I’ve not one button on ruy shirt, Or stocking to m> 1 1. I’ve more than I have t .rgaintd fj>, A lot of gloom and woe, J wish ttie tot would torn to cue About ii feet or so. The dearest thing J find la re o’. The staple thing la change, Tour nearest friend It misery, That friend is never strange. About the time joj rnaks a pile. And eil is snug and nice, L’p comes the Undertaker, And your meat la in the ice. There’s not s man will trust me, I’m completely out of hope, I envy all the onions that Are hanging on a rope. A child ol tribulation and An alien to joy. I miss the times I used to have When father was a boy. I never see a coffin, but I wish I was inside ; I never see a hearse, but I Would gladly take a ride. I’ll kick the bottom out the world To end the horrid show, And let She w hole menagei ie Exhibit down below. Current Heins and Jokes. Capt. Jack, of the Modoes, has killed Gen. Can by. The rumors of a Ministerial crisis in Spain is denied. The crisis in New York in money and stock has passed. The Government sold a million and a half of gold on the 17th. The Bank of England covers five acres of ground, and employs 000 clerks. A severe storm in Nebraska, on the 22d, lroze a large number of people. Napoleon the Third’s posthumous works will be published in London at an early day. The twelve thousand dentists in this coun try propose to form a I’rotective Union. Anew bridge is to erected over the Seine, at Paris, at a cost of over §600,000. William B. Donaldson, the oldest negro minstrel and clown in the United States, is dead. A letter says that England will spend half a million pounds eterling on the fortification of Halifax. Another veteran of the war of 1812, Mr. James Cox, of Knox county, died of old age last week. A son of the late President Tyler is wasting his time in lecturing on temperance to Cali fornians. One hundred thousand sovereigns were ta ken from the Bank of England on the 20th lor shipment to Now York. James Brooks rienced no relief by his visit io N •rf'dk His nourhhment is now taken by injection. A fearful revolu A is raying in Panama. Up to hit** T dates one man on each side had been killed. Senator Adeibert Ames has announced him self a candidate tor Governor of Mississippi, and for re-election to the Senate. John Anderson, of New York, has deeded to Professor Agassiz Peneke’s Island for the proposed Natural History School. Another item in the expenses of members of the last Congress is SIOO worth of snuff. Well, they were certainly quite up to it. Negro lodges of the Know Nothing order are forming in the West and South. Their motto is “No white man for office.” A riot has occurred at Frankfort, Kentucky, caused by the advance in the price of beer. Only twelve killed and foity wounded. Late advices confirm the victory over the Apaches, and all the details of the Modoc hor ror. An attack in force upon the Modocs is hourly expected. The government has ordered the officers in charge of Vancouver's arsenal to issue five hundred breech-loaders to the citizens of Ore gon for their defense against the Indians. Indiana points to one of its counties, con taining over a thousand genuine widows, as a proot that still greater facilities for divorce are needed. The Mayor cf Boston desires the appoint ment of a State commission to examine the subject of annexing contiguous territory to that city. Thirty-four thousand two hundred and forty loads of dirt and ashes were removed from New York last week at a cost of eighty-one thousand one hundred and sixty-one dollars. Luther M. Kennett, of Ohio, who represent ed St. Louis in Congress from 1855 to 1857 and was Mavor of that citv, died in Paris on the 13th. The State Department at Washington has instructed the Minister to Austria to inquire inta the reports of the purchase for restaurant stations and commissionerships to the Vienna Exposition. The Commissioner’s Court organized at Hal ifax for the investigation of the conduct of Capt Williams, master of the lost Atlantic sus pended the certificate of Capt. Williams as first master and master for two years. They ought to have suspended his body with a hemp rope. The Arkansas Legislature has been consid ering a memorial Congress asking that body to give the people of the State, ‘‘a good republican government, a good monarchy, or a good despotism.” They want a decent na tional government of some name. The Mansfield (111.) Preventive Association puts down the liquor trade by sending “ a committee of fifteen members, who march two abreast to the saloon indicated, and sit and knit. Odd as is this style of procession it is even so. Almost every town in Illinois holding elec tions in April has gone Democratic. The same may be said of Missouri. The Credit Mobilier and Congressional salary steal has evidently disgusted the great mass of honest voters. A gourmet of brilliant inventive powers has originated the charming idea of utilizing tad- , ooles, or “ pollvwogs,” as an article of table : luxury. He has tried them and finds them better than snails, shrimps, or any other such •• small deer" usually reckoned as luxuries. ! A Genua. ; -'.ldler s i a liquid for the ex- Uf'iimati.n of bugs—“ A:i.l how do you use it?" inquired the man alter he had bought it, •* Ketch to pug, unt drop von leetle drop into his mout." answered the peddler. “ The deuce you say !" exclaimed the purchaser. “ I could kill it in half that time by stamping on it.” “Yell," calmly said the German, “dat is a coot vay, too, to kill him.” Died, on the 7th ultimo. Mr. Jacob James, much respected by all who knew and dealt with him. Asa man he was amiable, as a hatter upright and moderate. His virtues were beyond all price, and his beaver hats were only twenty-four shilling each. He has left a widow to deplore his loss, and a large stock to be sold cheap for the benefit of his family. He was snatched to the other world in the prime of lile, and just as he had con cluded an extensive purchase of felt, which he got so cheap that the widow can supply hats at a more reasonable charge than any other house in town. His disconsolate family , will carry on the business with punctuality. TIE MONROE iIIUTISIL 1873 ) CALENDAR. (1873.
