TUESDAY MORNING OCT- 10.189*4
I HP. PRO 1*1,P. HAVE WANT*.
In his late letter to Georgia's
governor, President Cleveland can¬
didly told what he wants relative to
money. his wishes
To give emphasis to lie began
concerning this matter, by saying a
number of sentences
“I want."
Now as far as President Cleve¬
land’s wants, touching government
questions, harmonize with the de¬
mands of the country as expressed
and promulgated through the na
tional democratic platform, congress and
should give them due respect
proper consideration.
But while Mr. Cleveland has his
wants, tho people of this great coun¬
try have their wants, and as the sov
orign power is lodged with the peo¬
ple, their wants touching great na¬
tional questions should have their
weight and meet with duo considor
tion at the hands of congress.
On tho groat question of national
finance the people have forcibly grave wants, and
and they have so
so strongly expressed misapprehend those wants
that none can them.
Tho people of this country want
himetalism and have so declared ;
and any line of legislative policy
that does not accord with that decla¬
ration will not moot with their ap¬
proval. demands,
Tho people want the set
out it, the national democratic plat¬
form, carried out; they want the
plodges thereof redeemed; they
want purity in politics; they want a
national financial policy that works
to tho interest of all, and to the in¬
jury ot none; and they want such
oilier national reforms as the gener¬
al interest demand.
Tlioso are some of the wants of
tho common pooplo of whom there
are upwards of GO,000,000 in this
country.
KJtll.llOAD AtCIDKNTT.
The constantly rccurruing rail¬
road accidents of a serious nature
arc gottieg to bo alarming.
During tho last month there have
boon oiglit railroad acciendts in tho
Unitod States which resulted in tho
death of about one hundred persons.
Rightly considered this is a very’
serious matter, and one that de¬
mands thorough investigation. For
such constantly recurring accidents
by rail in which human life is sacri¬
ficed there must ho a cause.
And tho quostjou-Jhat concern
all X-To travcUjvy a
jwysop^ ,.„;j rail¬ m
what is flic cauro of so ninny
road accidents that are so fatal in
their results’?
As a rule, railroad imployos are
generally prudent men, sober, trust¬
worthy and roliablo ; but may it not
be true that the railroad authorities,
to lessen expenses, are imposing tho
vast amount of work to bo dono
by their train hands and employes
on a few men? May not tlioso re
pouted railroad accidents bo truca*
bio to tho fact that owing to the
present hard times the employes are
being entirely overworked and tho
railroads and their equipments arc
not being kept in such perfect con¬
dition as to prom iso the safety of
those who travel over them.
But what ever be tho causes that
lead to such destruction of human
life by railroad travel, the}’ should
be ascertained for the protection
and safety of the people.
Doubtless tho speed at which pas¬
senger cars are driven over rough
roads has much to do in bringing
about those railroad disasters And
if this be found to be true, then the
railroads should be made suitable
tor rapid travel or the speed should
be made to conform to the condition
ol the road.
