Prospects for Fall ana Winter.
The Baltimore Manufacturer!-'
Record publishes letters from lead
ing machinery manufacturers all
over the country as to busme-s. an I
the |ros]K'Cts tor the fail and winter.
Fifty seven write that there i- a de
eided improvement in business, with
good prospects for more prosperous
times— some reporting orders alien '<
for several months, some say that
their works are running to lull ca
pacity, and one that business is bet
ter titan for ten years, while only
one reports a fall ini; off in trade.
Thirty-eight report having increased
their force since January 3. and of
these* seven have doubled the num
ber of men, while tin* others lut\e
increased from twenty to thirty
perty percent. Of the entire num
ber only one made a decrease.
Thirlv report an increase in wages,
running from five to twenty-five per
cent, the ireiteral average being i
about ten per cent. \\ itli some lew
exceptions, the writers say the price
>t maniifactlirei goods has not yet
advanced in proportion to the gen
eral increase in wages.— Fx.

Rev. Dr. D. E. Butler.
Tbo Columbus Enquirer Sun, in an
editorial on the death of Rev. D. K.
Butler D. I). which occurred at Mad
ison (Ja. on the lit>, instant concludes
with the following paragraph :
Dr. Butler’s death seems to have
been u i *xpected by’ the public, and
while it crapes the country w'th sor
row, it is another mournful reminder
that amid the bustle and business of
life we are all hurrying on to the
cemetery’ and the judgement day and
the world to come. His life, like ev
erybody’s, was nothing but a dream,
but lie was waked up to the realities
which eye never saw and ear never
heard. While Baptists everywhere
are mourning David E. Butler, let
them remember that his feet are not
ceased from walking, but that they’
have pressed the sapphire floors of
the only city that continues, and that
lie has registered his citizenship there.
Bet them remember that his eye, that
flashed from so many pulpits in Geor
gia, is not closed and filmy and
sightless, but that it is gazing upon
“tiie King in His beauty, and the
land that is very far off.”
A Blind and Deaf Woman.
Miss Minnie Wnllaee, of Atlanta,
lost her hearing, her sight and sense
of taste. Sores covered her body
and I'inhs Her joints were swollen
and painful, her limbs paralyzed,
appetite lost, and she was eking out
a miserable life. Six bottles of B. B.
B. restored her sight and hearing,
relieved all aches and pains, added
flesh and strength and she is now a
•well woman. Write to her.

Let Vanilla Alone.
It is possible that many cases of
ice cream poisoning are caused by
the vaniila extract used for flavor
ing. This is the theory advanced
In*'Dr. Morrow in the Medical Rec
ord, and he supports it quite plausi
bly.
More than thirty years ago eases
of poisoning from eating vaniba ices
were reported in Europe, and the
trouble was found to be in an oil se
creted by the vanilla pods.
To be on the safe side the ice
cream eaters would do well to let va
nilla alone. Even then there is
some danger, as milk under certain
conditions generates a poison ot its
own. —Ex.

The Time of Beauty.
Savs a recent writer: “Woman
joins in an insurrection against the
universe, when she acts as thoug i
her life were all involved r n those
Jew year s covered by tier personal
heautv, which is only* one <>f the
gilt- of Heaven to the daughters of
earth. That form of worth may
fade a wav into beauty of mind and
heart, hut it should he as dawn pas
ses up into morning, and not a>
evening passes down into night.
Woman is fully authorized by na
ture to make her fiftieth year as'no
ble as her sixteenth : her learning,
her conservation, her taste, her
matchless purity, her infinite friend
ship. which has not enough words
to conquer, being more than able to
atone lor the tints that may have
faded from the check. V* hen phy
sical beauty is made the aim of be
ing. life is limited to about twenty
years. Thus are fifty years left
without an adequate reason of be
ing, except that a part of the period
was the approach to beauty, the
other part retreat, full of humiliu
lion.”
The church was horn in prayer
meeting, as we learn from the firs
chapter of Acts, and in prayer meet
ing its life was nourished. The reg
ular gatherings of the early chris
talns, of which we have glimpses in
1 (air. and in Pliny s letter to Trajan,
resembled more nearly our prayer
meetings than our Sunday services
The experiece of the church in all
ages demonstrates its value. Yet
“the usual prayer-meeting (as we
sometimes unwisely designate it
from the pulpit) often runs in deep
est ruts, destitute of attractiveness,
efficiency or spiritual power.
No matter how dull a prayer-meet
ing may be we have never heard a
man express regret at having been
to one. Incoming away from the
dullest of all prayer-meetings one
feels a serene satisfaction that he en
joys at no other time. Fidelity to
the prayer-meeting has rewards of
its own—different from all others,
and in some respects, better. Has
not every duty rewards peculiar to
itself and different from all others?
It so, what a splendid variety’ of re
wards we have before us.— Ex.
