U? IN A BALLOON.
Sensations of an Aeronaut When More
Than a Mile High.
September Century.
.An nearly a* could be judged. I
was more than a mile high, and all
pounds from the earth had ceased,
't here, was a death like .silence which
was simply awful. It seemed to my
overstrained nerves to ferebode dis
aster. The ticking of my watch in
my pocket sounded like a trip-ham
mer. 1 could feel the blood as it
shot through the veins of my head
and arms, My straw hat and the
willow car snapped and cracked, be
ing contracted by the evaporation of
the moisture in them and by the
fast-cooling temperature. 1 was
compelled to breathe a little (pucker
than usual on account of the rarity
of the atmosphere. I became sensi
ble of a loud, monotonous bum in
my ears, pitched about on middle C
of the piano, which seemed to bore
into my head from each side, meet
ing in the centre with a pop; then
lor an instant my head would he
clear, when the same experience
would he repeated. By throwing
out small pieces of tissue paper I saw
that the balloon was still rapidly as
cending. While debating with my
self as to the ad visibility of pulling
the valve rope (1 was afraid to touch
it for fear it would break) and dis
charging some gas, the earth was
lost sight of, and the conviction was
forced upon me that this must be the
clouds! it made me dizzy to think
of it. Above, below and upon all
hides was a dense, damp, chill}' log.
rpon looking closer, large drops of
rain could he seen, silently falling
down out of sight into wluit seemed
bottomless space.
1 was alone, a mile from the earth,
in the midst of a ram-cloud and the
silence of the grave. Moreover, i
had sole charge of the balloon ; if it
bad not been for this fact I could
have taken a little comfort, as 1 had
no confidence in my ability to man
age it. A rain-storm upon earth is
accompanied by noise; the patter of
the ram upon the houses, trees and
walks always attends the storm,
while here, although the drops were
large, they could not be heard fall
ing upon the balloon or its belong
ings. Silence reigned supreme. The
quiet spoken of by Dr. Kane and
other Arctic explorers as existing in
the northern regions was a hubbub
besides this place. More tissue pa
per was thrown out; the apparatus
was slowly descending, being
brought down by the weight of rain
upon it. Soon the earth was in view.
How peaceful and quiet it looked!
Immediately the whistling of rail
road trains could be beard.
.Now mountains could bo distin
guished from valleys, and the call
ing of frightened crowds and the
shouting ol men could be heard. 1
passed immediately over Tallcott
mountain tower, where there were
some 200 people enjoying the day.
I could plainly hear one ot them
blowing a horn. As the balloon slow
ly descended men could be seen run
ning from all sides toward the place
of landing. Now the hum of insects
could be heard, and the grapnel,
with a hundred feet of rope attached,
was thrown out; it soon struck the
ground, and dragged lazily along
through the turf and over the stones
without getting a secure hold 1
approached a man weighing 300
pounds, who was sitting on a stone
wall all out of breath from running.
Without the formality of an intro
duction 1 asked him to “catch on to
that anchor and stop the business."
With a woe begone look upon his
honest face and an ominous shake
ot the head he replied : “It’s no vise,
young fellow ; 1 can’t work my bel
lows.” But as the rope twitched
along near him he fell upon it, and
in v journey was ended.
Miracuous Escape.
W. W. J’ecd, druggist, of Win
chester, Ind., writes: “Olio of my
customers. Mrs. Louisa Pike, Barto
nia Randolph Cos., Ind., was a long
sufferer with consumption, and was
given up to die by her physicians.
Biie heard of Dr. King's Mew Dis
covery for consumption, and began
buying it of me. In six months’
time she walked to this city a dis
tance of six miles, and is now so
much improved she has quit using
it. She feels she owes her life to it."

Thk Times-Democrat- says that
‘•No little comment has been caused
by the fact that three republican
state conventions in succession have
adopted platforms without the slight
est allusion to the negro, no abuse
<>t the south, no reference to outrages
or fraudulent ballots. This is so
singular, so antagonistic to the pol
icy always formerly pursued bv the
republicans, such an abandonment
ot their chief issue in former cam
paigns, that it is not to be wondered
at that the ommission should have
attracted general attention, and the
question should be asked whether
the negro is only forgotten or pur
posely ovei looked, whether it is the
intention of the republicans to aban
don him altogether. The general
belief holds to this latter opinion,
mat the republicans are convinced
that there is no political capital in
the negro question."
Marvelous.
N.vsiivii.lk. Tf.n.w, Nov. S, 18S4.
One ot my customers. Mrs. L.
Williams, lias been using B. B. B. a
short time and reported to me that
its effects were simply marvelous,
and that it far surpasses all other
blood remedies she has used, and
that she could heartily sanction
anything said in its favor, us it had
given uie more relict than anything
fche bad ever used before.

A Dead Beat—Watch for Him.
Culhbert Liberal.
Some months ago a fellow named
Nander worked in the ice factory
here for a short time, and while
here, married a woman old enough
for his mother, in Quitman county.
He was a sort ot juggler, could per
form several • sligiit-of hand tricks,
etc. He is now playing biind, trav
eling from one point to another,
begging. His wife passes tor his
mother and tells doleful stories of
her misfortunes, having had seven
children, all born blind. lie has
recently been in Albany, we learn,
preying upon the people there.
The fed low was recognized on the
cannon-ball train last Sunday mor
ning goir.g toward Macon. lie was
beyond Marshalvillo. lie keeps liis
eyes closed, but his vision is not at
ail impaired. He is simply an im
poster. The old woman (his wife)
accompanies him and probably
leads him through the streets on his
begging tours. All such vagrants
should be arrested and dealt with.
A couple, suiting the above de
scription pretty well, was on our
streets a few days ago. When wo
consider the provision made by
statute, for the indigent poor in tiie
counties o ! Georgia, wo see no need
lor a resort to begging. The cir
cumstances of this class of people
are understood where they, them
selves. are known, and hence strange
beggars should not be encouraged
by contributions.
