D—n Uli> Gill.—We clip me following Inci
dent of ‘-Tom Johnson, 1 ' of Kentucky, from the
Kentucky Yeoman:
“ Once npon a time, several decades ago, that
celebrated wag, boon companion and caustic wit,
wav making his temporary nome at a public house
or hotel in a Kentucky country towD, kept by a
well known, middle aged Boniface, numod GilL
Owing to Tom’s habits of di.-eipation and prover
bial delinquency in paying his board bills, he was
not at all t'rncs treated by Gill with that respect
whicu be (Tom) deemed was bis due. For ex
ample, landlord Gill was particularly remiss in
Laving Tom invited to bi3 meals at the proper
time along withtberest of his numerous boarders.
B -irg called v< ry late to dinner one day, when all
the other gentlemen were nearly through with the
meal, he surpiised the assembled guests by de
claring his intention to invoke a blessing before
partaking of the depleted dishes scattered before
him—such being, he 6aid, ‘ the habit of his life,
and of all true Christian men.” With an appear
unce of solemnity and devoutness tew conld so
readily assume, he raised both hands, and with
eyes half closed, electrified the guests and the
landlord especially, with the following astound
ing ‘ Grace Before Meat
‘ O Thou ! who blessed’st the loaves and fishes,
Look down upon these empty dishes;
With that same power these dishes till—
Bless all these guests, but —damn Old QUIP
“Old Gill’was good natured enough to ‘ac
knowledge the corn ’ and laugh with the rest;
hut, ever alter that he took particular pains to
have Tom ut the table as soon as any oi the rest
o! his boarders—a politeness which the wag ap
preciated by increased punctuality in paying his
weekly bills.
“ On another occasion being at a tavern table in
another county, where the meats were always ex
ceedingly fat and greasy, and the milk excep
tiun'illy lean and biuojohulsh, with the same pre
liminary formalities, Tom gave utterance to an
other appropriate ‘grace’ vvhleh, though not so
correctly rhymed and metred as the first, equally
answered the purpose of convulsing the persecuted
boarders, and properly satirizing the stingy land
lord ns follows:
“ Here art thou O, fat!
Where art thou O, lean ?
I swear by Jove and my old hat.
This milk has lost its cream !”
Aekiai. Navigation.— Editor Kentucky People:
Since the pubication of my card relating to my
invention of a “ Flying Machine,’' variona inqui
ries have been made regarding the nature of my
invention, the motive power, and mode of appli
cations, by the cuiious and inquisitive, and not
deeming them desirous of entering into the enter
prise in good luitb, I have hesitated to communi
cate my plans. But I now say that if any capital
ist will authorize any person cr persons competent
to Investigate the theory, I will let them know all
about It; and If they are not satisfied of its feasibil
ity and its perfect adaption to the purpose intended
and claimed for it, they can abandon it under the
Injunction ol secrecy, and that will be an end of
the engagement.
I make this proposition in the firm belief, that
I can do all I claimed for my invention in my
former publication—that is, navigate the air, carry
passengers and the mails, have perfect control
of the machine, ascend and descend or change
direction at will, thus solving the long sought
problem of navigating ui peifeet safety the aerial
legions. Editors friendly to the encouragement
o! the enterprise will please give notice by an in
sertion of this or by edit Glial remarks, and mnch
oblige the inventor. NATHAN STONE.
