Dr. T. 11. Stewart was elected Or

day, at a special election.
Savannah leads all the Georgia cities
in the amount of contributions in aid
of the yellow fever sufferers.
The Rome Female College took a
prize at the Paris Exposition, in the
shape of a bronze medal for “ Scholars
Work.
Dr. Jamas F. Harrison of Virginia
has been elected to the chair of Nat
ural Sciences at Wesleyan Female Col
lege, Mucon.
Prof. W. 11. Waddell, of the Georgia
State University, died last week on
board a south bound train in the State
of Virginia.
Gen. L. J. Gartrel and Gen. John
B. Gordon will stump the fifth Con
gressional district in the interest of the
Democratic party.
Mr. John Davis of Baldwin comity
will realize three thousand bushels of
corn from sixty-five acres of river bot
tom, this season.
Albert Sidney Hinton, a nine year
old embryo farmer of Talbot county
picked six hundred and eighty pounds
of cotton List week.
Col. P. L Glover, a highly esteemed
and very prominent citizen of Twiggs
county, died at his residence in Juffor
souvifiS on the 19th inst.
Judge Hall of the Flint Circuit, in a
letter to S'ijne gentlemen of Griffin,
says lie will accept an election to the
Legislature from Spalding county.
The Darien paper is of the opinion
that fifty years hence Darien will be
just what she is now, unless she wakes
to a realization cf her advantages.
The first cargo of cotton shipped
from Savannah this season to a foreign
port was cleared last Saturday. It
consisted of 950 bales valued at $56,-
SGO, and was destined to Antwerp.
Dr. Sam Bard the mm who made
himself notorious and obnoxious in this
State, as a Radical newspaper man,
some years ago, died of yellow fever
in Baton Rouge-, a few days
since.

that the good country folks of Emanuel
have had to muzzle their dogs to keep
them from barking themselves to death
at candidates for county offices,
A wagon was crossing the little Ca
noochee river in Emanuel county, just
after a heavy rain was upset and SIOOO
worth of goods floated off on the raging
current. Most of the goods were re
covered but in a damaged condition.
The Milledgeville Union & Recorder
contains the following sensible hit :
“Georgia wants move sheep and few
er dogs. When sheep raising becomes
general, as it should, the dogs will
have had their day—and demagogues
can no longer rule the dog law out of
our statute/
On last Saturday morning, says the
Dublin Post. Mrs. Eveline R. McLoon,
was going up the gin-hoase steps, on
Mr. Hughes' Whitehead place, six
miles west of town, when, about half
way up, her foot slipped and she fell
forward, striking her side across a
step, from the effects of which fall she
died almost instantly.
The statues of Gens. R. E. T. J.
Jackson, T. R. R. Cobb and W. H. T.
Walker, have arrived, and they will
be placed in position on the Confeder
crate monument at Augusta at the
earliest day practicable. It is expect
ed that the monument will be unveiled
some time in November, and the cer
emonies will be very imposing.
The Telegraph says the Brown House
io Macon is making very rapid ad
vances in reconstrution. The walls
are all up, building roofed, the rooms
floored—several of them finished and
furnished, and the large force busby
engaged in finishing the remainder.—
The reconstructed building wi'l be a
more imposing, and a good deal more
convenient and better veutilate 1 house
than its predecessor.
