Mr. Tw-.-t7.er w as on the blufl, last evening, call
ing ou a lady friend, and they were out in the
porch, discussing the works of the great authors,
when the young lady’s pet white rabbit, which
had escaped from Its cage, cam.e rushing around
the h.-u-e pursued by a big yell >w dog The young
lady screamed and Mr. Tweezer threw a rocking
chair at the do/, (Tightening him away, but
knocking over nigh’ tl wor pots and telescoping
the chair. Then the young lady implored Mr.
Tweezer to catch the rabbit and save it lrom the
horrid dogs.
And Mr. Twetz r commenced to catch the rab
bit. He empl -yed stratagem at ttrst. following
it around ihe back ol the house and whistling
gently, in true hunter's stylo, to arrest its atten
tion and cause it to stop. Then he made a grab
at it, when it paused to reflect under the goose
berry bushes. Mr. Tweez r grabbed not wisely
but too well, for the rabbit took advantage of his
plunging and snatching aiound among the bushes
to scurry over into a neighboring yard.
Twe> zer didn’t like that much, and he took oc
casion to say something derogatory to the charac
ter ol the rabbit as he extricated himself from the
thicket. Hut seeing the young lady near, he
emllt and a dun sort of a smile and got otl a dim sort
ol a joke about forty thorns in the hand being
worth a rabbit in the bush. Then he girded up
h-fe loins and resumed the catching ol the rabbit.
He h and left hi- hit amn g the fruitful shrubs, and
as he vaulted over H e fence a portion of his coat
tail leruaincd on a a protubing nail. But Mr.
Tweezer meant business. And so did the rabbit.
They coursed across the yard, then out in the
street, then down two blocks, then into another
yard, and here a man came out and asked Twee
zer what in all the thirty-six he was trying to do.
Tweezer asked if he didn’t have sense enough to
see himself. man smiled.
Ere this interview took place, it might be stated
that 'he rabbit had gone under the cow stable.
Tweezer crawled under and chased it out. Any
body might know that by the look of his white
duck clothes. When be came out the chase began
anew The rabbit w: s fair, aid w.-iited lor him
Just on II e other s’idj of a picket fence. This
time the i iii-uit ltd down the middle ol thestreet,
and spectators looked on and clasped hands with
enthusiasm. Tweezer’s blood was up end he re
solved to catch the rabbit or die in the attempt.
He looked very much as though he would have a
chance to die in the attempt. So it appeared un
til a dog darted out and caught the rabbit. When
Mr. Tweezer came up and received the prey from
the jaws of its captor, he found to his inexpressi
ble sorrow lhat the animal had not been killed.
Bo lie bore It back anrt restored it, unharmed, to
the loving arms which awaited it at home, and in
the midst of caresses which were lavished on the
return of the bcautiiul pet, poor Tweezer was for
gotten.—Peoria Review.
Four telegraphic cables now cross the Atlantic,
three ol them connecting Ireland with Newfound
land, and the fourth running from Massachusetts,
by way of the Island of St. Pierre to France. Toe
widest of the English cables has been lor some
time silent, and the Orest Eastern is about to
pick it up, so that it may be repaired. The pre
cariousness of the cable connection across the
ocean Is shown by the fact tLat at some time each
one of the three original cables has bee j silent,
and that on one occasion quite recently but one
of them was in working order. The more cables
there are the less is the probability of all of them
being interrupted at the same timethe smaller the
chance that communication may be entirely cut
ott. due experience in the business has demon
strated, however, that cceu'.i c hies wiar out, aud
which may remit in a add-cn stoppage of signals
ut any time. The picking up ot tu • earliest laid
cable (that oi 1865) by the tlrc.it Eastern will give
valuable information as to the efiec’s the elements
have had on it during the eight years it has lain
at the bottom ol the sea. The huge steamer
which lias Just completed the fourth trans-Atlan
tic cable was also engaged in the laying of its
predecessors, in 1805, 1860 aud 186#. In her pres
ent expedition she has been accompanied by the
steamers Hibernia, Edinburgh and Robert Lowe,
Admiral Sherrard Osborne having organized and
arranged the squadron, whilst Captain Halpiu, of
the Great Eastern, was eommander-in-cheif during
the work. The new cable is nearly- nineteen hun
dred miles long, and it was laid north of the cable
ot 1565, not approaching it nearer than thirty
miles, excepting at the shore ends. In a few days
a short double liue of cable is to be laid between
Newfoundland and Cape Breton to facil'tate com
munication with the American land lines.
A I'khhibls Revenge.—An lowa editor last
week to keep up with the style, ran a *ay with
another man’s wife. He did not get off so easi
ly, however, as he imagined he would. The man
followed him and overtook the traaut pair. The
editor gut behind the woman, and prepared to
sell his life* as dearly a; p-ssiMe. fie w„s uncer
tain as to whether the outraged husband would
shoot or murder him with a carving kuite. He
Stood thete like the boy on the burning deck,
aud caimly awaited the result. The outraged
husband came np within about two Je. t ot the
editor and said : “ Cuss your impudence. I
w tot you to stop my paper.” That was all. The
editor recovered himself and said he would have
the matter attended toatoncs. During all the
tryiug scene the woman stuck to the editor like
a sandbugto a girl's stoekiug. Some people get
mad and stop their paper for almost nothing.
A \ brmont lawyer, in arguing a case one day
before the late Judge Mattocks, who, with the
°VI os-.r.g counsel, had sat up over a game of
whist the proceeding evening, chanced to assert
of his antagonist, “The gentleman has trumped
his ovta trick by the citation.” The knowing ones
were net a little amused at the tone ot assumed
severity with which the Judge interrupted him.
“ion wili be good enough louse language that
the court can understand.”
An Alabama lawyer, defending a murder case
spoke for nineteen consecutive hours, and the ju
ry brought In a vetdict of guilty in seven min

for the torture they had endured. Loquacious
attorneys should limit their tongue* before they
reach the limit of hnmsu patience.
