academy.
Frofessor G. Harrison resumed the ex
ercises of his school on Monday morning un
der the most favoroble auspices. There were
thirty-eight iu attendance and others are ex
pected. We are glad to note these siuns of
improvement, and shall be pleased to see our
excellent teacher most liberally patronized.
Let not the banner of education trail in the
dust, but raise it aloft and let all the children
of our community receive liberally of that in
gredient which is essential to the genuine
make-up of men aud women.
Dodge Agricultural Club.
Members and friends of the Club and of the
agricultural interests oi your county, don’t
tail to attend the meeting at the Court House,
in Eadltan, on the second Saturday ill next
month. Let every one come if possible; with
some clear, well defined idea how r to make
more com and more cotton on the same quan
tity of land, aud with less labor, aud let him
tell it to tiro Club. \ou know the old allege,
*' two heads is better than one if one is, Ac. ’’
Then come out and let us “reason together’
for a few hours. Old aud experienced farmers
owe it as a duty to give their experiments for
the benefit of the younger and less experienced
agriculturalists. Aiid then it is expected also
that our immediate representatives at the late
Stato Convention, will give us some interest
ing data as to the rapid strides in agriculture
in other parts of the Shite, together with other
matters and incidents connected w-ith their
late trip to Athens. The second Satur lay is

Mr. Johu Cravey, of Telfair county, called
on us Saturday. He reports the corn crop ir.
his settlement ate good, as it is possil le lor "tne
laud to make ft. Cotton lms rust in many
places and is considerably cut off. Fietd peas
liaVe also suffered materially from rust. Sugar
cane and sweet potatoes are excellent Mr.
Oravto says he has sweet potatoes now as large
ot huger then he has ever laised before iu his
life.
We learned also from Mr. C. that there is
much dissatisfaction in Telfair in reference to
the management of the Lite selection of dele
gates to the Congressional convention, iu that
county.
The dissatisfaction, it seems, grew of-.t of a
difference of opinion as to the majority of the
votes, viva voce, upon several important qnes
tious. which resulted, we are told, in the selec
tion of two sets of delegates. AA e regret this,
aud insist that the only safe aud perfectly 4sat
isfactorv way to -conduct these primary elec
tions, where there are two or more strongly
opposing elements, is by ballot; and for the
safety and nmty of the Democratic party, we
shall be glad to see all our counties adopt this
as t'Ae pltn.

TELFAIR MASS MEETING AT
COISYILLE.
AVe are in receipt ot a paper whick purports
to be the proceedings of the late njseling iu
Teltair to select delegates to the Macon con
vention, but which truly partakes more of the
nature of a communication. Owing ’to its
length and the illness of our foremai, we are
unable to get the whole of it in, but will take
what ol it wo can, aside from the comments.
It is a source of deep regret to us tt> see our
neighboring county of T> lfair iu such apparent
confusion. AVe take the following;
A large mass meeting of the Democratic cit
izens of Telfair county met a Cob Vibe on the
22d inst., in response to a call by Hon. A. J.
OamerSu, Chairman of the Executive Commit
tee ot the county-, for the purpose of electing
two or more delegates to attend the Democrat
ic convention to be held in Macon oa Septem
ber 4th, next, to nominate a candidate to rep
resent the 3d CongressioiTai District in the
next Congress. On motion of Hon. M. N.
Mcßae, Capt C C Smith took ths chair, ah
though a motion was previously, if not simul
taneously, made by Judge Alexander McDuffie
appointing Judge John J/cDorimtt to preside
over the meeting, and a large majority of the
meeting thought the latter gentleman had the
precedence to the appointment.
A committee, nominated by [the Chair, to
draft resolutions and busiuess, retired, and af
ter a briet consultation; ieported Thomas C.
Fletcher, M. N. J/cßae, O. C. Smith, Levi
Hart-ell, AV. F. Campbell aud John MoDermitt
as delegates to the J/acon convention—the
announcement of whose names by Jir. Ilobeit
S. Burton of the South Georgian, created much
dissatisfaction and accrimouious discussion—
it being well known that the three latter nam
ed gentlemen, although Cook men, could not
attend the convention, which would leave the
matter entirely in the bauds of Coi Kibbet’s
supporters. Great confusion prevailed, but a
move aud second for the adoption of the report,
the chairman declared it carried, and amid the
most vociferous cries c,f “no” three-fourths of
the voters presettt clamored loudly lor a
division and vote by ballot.
Daniel F. die BaC attempted to reconcile the
meeting in An elocpieutj defence of the claims
of Col. Kibbee, but he was promptly replied
to by llev. J. N. Bright, who spoke in favor of
Geu. Cook, as the popular choice of Tel
fair county. He offered as a substitute for the
report which had been presented, a resolution
to elect delegates by ballo;, and allow every
man present to vote according to his own per
sonal convictions ; but the chairman would
not received the motion, declaring that he was
out of order, and I hat it was only out ol def
erence to the gray hairs of the “man *of God’l
that he had allow ed him to speak at all. A\ T .
B. Thomas, Esq , assayed to speak during the
excitement, but he was understood tc be a
Kibbee man, and summarily hushed into si
lence.
The meeting was abruptly terminated by
the withdrawal of 142 enthusiastic supporters
of Gen. Cook, leaving Col. Kibbee’s friends—
-43 in number—to disperse without even mov
ing a vote of thanks to their chairman.
The supporters of Gen. Cook were iinmedr
a'cly called to order, and on motion of Judge
Alexander McDuffie, seconded by Mr. John S.
AValker. Judge John McDeVrnitt was unani
mously voted in the chair, and AVillLun Mc-
Lean, Esq., of Mcßae, was appointed to act
as Secretary. After the appointment of a
committee to Wait upon the Kibbee supporters
inviting their cceoperation in a foil election
of delegates to attend the convention, which
was respect!oiiy declined by them, several
speeches were made condemnatory of the un
fairness of the proceedings oa the part of CoL
Kibbee’s friends, who seemed determined to
carry the county by a Coup d'dat worse.than
ever disgraced the annals of French anarchy,
by surprising the popular vote uf Telfair,
which is undoubtedly in favor of the reaorni
rat ion of Gen. Cook as evidenced by the
•meeting here to-dav, by a very large majority.
After considerable discu-ssiou, participated iu
by \A r m. A. Clark, John S. Walker, Jacob
A. Clements, J. Q. Hammond, Isaac Roll ins,
J. D. AVyun and Daxid Robertson, the meet
ing, on motion of L. D. McMillan, Esq., ot
McA'ille. unanimously elected the following
gentlemen to attend the convention at Macon:
John McDermitt and Levi Harrell with John
D. AVyun, AV. F. Campbell, John Cravey and
Dr. D. J. Smith as alternates. On motion of
Johu S. Walker, seconded by Alexander Mc-
Duffie, the delegates were allowed to go uuiu
stneted; but they all personally pledged thera
wtflves to support the renomination of Gen.
Cook. After a vote of thanks, cordially ten
dered to the chairman, and politely acknowl
edged, the meeting adjourned.
