Question’. — I would like to know
more of this crop, which is said to be
such a tine resister of drouth. Is it. too
late to plant it uow, and what kind of
laud suits it beat? Is it a good feed for
stock, aud what is the best time to cut
lt; also the best variety to sow?
ANSWER. Kaffir corn is classed With
the non-saccharine sorghums, aud like
all plants of its class, it endures drouth
with much less injury than corn. When
corn has ouco beau stunted it never re
covers, but in the hot and regions of
the west, when the corn crop has been
destroyed by the drying winds, Kaffir
corn, although checked in its growth,
aud curled up for days, aud even weeks,
will, if the rains are not delayed too
late in the season, revive and produce a
crop of grain. The feeding value of t-iie
grain has not been fully tested. The
i experiments so far 'do not justify the
Statement that it is equal to corn as a
‘ stock food. The grain being small, and
| Jq p e swallowed bv the animals
, before , . belu . Properly , masticated,
- it
should always be ground. Otherwise
the uuckewed grains will swell after
being taken into the stomach and pro¬
duce unpleasant, and even dangerous
symptoms. To horses and cattle it is
fed dry. To hogs it is mixed with the
slops.
It is not too late to plant it, as it m:v- i
tnres about . four . mouths. It I
m is not
particular as to the quality of the laud j
on which it is planted, and while it re¬
sponds best to rich soils, it will yield a
crop oil land too poor for corn. It will
grow on clay or sandy land, bottoms or
uplands, and all things considered, is a
splendid supplementary crop, in case
the coni and other food crops are cut off.
The Blackhulled White variety (Af¬
rican millet) seems to combine all the
best qualities of the other varieties.
The grain being white, is like all the
white varieties, nonastringeut and bet¬
ter relished by stock. Besides this ad¬
vantage it has in part the earlier ma¬
turity aud superior yield of the red va
rieties and the seed does not shatter
j 1 and when bring ripe. Prepare fine the soil as for corn
to a tilth by harrowing.
During the first few’ w’eeks the plants
do not grow rapidly and care should be
taken that they do not become choked
by weeds or grass. Under favorable
conditions the plants attain a height
of from 4 to 6% feet, aud as the roots
lie veiy near the surface, cultivation
should be shallow and should altogether
cease when the heads begin to form.
As a hay crop it is not as desirable as
some of the sweet varieties of sorghum.
For grain the crop should be cut aud
shocked as soon as the grain is ripe.
If allowed to stand too long the grains
are apt to fall out aud waste. The fod¬
der remains green after the grain ma¬
tures aud is therefore in excellent con¬
dition to be cored. For hay, the crop
should be cut when the heads begin to
form, but to get the best feeding value
of the crop it should be allowed to ma¬
ture seeds—these are cured with the
stalks, and afterwards the heads are
cut off, threshed and ground, and the
fodder fed separately.—State Agricult¬
ural Department.
Spraying; Due* It Pay ?
Question’. —All things considered, do
-yon think that it pays in the ordinary
family garden and orchard to go to the
trouble and expense of spraying to de¬
stroy insect and fungus pests? Don’t
they return each year and does not the
farmer have to repeat the operations
each year ?
Answer. —Undoubtedly the alarming
increase of the countless varieties of in¬
sect aud fungus pests, wi.li which the
orchardist and gardener is troubled of
late years, is largely, indeed, almost en
tirely, due to the lack of such precau
tionary measures as spraying aud other
methods of preventing their ravages on
I our fruit trees ana vegetables. If we
had been careful in past years to watch
for aud industriously check the advance
of this army of depredators, we would
nr which f. , now ought f ee to the be in , decay their . of prime, orchards
nor
would we so often hear the complaint
of a failure of the fruit crop, It is true

FORSYTH.
We have a pleasant and handsome little
city of about 2,500 Inhabitants, 76 miles from
Atlanta and 27 miles from Macon, two first
class markets. Fruits and vegetables of
every description grow here.
CLIMATE.
The climate cannot be excelled. The nights
are cool and days warm during the summer.
In winter the thermometer never goes to
zero.
Our people are the best the state affords
and a kindly welcome Is extended to all who
come to make their homes with us.
HEALTH.
This city is situated in a rolling or mod¬
erately hilly country and Is extremely
healthy.
The water cannot he excelled and comes
from a sparkling cool spring. The city has
just built an extensive water works plant,
the capacity of which will more than supply
a city of double the size of Forsyth.
We need a good electric light plant and a
movement is now under way that will in all
probability give it to us.
We challenge the world for a more healthy
and sotuhrious climate or a better or more
congenial class of people.
Forsyth Is In the renter of the state and
surrounded by no sand plains or swamps.
