Ls Eastman Ever to Have a
Church. House?
This is a queftion that should deeply concern
good citizen of our town and communi¬
ty, The town has been in existence perhaps
ten or twelve years, a«d lias prospered. It
can boast of some magnificent buildings, but
when speaking of these in the presence ol
stranger, how insignificant do they all appear
when we are forced to acknowledge the fact
that we have not a single church edifice iu the
jOWU. True, we have three or four organized
churches here, but the question arises, ave
these churches prospering and wielding the
influence for good that they would if they had
a house or houses lor worship specially dedi¬
cated for that purpose? We think not. Then,
as a Christian people, as we claim to be, let us
move iu the matter aud aid the Methodist
church in pushing forward their building.
They have the lum ber and much of the other
material on the ground, and we hope ere long
to see the building in process of erection.

Our esteemed friend, Dr, Fisher, takes us to
task tor mistaking bis subject on the anniver¬
sary occasion of our Heading C31ub, and pens
us the following to which we gladly give a
place in our columns:
Editor Eastman. Times:—In your lust issue,
in your editorial describing the exercises on the
occasion of the anniversary of the Social Read¬
ing Club, you give me credit for making an
‘elaborate address on ‘Literature,’ ” when re¬
ally in my address I disclaimed this theme on
account of the vastness of the subject, and iu
a few minutes afterwards announced iny sub¬
ject to be “The Future ol Southern Literature.’’
In one sense it was about “Literature,” still
the public get a most iucorreet idea from your
version. I hope you will not think me exact¬
ing, but as you have mentioned it at all, I
would like to have it corrected. I attribute
the mistake to the fact th.it you assisted iu
rendering that elegant quartette, and I can
well imagine how a gentleman so pleasantly
engaged might miss the mark a little m an
account of so many speeches.
Yours, etc., Harris Fisher.
Eastman, Feb. 4, 1879.
An Astonishing Fact.
A large proportion of the Americau people
are dying from the effects ot Dyspepsia or dis¬
ordered liver. The result of these diseases
upon the masses of intelligent and valuable
people is most alarming, making life actually
a burden instead of a pleasant existence of en¬
joyment and usefulness as it ought to be.There
is no good reason for this, if you will only
throw aside prejudice and skepticism, take the
advice of Druggists and your friends, and try
one bottle of Green’s August Flower, your
speedy relief is certain. Millions of bottles of
this medicine have been given away to try its
virtues, with satisfactory results iu every case.
You can buy a sample bottle to try for 10 cts.
Three closes will relieve the worst case Posi
lively sold by all Druggists on the Western
Continent. feb!4yeo\v
Reduction in the Price ot Guano
Of the manufacturers of guano who increas
the price, the Hope is among the first to aban¬
don the extra charge and return to its old
price. We hope the Hope will be liberally
patronized by our planters. See Dr. Fisher’s
card.
Since w riting the above, Mr. J. \V. Griffin
informs us that they (McArthur & Griffin)
have been notified by telegraph and otherwise,
to sell quite a number ot the brands they rep¬
resent at the old prices. These signs are en
couraging to the farmer, and with such instruc¬
tions from the manufacturers, we may reason¬
ably expect that agents will lie relieved of the
surplus which has been accumulating for sev
era l days.
HYMENEAL.
TAIDER—MATERNE. —Married, January
31st, 1879, at the residence of the bride’s fa¬
ther, r, F. C. Materne, “Divinity Hill," East¬
man, Ga., by Win. McRae, Esq., Mb. Fred¬
erick Taiber of New York, and Miss Emma
Materne, formerly of Brooklyn, N, Y.
On the above occasion a few of the most in¬
timate friends of the happy couple were pres¬
ent to witness the ceremony. The bride had
come into our midst nearly a year ago from
Brooklyn, N. Y., with her mother, and has
many friends among her acquaintances here.
The groom had been in business in New York,
and had come South to spend the winter, and
being an old and very intimate friend of Mr.
Materne. took quarters at his residence. He
wooed and won one of our fairestyouug ladies,
and has carried her to his home. The occa¬
sion was, enlivened somewhat ity Major C. R.
Armstrong, who, in his usual happy humor,
gave the following impromptu sentiment:
“Here is health to the bride, and health to the
groom,
Their journey be pleasant and terminate so m;
Their home may they find as pleasant as before.
Surrounded with plenty and friends evermore
Tise bride wore in her hair a pin which had
been presented to the groom’s father by the
Prince of Hessia, at Rome, Italy, more than
50 years ago, as a token of esteem. The pin
was composed of one large amethyst set, sur¬
rounded by twelve smaller diamonds.
The happy couple took the 10:45 p. m. train
on Friday last for Savann ih, accompanied by
the bride’s mother, who goes to Brooklyn, N.
Y., to reside, and on Saturday set sail from
Savannah, in the elegant steamship City of
Macon, for- New York, whole Mr. Tuiber will j
resume the drug business.
Although our society loses an excellent mem¬
ber in the departure of the bride, our )oung
men will be glad to learn that her sister, Miss
Botha Materne, will remain in Eastman with
her father.
Dr. »J. AV*. Tucker.
The many friends of Dr. J. \V. Tucker in
this section will regret to learn of his anticipa¬
ted removal. Under date of the 4th inst.. he
writes:
“Circumstances which I do not control, and
the demands of domestic business affairs, will
compel mo to be fb^ent from the • State for a
time. It is with much reluctance and many
regrets that I sever my social and professional
relations vith so generous and appreciative a
public, but the occasion demands it—my peace
and prosperity require it.
“My absence, however, will not be perma¬
nent, and in taking leave of my immediate per¬
sonal friends and patrons on the eve of my
departure, I have adopted this method of
making my adieus, and expressing n y heart¬
felt thanks for the many kindnesses oi which
I have been the grateful recipient,
“With few exceptions my intercourse with
the people of this section, lias been marked bv
the kindliest feelings and evidences of confi¬
dence and esteem, and I now publicly ac¬
knowledge my debt of gratitude, and assure
my friends that (heir kindness and generosity
will be remembered wherever my lot may be
cast.
“I trust that my political, professional and
social career has been such as to merit the es¬
teem and confidence of all upright and fair
minded men. To my friends, and an intelli¬
gent and generous public, I appeal for sympa¬
thy and an impartial judgment.
“Again, I would reiterate my grateful thanks
to my friends and to the general public for
acts of kindness and substantial support. And
now, as I bid you all adieu for a time, permit
me to invoke Heaven’s choicest blessing upon
all, and to express the hope that prosperity
and peace may abide among you.
Very respectfully and truly,
J. VV. Tucker, M. D.
Horse Thief Captured.
Alfred Melvin, a white man from North J
Carolina, took a horse from the lot of Mr. P. j
S. Hargroves, oi this county, on Wednesday i
night of last week. Early Thursday morning !
the theft was discovered, and Messrs. P. S. j
and W. D. Hargroves took the track and '
over
took Melvin in the woods about five miles j
north of Eastman with the horse, where they
arrested him, and then returned to Eastman j
with their booty, A preliminary trial was
held before Win. McRae, esq., and the prison¬
er tailing to give the required bond of one
thousand dollars, was lodged iu jail to await
his trial before the Superior Court
It Ls said that the uuiortunate perpetrator of
this crime is mentally very weak, and his ac¬
tion iu reference to it would certainly sustain
this i lea. After taking the horse in the early
part of tli- night, as is supposed, he states that
he rode ofl bareback some half a mile, and
concluding that it was rather hard riding, he
returned to Mrs, Hargraves, the mother of P.
S. from whom he stole the horse, and took a
saddle. He then proceeded a short distance,
lay down in the woods and slept until nearly
day the next morning, when he awoke and
resumed his journey.
