We learn from the Columbus Enquirer that

An Atlanta correspondent of the Savannah

that under no circumstances would become a

now out of political life, and did not expect ov

Whiskey, says the Griffin News, is begin
ning to tloat. around loosely and we can hear
it talking pretty loud on the streets daily. Itis
not that disturbing kind of a noise, but sort of
a genial how-come-you-so-good-sort-of-a-feel
ing-kind. Work hardball the year and spend a
good deal of it killing benzine in the fall is a
good way to get rich.

Rev. W. II- Mclntosh, I). I)., lias resigned
as pastor of the First Baptist church Macon.
We learn that he has been appointed to and
will accept the position of agent of the Domes
tic Mission Iloaul of the Southern Baptist Con
vention, recently tilled by Dr. Sumner. The
Macon church sustains a great loss in having
to give up Dr. Mclntosh, and the Board have
selected a man eminently fitted for the posi
tion, and who, we are led to believe will give
universal satisfaction.
Thompson Am an, Assistant Comptroller
General of the State under lion. Madison Bell,
died at his home, in Banks county, the 17th
ins!., An “ Memoriam" in the Constitution
says of him; “He was an honest man a gen

most by those who knew him best,” From
what we knew of him, wo believe this is a de
served tribute to Air. Allan.

Last Saturday morning Air. Russ Barrel
concluded lie would kindle his tire with gun
powder So lie got out liis powder flask, which
tyn tail up to tUv Lop, and poured out some on
a piece of cotton and hot ashes. Of course
the cotton and powder burned, it was quick
powder, the very quickest kind. The whole
flask full caught. The last thing Air. Barrel
remembers was a big flash. Be thinks now
that it he can get the skin to grow back on one
Ode of his face and can get two or three fingers
that he used to have he will never kindle anoth

A Big Corn Crop.
We congratulate the people upon the pros
per! for the largest eoru crop ever gathered.
This will necessarily make breadstuff's cheap
and abundant for another year, and should be
the occasion of a general thanksgiving to the
“ Giver of every good gift" for this wonderful
manifestation of His goodness.
The report to the Department of Agriculture
at Washington says of the corn crop, could it
be thoroughly ripened its aggregate would ex
ceed any previous crop, and the yield per acre
• would be one of the best, notwithstanding the
losses by overflow of bottoms and the satura
tion of heavy , flat soils—such losses proving
less than the usual damages bv drought and in
sects, while the rains have greatly bcnelitted
the crop on drier and higher soils. Nearly ev
erywhere corn is later in maturing by from
one to two weeks. General high condition is
still maintained, the average being 1 per cent,
higher than in August.
The State averages are. for Maine, 105; Now
llumpshira, 1(H); Vermont, 08; Massachusetts,
100; Connecticut, 108; New York, 09; New
Jersey, lie; Pennsylvania, 108; Delaware,loo;
Maryland, 100; Virginia, 112; North Carolina*
104; South Carolina. 87; Georgia, 00; Florida
8J; Alabama. Ill; Mississippi, 110; Louisiana
8o : Texas, 80 ; Arkansas, 103; Tennessee, lit;
West Virginia, 107 ; Kentucky, 103; Ohio, 07;
Michigan, 101 ; Indiana, 83; Illinois. 05 , Wis
consin, 00; Minnesota. 72 ; lowa, 92; Missouri
111; Kansas, 100; Nebraska, 03; California,
Wo; Oregon, 100.
1 he average of Oeorgia is, according to this
report, 00. The Commissioner of Agriculture
of the State of.Georgia, in his report for Sep
tember, estimates the corn crop of Georgia at
85 per cent of last year’s \ ield.
1 hose two reports come very near agreeing
Our own State, owing to drouth, will not make
a full corn crop, hut all of the western and
northwestern will give a yield largely in ex
c(..-s of any crop gathered for main years past.
Ot course it will he necessary for the farmers
of Georgia to purchase some com, hut the su
per abundance of the cereal in the West will
make the price cheaper than for years, we
trut North Georgia did not sutler from
drought as did middle and southwestern Geor
gia. hitfield, Catoosa and Murray counties
made each 50 der cent, more com during the
present year than was gathered hist year. And
the same is true of nearly all the counties of
north Georgia. It is therefore probable that
the northern section of the State will be able
to spare a good large portion of the corn that
w 111 be required for the low< r half, thus keep
ing the money withiu the confines of the State
instead of sending it off to enrich the West. If
we had had favorable seasons Georgia would
have produced a sufficiency of corn to meet
hei own wants. As it is two millions bushels
will he required. Georgia > coming nearer
ami nearer even year to he a sell-support in *
State. We hope to >ee next year a crop pn>
dneed sufficient to meet the wants of the en
tire people without the purchase of a bushel
from the west.
