Fla, on Tuesday morn¬ ing last, and has accepted the position of head clerk with Messrs. Harrell & Smith. George is an old Eastman boy, and his many friends here welcome him back with pleasure. —President Cleveland lias invi¬ ted the senior class of Wesleyan Female College, of Macon, to visit Washington some time during the present summer, and be the guests of the White House. Miss Fannie Hall, of Eastman, is n member of the class. We learn that it is prob¬ able that the in'MjUtion w ill be ac¬ cepted. —There seems to be a growing sentiment among the citizens of Eastman in favor of levying a tax sufficient to redeem the City Hall building this year. We under¬ stand that Mr. Lietch proposes to re-convey the property if all mon¬ eys he has paid out on the building is refunded. This is certainly a liberal offer, and one that slipuldbe accepted. The Town Council will tackle the question at their next regular meeting, and it is probable that an election will be ordered to settle the matter. A Horrible Accient tVifh 1’hobable Fatal Results. Mr. S. J. Smith, a hard work¬ ing farmer of this county, living about seven miles west of East¬ man, was perhaps fatally injured on the railroad of the Arnjskeag Lumber company last Friday af¬ ternoon. Mr. Smith lfful been to East¬ man, an^on starting home, ;is was hi.s custom, he boarded the train at the Amoskeag works. When the train reached the place where he had usually been getting off, Mr. Smith was standing on the rear trucks, and motioning the en¬ gineer to slow up, the train was soon almost at a standstill, Just at this time, Mr. Smith stepped off the rear end, and attempted to leave the track before the train, which was back¬ ing, could overtake him. He lial not taken more than one step however, before his foot came iu contact with a crosstie, and he fell, the trucks gassing over him. As soon as possible he was taken from under the cars, and carried to pj s jj 0rne SO me distance off. An investigation revealed the fact that q e } )a d sustained injuries fearful to CO ntemplate. Both arms were completely shattered, and his head wa6 terribly bruised, besides other injuries. Drs. Buchan, Latimer and Fish er were hastily summoned, and amputated the right arm. It was thought that the unfortunate man could not bear up under die opera tion of taking off the left arm, and that was deferred for the present, though there is absoluutely no hope of saving it. Air. Smith is in a very critical condition, and his death at any moment would not surprise his physicians. He has a wife and two children dependent upon him for support.
