Now eopposethe poor fellows whole crop is taken to settle liens against him, as is the case in a vast majority ol instances this season, what is robe the fate of every body else he owes? Of course they get nothing. And the school teacher and ev erybody else who have worked for the lartner, and depend upon their labor for a living, as we all do, tor all are poor, must be brought to sufferance. No man can live, when other men’s claims are al ways preferred to hia. This lien law ,wir, i6 a moat dreadful enemy to every kind ot avocation except the favored few. Thousands have labored faithlully for the farmer but cannot get a dollar for his services, because the lordly giant, with this special prerogative ha* taken all. With this license which a short-sighted Legislature gave him, he runs one haDd iuto the pockets of the farmers, ou whom men of all avo cations depend, and drags out the last dime, if necessary to settle his claims, wailst with the oth er be waive* a haughty defiance to all of the man’s other creditors. Is it just. Is it right ? Diflerent bodies of men have memoral'*ed the Legislature to wipe the foul blot from the Statute Becks, but stili it remains a disgrace to the intel ligence and honor of the people. Surely this l cry ing evil will not be permitted to remain much longer. It makes a few ilch upon the ruin of everybody else. It demoralizes larmer* and drives them from their ‘arms, upon the culture of which everything depend". In my opinion this lien law and Home stead bills are great enemies to religion and tbe church ; and has done more to corrupt the peo ple, the foimer by driving, the latter by enticing, than all of the art. The anitas* creature has suf fered from one portion of the continent to thd other with epizootic. Not one horse or mule. I suppose, escaped this plague. The human family have been visited with many afflictions; in some localities with small pox, in ctners with yellow fever, to u greater and more destructive ixtcnt than was ever known before. The last, but not least in its wida spread, is what is called the panic. Every ration on earth has felt its effects, and lo some extent every family. The question is, What is the cause of this panic? A reasonable answer ia, Extravagant and wild expenditures of monay generally. Such as Jay Cook's buildiDg rail roads through a wilderness ot thousands ot miles, where there was no man to ride and no produce of any kind to transport Governments and incorpora tions spending money extravagantly and going in debt beyond their ability to pay. The result is thet thisikied of engineering has down ot its own weight, and men are brought to reflect and look around for a remedy. It is at band: economy and perseverance. Our owu town authorities are not entirely free from this extravagance. I can’t see why men Should be censured when they go to them in kind ness and ask them tj let the people who are interested kuow what they are doing, and they ob stinately decline to do it. After this kind of treat ment we then sought the courts for protection; 'hey employed council who takes the occasion, in a speech, to denounce every man who is seek ing protection through the courts as not being worthy ot citiunship, and as enemies to bis couutrv witb a long tirde of personal abuse.
